It will vbe understood t-hat in thesuse of such a holder, matches of short stemfmay be used and the-match may be conveniently held .in therhand without liability of :burn- .ing thefingers.

The match box a may conveniently take a circular form as illustrated and be made of two almost symmetrical parts such as p and 9 having peripheral flanges y' the peripheral flange of one fitting within the peripheral flange y' of the other part, and forming a circular and enclosed cavity be.- tween them. Or instead the respective parts p and 9 may be made quite symmetrical and adapted as illustrated on an enlarged scale in Figure 5 so that the edge of their re-- spective flanges may contact with a scarf joint and besecured together by soldering or other means.

The box isradvantageously provided with an integral tube 6 extending diametrically across from wall to wall and is secured to the peripheral wall by soldering or other means. At one end the bore of this tube 6 is advantageously screw threaded to corre- 1 spond with the screw threads upon the part (P, so that upon thematch holder being passed into the tube and the holder rotated, the screw thread on the holder engages the screw thread within the end of the bore and thus the holder is firmly secured in position. An opening'for example at is may be madein the peripheral wall of'the box so produced, which may be covered bya slide or closing plate Z in any suitableway. such as illustrated particularly in Figure 3. The slide Z may be secured by means of a pin Z to a sliding sprin plate Z adapted to contact with and slide beneath the peripheral wall of the box, and projecting parts and notches may be provided with a view positively to hold the slide Zin its closed or open positions. It will be understood that the pin Z slides within a slot- Z formed on the peripheral wall.

The match striking surface h may bemounted within a hole formed for its reception in the peripheral wall of the match box i side of the hole or aperture and the flanges h may be diverted outwardly at the ends for the purpose of holding the striking surface immovable. may be formed of a strip of hard steel having a roughened front face.

For the purpose of filling thebox with matches and for withdrawing matches as they are required, the opening is is sufficiently long to permit of the matches, having short stems, to be allowed to fall out. It will be understood that both the inner and the outer peripheral walls are cut away to thesame extent;

The inner part 39 (Figure 5) of the box or receptacle may be provided to rotate within the duter part 9 and for this purpose the holder previously passed into position in the box may serve as a stop to set the closed and open positions which may be conveniently done by providing a slot (or slots The striking surface h in opposite positions) in the'outer peripheral wall Within which the end of the holder may pass, as the inner part of the box is moved or rotated to open or close it.

Instead of providing the match box or receptacle of a circular shape in the manner described, it may be provided for example of a more or less oval or of any other shape, and a cylindrical hole or a hole of any other convenient shape, may be provided near one edge thereof for the reception of the match holder in substantially the same manner as hereinbefore described.

For the purpose of filling the match box or withdrawing the matches therefrom a spring cap may be applied at one or other end, instead of the sliding door described or any other form of closure may be provided.

Thus it will be understood that the invention is not limited to any particular form of the match box or receptacle.

Match boxes provided as hereinbefore described may be supplied with matches from receptacles 0' of a similar form as illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 advantageously made from cardboard or any other material, but

with flat side walls and a circular peripheral wall, ahole such as 1 being provided in the peripheral wall which may be'covered over with a strip a of tape or other material and caused to adhere and on the strip being may be allowed to fall into the match box.

I claim: 1. A match box,

3. A match box comprising an integral tube passing therethrough, and in combination therewith a match holder adapted to pass into position within the said tube, said match holder being provided with screw threads in determined position, and the said match box being provided with corresponding screw threads in determined position at the opening of the said tube, by which the said holder may be secured in position on the match box, substantially as described.

4:. A match box of a substantially circular form comprising an integral tube passing diametrically through the said match box, and in combination a match holder adapted to pass through the said tube, and means respectively upon the said match holder and upon the said match box by which the holder may be secured in position on the match box, substantially as described.

5. A match box of a substantially circular form comprising an integral tube passing diametrically through the said match box and a slide mounted at the periphery of the said match box adapted to uncover a hole in the said periphery through which the matches may pass, in combination with a match holder adapted to pass through the.

6. A match box, means upon said match box for the reception of a match holder in position transversely through the box, and in combination a match holder, means respectively upon the match holder and the match box by which the match holder may be secured in its position therein, and means upon the said match holder for the reception of the match and for its expulsiorrtherefrom after ignition.
