UNITED STATES EDWARD BRUNHO FFyOF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
DISPLAY AND VENDING APPARATUS.
Application filed November 18, 1922. SerialNo. 601,855.
To e ZZ whom it may concern Be itknowi that I, EDWARD BRUNHorr, a citizen of the United States, res ding at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilplay thecontents of the original package and preferably with a transparent lid through which the goods are displayed, while at the same time protecting the goods from dust or injury. Another object is to provide animprovedand simple supporting structure to support original packages in position to best display their "contents to prospective purchasers. Another object is to provide an improved supporting structufreltosupport original. packages in position and manner to attract the attention of prospective customers to the original packages and their-contents, Another object is to provide an improved supporting structure having a lid with a transparent sectiontodisplay the .contents of the original container as well as the exterior thereofand at the same time to protect the contents of theoriginal package from dust or injury, or the escape of moisture therefrom. My invention also comprises certain details of form and combination and arrangement of component elements, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings in which:
'Fig. 1, is a plan of a blank from which the body of my improved supporting structure is produced by bending or folding operations.
Fig. 2, is an inside perspective view of the lid member detached.
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the supporting structure and lid assembled for use but before mounting an original package thereon.
Figs, is a perspective View of the supporting structure and lid assembled for use and applied to support an original package.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention in which a sheet metal supporting structure 16 is formed by stamping and folding preferably from a single flat sheet of metal, substantially as shown in Figs. 1, and 3. The supporting structure 16 comprises an inclined base or bottom 17 the forward edge 18 of which is designedto rest directly upon a counter or show-case while its rear edge 19 is supported'in a more elevated position upon and above the counter or show-case by means of legs 20 and 21 preferably formed integral with and from the base 17 by stampingv therefrom. The lower ends of the legs 20and21 are preferably bent at substantially right angles to the legs 20 and 21 to constitute feet 22 of relatively more extended surface where the legs 20 and 21 come ,in,;.contact with thecounter or showcase. Thelegs 20 and 21 are preferably retained in the same plane'as thebase 17 until thevending apparatus reaches its destination and is about'to be put into practical use when the legs 20 and 21 are bent outwardly or downwardly from the base 17 substantially as shown in Fig. 3, to support the base 17 at the desired degreeof inclination, The legs 20 and 21 may be variouslybent or rebent away from the base 17 to vary the degree of inclination of the base 17 as; may be desired.
At the forward edge of. the bas 17 is a relatively narrow upwardlyextending front plate 24,. the upper edge 25.. of which .is made-smooth or finished by lapping or folding the metal upon; itself.v 7
he back 26 of the supporting structure is bent at substantially right angles to the base 17 and is preferably of slightly greater width than the height of the original package which it is designed to support. The distance between the front plate 24 and the rear plate 26 is designed to be slightly greater than the width of the original pack age with which the vending apparatus is to be employed, so that when one of said original packages is mounted upon the base 1'? the front plate 24 will support the original package in place at its front lower edge while the rear plate 26 will support the original package in place at therear of the base, and the upper edge of the rear plate 26 will come even with or slightly above the upper face of the original package.
The upper edge of the rear plate 26 is provided with tubular projections or journals 28 to receive a hinge axle 29 by means of which the frame 31 of a lid 30 is hinged to the upper edge of the rear plate 26.
The lid 30 comprises a rectangular sheet metal frame 31 having on the front and side edges thereof a channel 32 to receive the front and side edges of a plate of glass or other transparent material 34 which is adapted to be introduced into the channels 32 while the lid is folded backwardly and to be retained in place by the rear plate 26 when the lid is in either of the positions shown in Figs. 3 and A. As will be apparent from the position of the original package in Fig. A the inner edges 35 of the channel 34: fit snugly upon the upper edges of the open mouth of the original package so as to exclude dust and dirt to prevent injury to the contents of the original package and to pract cally prevent loss of moisture from the contents of the original package to the atmosphere of the room.
Practically all of the front and both ends of the original package, with any advertising matter or trade-mark illustrated thereon are displayed to the prospective. customer. Also the goods in the interior cf the original package are displayed to the prospective customer through the transparent section of the lid and the goods are readily accessible if desired by lifting the lid. It is also designed that the front plate 24 and also the transparent section 34 of the lid shall carry advertising matter calculated to direct attention to the merits of the goods and assist in the sale thereof.
The apparatus shown and described is capable of considerable modification within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. A display and vending apparatus comprising a sheet metal supporting structure having front bottom, and rear sections bent at substantially right angles to one another and open at its ends, legs formed. as; cutout portions of said structure-to support said structure in an inclined position, and a-transparent lid hinged to the upper edge of the rear section and adapted to rest upon the open mouth of an original package resting upon the bottom section of said structure.
2. A display and vending apparatus comprising a sheet metal supporting structure having a narrow front section and relatively wider bottom and rear sections bent at substantially right angles to one another, and open to display the upper portion of the front and the ends of an original package supported thereon, legs formed integral with and extending downwardly from the rear of said structure to hold said structure in an inclined position, and a transparent lid hinged to the upper edge of the rear section of said supporting structure and adapted to rest upon and close the open mouth of an original package-,resting upon the bottom section of said supporting structure.
EDWARD BRUNHOFF.
