IMPROVEMENT IN BED-PLATES FOR PAPER-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,147, dated April 28, 1874; application filed March 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER B. FOWLER, of Lawrence, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Plates for Paper- Engine; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specitieation and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a top view; Fig. 2, a side eleva-tion; and Fig. 3 a transverse section of one of inysaid engine or rag-cutters.
l t consists of the combination of a metallic bed-bar, u', with two brace-bars, b l), and a series of intermediate steel cutters or pla-tes, c c c, fixed inte sueh bed-bar by casting it upon them in a mold, so as to weld the bed-bar both to the said plates and the brace-bars, while extending into it in manner as represented. Tlie common way of supporting the series of knives ot a pulp or paper-engine is by bolts going through them, and plates of wood interposed between them in order to keep them at the requisite distances asunder.
The plates after having become worn down to the bolt-holes are rendered unfit for further use in the paperen gine but with my improvement the plates can be worn down to the base, and consequently will last very much longer than when supported by bolts, as described. The cutter-plates and the-brace-plates are to be arranged in a mold for the formation ot' the base, which is to be cast upon those portions of the plates that may extend into the base matrix of the mold.
l claim- As a new manufacture, for use in a paper or pulp engine, the improved cutter or combination ot' the inetallie bed a with the brace-bars b b, and the series of intermediate steel pla-tes
