To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lead, in the county of Lawrence and State 'of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Valve, of which the following is a specification.
.The present. invention relates to an electrically operated valve being constructed especially for use in conjunction with the drain pipe of a radiator or water jacket of an internal combustion engine used upon an automobile so asto prevent, ordo away with the necessity of lifting thev hood and 1 getting into an inconvenient-position for op eration of the valve now commonly em ployed for. that purpose. Of course, the
valve has other usages to which it may be put without departing from the spirit of this invention.
The rincipal object of the invention is to provlde a device of this character operable b .a solenoid, and means being provided or holdin the valve either in an open or a closed position after the same ha been 7 actuated by the solenoid.
lVith the above and numerous other objectsin view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides 3 in such novel features of construction, com-' bination and arrangement of parts as' will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that a. valve casing 1 is attached or formed integral with a box like structure 2..
A valve seat 3 is arranged on the upper end of the valve casing 1 for receiving puppet valve 4 which is provided with a depending stem 5 projecting through the guides 6. A pin 7 extends transversely through the bottom end of the valve stem 5, and a compressible coil spring 8 is disposed above the stem 5 between the pin 7 and the. lower guide. 6 so as to normally hold this valve in a closed position upon its seat 3. A bell crank lever 9 is pivoted at 10 one arm there- A of being wholly situated within the box like structure 2 while the other arm thereof projects through a slot 11 and engages the Y the contact 2 core 14 which is normally held out of the solenoid 13 by a compressible coil spring 15. A pair of arms 16 and 17 are attached to the outer extremity of the armature core 14.
The arm 17 ha a slotted extension 18 which is engaged by the pin 18 carried by the end of the bell crank-lever 9. This arm 17 is provided witha notch 20 on its'funder edge which is engageable by a spring pressed catch 21 mounted on a spring 22 which in turn is carried by the electro-magnet 23. The other rod 16 is grounded as at 24 and is provided with an insulating strip 25 intermediate its end on its upper edge which is engageable by the spring contacts 26' and 27 which at all times are in engagement with the upper edge of this arm 16..
At- 28 and 29 I have shown. diagrammatically ordinary -push,buttons for operation of the valve. When the push button 29 is depressed, it will be seen that the cur rent flows from the battery 30 through the wire 31 through wire 32, through push button switch 29, through wire 33, through the solenoid13, through wire 34, through spring contact 27, through arm 16'which is grounded as at 24. The circuit thus closed causes energization of the solenoid 13 pulling in-- wardly the armature core 14and compressing the spring 15. As this armature core 14 is pulled inwardly it swings the bell crank lever 9 through the intermediacy of the arm 17 causing the opening of the valve 4 as previously indicated. A the solenoid causes the armature 14 to move, the notch 20 will be engaged by the catch 21 so that when the finger is lifted oil of the push button 29, the valve will be held in an open position as is evident. It will also be noted that as the catch 21 enga es the notch 20 simultaneously comes into contact with the insulating strip 25, whereby the circuit is broken no matter how long thefinger is pressed upon the push button 29.

the push button 28 is actuated whereby the current will flow from the battery 30 to the Wire 31, through the wire 36,-through the push button 28 through wire 37 through the electromagnet 23, through wire 38, through the spring contact 26, through the arm 16 which is grounded. This circuit causes the energization of the electromagnet 23 whereby the catch 21 is attracted thereby causing its disengagement from the notch 20 and allowing the valve to be closed being actuated by the compressed springs 8 and 15 as will be evident from an inspection of the drawings. It is also to be noted that as the armature core 14 is projected out of the armature 13 by the spring 15, the spring contact 26 will be brought into engagement with the insulating strip 25, causing the breaking of this second circuit no matter how long the finger is held upon the push button 28. p
, It is thought that the construction and operation of my invention will therefore be solenoid including a core movable therein,
a spring for normally holding the core in an extended position; a rod extended from the core and connected with thelever so that upon energization of the solenoid the core will be moved inwardly and the rod 3C? tuated to swing the lever for opening the valve, a spring pressed catch, said rod provided with a notch adapted to be engaged by the catch when the valve is in an Open position, an electro-magnet associated with the catch which when energized will attract the catch so as to disengage from the notch of the rod, a primary circuit including a switch, a source of electrical energy, the solenoid, a spring contact, a contact rod attached to the core of the solenoid and provided with an insulating strip, said contact rod and said source of electrical energy being grounded, said spring contact being only engaged with the insulated portion of the contact rod when the core of the solenoid is in a retracted position and the valve opened, an auxiliary 60 that theelectromagnet is always de-energized at this time. i
