PATENT QFFICE.
DAVID BARB AND ELIJAH NEFF, OF ROCHESTER, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-EQUALIZERS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,124. dated .April 528, 1874; application filed March 16, 1874.
The nature of our invention relates to an improvement in equalizing attachment for springs; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of devices, which will be more fully explained hereafter, whereby the weight of the load is evenly distributed over the springs.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention. 7
a represents two elliptical springs, placed upon and at right angles to either the axle or the reach, and secured thereto in a suitable manner. Extending across from the top of one spring to the other is a curved plate, I), which extends up high enough to allow the bottom. of the bed of the wagon or buggy to rest upon its top, and which binds the two springs together, so that when one is compressed the otherwill be also. Secured to the under side of each spring, by the same bolts that bind the cross-plate b, is a short plate, 0, havinga lug or car formed upon its under side, to which is pivoted a vertical rod or lever, d. Pivoted upon short screw-bolts 6, formed upon .the ends of the clip-plates, are two rocking levers, i, which have their outer ends pivoted to the lower ends of the vertical rods (I, while their inner-ends are attached together by'a'slot and stud.
Any weight distributed unevenly on either side of the body will depress the spring on that side, and this depression, forcing down the vertical rod. 41 on the same side, forces upward the inner ends of the two rocking levers, and this draws down thevertieal rod on the other side, so as to compress the other spring to an equal degree. 1
e are aware that various devices have been used to equalizethe action of the springs; but in no instance have they ever been connected together by devices like those here shown.
Having thus described our, invention, we claim 1. The combination of the springs a, rods (7, and rocking levers i, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the springs a, crossplate b, plates c, levers i, rods cl, and bolts 6,
substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing,
we have hereunto set our'hands this 10th day of March, 1874.
