Description

Jul 15 1924.
E. F. 'BRAUCHER ADVERTISING DISK FOR AUTOMOBILE WHEELS Filed Feb. 9, 1924 Patented July 15, 1924.
UNEIEE STATES EDWARD FRANKLIN BRAUCHER, OF DENVER, COLOR-ADO.
ADVERTISING DISK FOR AUTOMOBILE WHEELS.
Application filed February 9, 1924. Serial No. 691,648.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD FRANKLIN BRAUOHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Disks for Automobile lVheels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to advertising devices and has special reference to improvements in advertising disks of the type disclosed and claimed by'me in Patent No. 1,432,274, granted to me on October 17, 1922.
It is the object of this invention to produce a disk that can be readily applied to an automobile wheel and which will be provided with its own bearing member that can be screwed onto the wheel in the place of the ordinary cap.
It is a further object to produce an advertising disk that shall rotate on ball and roller bearings, and which shall have a neat and ornamental appearance.
My invention can be best described and will be most readily understood when reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which the preferred embodiment thereof is shown, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing my improved'disk in place on the front wheel of an automobile;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2, Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a view of the inner surface of the disk taken on line 3-3, Fig. 2.
Numeral 1 represents the pneumatic tire of an automobile wheel and 2 represents the outer end of the hub, \which is threaded as indicated at 3, while 4 indicates the spokes of the wheel. In place of the ordinary hub cap, I provide a special cap which is indicated as 'a whole by the numeral 5. This cap has an interiorly threaded portion that cooperates with the threaded portion 3 of the hub. The cap has such length that when it is screwed onto the hub, its end engages or almost engages the hub plate 6. The outer end of the cap has a non-circular portion 7 that can be engaged by a wrench for applying the cap to the wheel or for removing it therefrom. The extreme outer end 8 of the cap 5 isv of greatly reduced diameter and is threaded for the reception of a nut 9, by means of which the inner ball raceway 10 is clamped against the shoulder 11. The outer surface of the cap 5 is cylindrical and is preferably machined so as to be concentric with the threaded opening. My advertising device comprises a disk 12 whose outer edge is rolled about a wire in the manner indicated at 13. This disk has a central opening of sufficient size to receive the inner end of cap 5. Secured to the outside of the disk 12 and concentric with the opening therein is a conical housing 14 which is provided at its larger end with a flange 15, which is fastened to the disk by means of rivets l6. Near the outer end of the housing is a transverse wall 17 which has a central opening for the reception of the ball raceway 18. Mounted for rotation between lugs 19 and the outside of the disk are three rollers 20 which are so spaced that they will admit the cap 5 between them. jects beyond the wall 17 as indicated at 21, and is externally threaded for the reception of a cap 22, which closesthe outer end of the casing and conceals the nut 9 which may be held from removal by means of a split pin in the usual way. To the inside of the disk, I secure a heavy piece of metal 23 that serves to keep the disk from rotating. A brace 24 may connect the casing 14 and the lower'side of the disk when this is found to be desirable.
In order to enable the air hose to be connected to the air valve from the outside of the wheel in the usual way, I provide the The end of the casing prodisk with an opening 25 provided with a cover 26.
Since my disk is provided with rollers 20 that roll on the outside of the hub cap and since it has a ball bearing composed of raceways 10- and 18, one (10) of which is clamped to the cap and the other (18) of which is secured in an opening in wall 17 it is apparent that the disk and cap can rotate freely on each other. As the wheel rotates, the weight 23 will keep the disk from rotating with the result that it will have no rotary, but only a motion of lineal translation with respect to the ground, so that any sign that is painted on the disk can be read while the machine to which it .is secured is traveling. A felt washer 2'7 may be placed betweenthe disk and the hub plate 6 when it is found desirable to do so. This washer prevents dust and dirt from entering within casing 14. It is my intention to place grease within the casing so that the rollers and the ball bearing will be properly lubricated.
My disk in addition to serving as an advertising medium, serves to beautify the car by presenting a smooth varnished surface to the View of the observer and it hides the otherwise dirty wheel. My disk also shades the wheel and thereby prevents the shrinkage of the wooden spokes and felloe that otherwise occurs. It permits the tire to be readily removed and chains to be put into placethereon. when driving in the mud, the disk protects the wheel and is easily kept clean, even in muddy, rainy weather, as the mud drips oil the smooth surface or can be quickly removed by means of a hose.
On Sundays or other times when the car is to be used for pleasure only, the disks can be removed. Owing to the double spaced hearings, the disk will not wabble but will hang straight and smooth.
Having now described my what I claim as new is:
1. An advertising disk adapted to be applied to a revolving wheel having an outwardly projecting hub portion, a cap adapted to be scured to the outside of the hub, said cap having at its outer end a portion of reduced diameter, said portion being threaded for the reception of a nut, a ball bearing secured to said portion of reduced diameter,
invention,
a disk, a conical housing secured thereto, a plurality of rollers connected to the disk and the housing, said housing having a transverse wall near its outer end, said wall having an opening for the reception of the ball-bearing and a threaded cap to close the outer end of the housing.
2. An advertising disk adapted to be ap plied to an automobile wheel, said disk being circular and provided with a central opening, a conical housing secured to the disk, said housing having a transverse wall near its outer end, an opening in said wall for the reception of a ball-bearing, a plurality of rollers secured to said housing and disk, and a threaded cover secured to the outer end of the housing.
3. An advertising device adapted to be secured to the hub of an automobile wheel comprising, in combination, a cylindrical cap adapted to he threaded onto the hub, the outer surface of said cap being concentricv with the threaded surface thereof, said cap having an axially extending portion of reduced diameter, said portion being threaded for the reception or" a nut, a ball race on said reduced portion, a disk having a conical housing secured thereto, a ball race carried by the housing and adapted to cooperate with the ball race on the reduced portion, and spaced rollers connected to said housing and t said disk, said rollers being adapted to rotate and to cooperate with the outer surface of the cap.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
EDWARD FRANKLIN BRAUCHER.
