OUTLET VALVE.,Y
Application med Nvember 30,1920. serial Nar/127,316.
To all when?J itimay concern:A
lBe it known that we, PHILIP W. BOLTON and WILLIAM N. MINNIEAR, citizens of the` United States, residing at Coffey'ville, in thercounty ofv Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outlet Valves; and
we' do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to markey Y` car kthat a leak-proof connection is established and also will permit removal of the.
valve when desiring to repair or examine the same.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means for securing the nozzle to the tank ofthe car and which will not i provisiongof an outlet valve for tank cars of the above stated character, which will be simple, durable, and etlicient, and which may be `manufactured and sold at a com-A paratively low cost.
With these and other Objects inview as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in 'certain novel featuresof construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will he hereinafter more fully described and claimed. v 1
For acomplete understanding of our invention, reference is to be -had to the `following description and accompanying draw, ings; in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view, illustrating a tank car' with an outlet valve applied thereto and constructed in accordance with our invention, L
Figure 2 is an enlarged-1 sectional view, illustrating the valve and nozzle,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the valve casing,
`Figure 4 isa sectional view illust-rating a feed plug for the valve,
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view illus-- trating the pawl and ratchet mechanism for the valve shaft,
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the valve crossing,
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view, illustrating the valve. f Y
Referringin` detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a fragmentary portion of a tank car especially designed to carry fluid and is provided in its top wall with the-usual dome 2 closed by a removable cap Y 3. The bottom wall ofthe tank 1 is provided with abeveled opening'll to receive a valve casing 9. A'reinforcing plate 6 is secured to the outer face of the bottom wall CTI by means of rivets 7 and is provided with a screw threaded opening 8 -to' receive a reduced screw threaded neck 10 formed Von the; lower end of the valve casing 9. The nozzle 10 terminatesl flush with the outer faceof-the reinforcing platey and said valve casing 9f'is provided' with outlet 'openings 13 onropposite sides thereof and the lower lwalls of said openings are ydisposed flush with the bottom wall of the tank 1 so that they contents of the tank may readily drain into the valve casing. The upper end ofthe valve casing 9. is provided with eX- ternalscrew threads 11 for connection with an attaching cap V12. The attachingv cap 'i2' is Aadapted to secure lwithin the upper endof thevalve 4casing 9 a valve'feed plug 12 which is provided with a flange 13 that rests Yupon the upper edge of the valve casing 9 and is engaged by the cap 12.Y The feed plugV 12 is provided with a bore, ithe wall of which has feed threads 14 formed thereon for cooperationl with feed threads 1-5 formed on thevalve stem 16.V A diskshaped head 17 is formed on the lower end of the valve stem 16 and received within an annular internal screw threaded portionV 18 of a Vvalve head 19. A locking member 20 is threaded in the annular*A portion 18 and is adapted to retain the disk-shaped head 17A thereinj The securing member 20 is provided V*with an opening, which permits the valve stem 16 to vpass freely therethro-ugh and Lsaid lsecuring member is spaced slightly from the disk-shaped head 17 so that a slight pivotal movement may be had between the valve head 19 andthe ste-m 16. The valve head 19 isy adapted to engagea valve seat 21 formed in the lower end of the valve casingr 9 yfor the purpose-oft' preventing the eontent's of 'the tank 'from4 .flowing outwardly through the neck 10.
The upper end of the stem 16 is pro" vided Vwith squared socket te receive the squared lower end of a valve rod 19 and the latter is secured to the' stern by means of a pin 22. The valve redk 19 is y'disposed 11 vertically and extends upwardly inthe dome 2 and is journaled in' a pair of( spaeed plates 21 carried by a bracket 22 and the latter is secured to the dome 2. A ratchet ygear 23 is secured to the valve rod'. 19 be-v tween the plate 21 adapted `to be engaged by a double end dog 2li which. is pivoted between the plates 21 as illustrated 'at 23.
`The double end dog 24 is' provided with oppositelydisposed handles 24 whichfproject `'beyond the plates 21st) `that fthe ends of said dogsmay be movedinto 'and out of engagement with thel ratchet wheel 23.
The vplates 21 arepr'ovided with pairs oi- -f openings `on either side of the pivet of the IGO dogc24` to receive the' vbolt 25. 25 is secured' to the upper end f the valve rod 19 So that said rod may' be readily rotated for the purpose of raising and low ering the valve within the valve easing to open and close the passage therethrough. A kstop 26 is secured toithe ifal'vrod'; 19 adjacent its upper end .for ythepurpesefol liinitiiig the upward movement of the valve rod" and consequently prevent'iiigjainleing of the valve against Athe feed plug' 12. The stop 26 is detachable fromvthfe 'valve red 19 so that when rit is desired lto remove.'tli'e valve from the valve easing, the may be accomplished by, the removal of' the' stop.
An auxiliary 'plate 27 is secured tov the exterior ofthe tank 1 overl'ies ,the plate @and has an Opening 2e iii aiiiierrieiit 'vg/ini tli'e opening 8. kTulle auiilia'rylplat'e 27 secured to the tank; Y'in any desired man ner v and has' secured thereto a' dis'large mzzl@ e9 iii aliiieiiieiit with uieiqpeiiiiig es Se niet :i'vheii the 'valve-is iii an 'epi-in pcli-` sitionand the contentsl of the 1 tank flows through thefneck'lO of the valve casing, the same will be directed thre'ughwtheA nozzle 29. ABy having the nozzle 29secured tothe plate 27 and the latter k"se'nculed to; the tank, providesa construction which will not inj'lire 'or loosen thevalveca'siiig frein A time when.
