To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that EUGEN zen of Switzerland, residing in Winterthur, Sw tzerland, has invented the followin del; scribed Improvements in Cylinder and cad Construction, for which he has filed ap lications for patent in Switzerland on ebruary 20, 1923, and in Germany on February 21, 1923, respectively, Nos. 22,015 and The invention relates to cylinder and head construction. Its object is to simplify the construction and insure sufiicien-t cooling adaoent the combustion space of the cylinder,
with a'minimum metal stress due to difference in thermal conditions. To accomplish the object stated I provide the liner flange with a liberal longitudinal dimension and form therein an annular cooling chamber or annular series of cooling chambers which is orare in communication with the cylinder water jacket and with the cooling space in the cylinder head,orso arranged as to permit flow of cooling fluid inside the flange.
2 The flange is adapted to seat on the upper end of the jacket wall and project above it and is clamped in position by thec linder head, the bolts passin outside of it. Its massive cross-section a apts it to withstand the clamping strain and form close joints with its head and jacket wall and'makes posible the thinning ofthe inner chamber wall, the line of strain being through the relatively thick outer wall of the flange.
Referring to the drawings: the sole figure is a longitudinal section through so much of the cylinder and cylinder head as is necessary to illustrate the invention.
The cylinder therein shown is made up 40 of the cylinder jacket 1, the liner 2, and the cylinder head 3, the wall 1 terminating in an enlargement 1 against which seats the flange 5 of the liner, this flange also furnishing the seat for the cylinder head 3 with 46 provision, if desired, for the usual intermediate gasket or gaskets. Spaces 6, 7 and 8 through which cooling fluid is circulated,
, are provided respectively in the cylinder jacket, in the cylinder head, and in the 50 flange 5, which is hollow or chambered for that purpose so as to present annular cooling space which has alsosubstantial extension lengthwise of the cylinder whose hottest part it surrounds, thus providing for a ZBINDEN, citisufliciently rapid and a well equalized cooling of the liner flange. The effectiveness of the chamber 8 for cooling is increased by makin its inner wall 9 thinner than the wall 0 the liner beyond it. Space 8 is prefera'bly placed in communication with space 6 by any desired number of passages 10 and with space 7 by the run-around 11 or other-' wise. In order that the annular cooling chamber 8 may be readily cleaned one or more hand holes 12 having covers 13 are provided in its periphery where, owing to the fact that the flange 5 extends beyond the top of the jacket wall, they are immediately accessible. The cylinder head 3 is secured to the cylinder proper by an annular series of studs 14 which surround the flange 5, being preferably spaced from it. They are receivedby an external studre- 'ceiving flange or equivalent portion at the end of the cylinder head remote from the cylinder and are accessible to the atmosphere, thereby promotin cooling and avoiding unequal and destructive heat strains.
Claims:
1. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder water-jacket, a water-jacketed cylinder head having a stud-receiving flange at the end remote from the cylinder and outside the cooling space of the head, a cylinder liner having anenlarged immediately accessible external flange on the top of which the cylinder head seats and'which 2. seats on the top of the outer wall of the cylinder water-jacket, said flange being provided with an annular cooling chamber sun rounding the hottest part of the cylinder and in communication with the cylinder water-jacket, a run-around constituting an external connection between the cooling space in the liner flange and the cooling space in the head, and external studs received by the stud-receiving portion of the cylinder head, located outside the liner flange and accessible to the atmosphere and clamping the cylinder head, cylinder liner and outer jacket wall together.
3. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder water-jacket, a water-jacketed cylinder head having an external studreceiving portion at the end remote from the cylinder, a cylinder liner having an enlarged immediately accessible external flange extending beyond the end of the cylinder water-jacket and on the top of which the cylinder head seats and which seats on the top of the outer wall of the cylinder wateracket, said flange being provided with an annular cooling chamber surrounding the hottest part of the cylinder and in communication with the cylinder waterjacket, the inner wall of the chamber being of less thickness than that of the liner wall beyond it, said flange having top and bottom radially bracing cross wall adjacent the thinned part of the liner wall, thereby permitting said local thinning of the liner wall to a point less than that'necessary in the rest of the liner, and external studs received by the stud-receiving portion of the cylinder head, located outside the liner flange and having parts opposite the cylinder head and parts opposite the liner flange accessible to the atmosphere and clamping the cylinder head, cylinder liner and outer jacket wall together.
