II 0 at whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS OARDWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Sedalia, county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lubricators for lubricating the bearing parts of machinery and it relates more particularly to improvements in force-feed lubricators of the kind used on locomotives.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for locking the force-feed plug of the lubricator against rotation Another object is to provide an operating handle for the force-feed plug that can be shifted to clear obstructions. Other objects are simplicity and cheapness of construction, certainty of operation and compactness of design. The invention consists in the parts and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,

Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section through said lubricator, the operating handle being shown in locked position in full lines and in raised position in dotted lines.
The lubricator shown in the accompanying drawing comprises an internally threaded grease cup or receptacle 4 adapted to contain a lubricant and having an externally threaded lower portion 5 adapted to be threaded into a threaded bore in the bearing part of the machine that is to be lubri cated. The upper portion of the cup a is provided with flat angular faces 6 to receive a wrench or other tool.
The cup is provided at its bottom with an opening 7 for the discharge of lubricant. The lubricant is forced out through the discharge opening 7 by means of a forcefeeder comprising an externally threaded plug 8, which is threaded into the internally threaded opening in the cup and constitutes the closure therefor. The plug is provided at its top with oppositely disposed? upstanding ears or lugs 9, which are bored 1922. Serial No. 549,017.

The outer end of the lever 11 has a bore extending there'- through, at right angles to the pivotpin 10, in which is slidably mounted an operating handle in the form of a baror rod 12 whose ends are provided with knobs 13 Ighat serve to retain said handle within said ore.
The top of the forcing plug 8 is formed with an axial bore or recess 14 in which is seated a coiled compression spring '15. The upper end of this spring abuts against a cylindrical plunger 16, which is slidably mounted in the upper end of the axial bore 14 in the forcing plug. The pivoted .end of the lever 11 has flat sides and a fiat end whereby the upper end of the spring pressed plunger 16 is adapted to abut flatwise against the sides or end of said lever in the respective raised or lowered positions thereof, thereby yieldably holding the lever in either of said positions. The grease cup is preferably provided with a peripheral flange or rim 17 that has a series of circumferentially spaced notches 18 in its outer face adapted to embrace the sliding handle when the supporting lever therefor is swung down in either direction.
The device is especially adapted for'use on the connecting and parallel rods of locomotives Where there has been considerable difiiculty in keeping the threaded forcing plugs in the desired adjusted position, and where also the clearance between the lubri cator and the parts adjacent thereto is too small to permit a complete rotation of the operating lever. In practice, the operating handle is swung up into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and is used to r0- tate the forcing plug to force out the lubri-i cant. During this operation the operating handle may be slid in or out to clear obstructions. The lever is thenaswung down, during which movement the operating handle slides downwardly through the bore in the lever and enters one of the notches in the peripheral flange of the cup, thereby locking the forcing plug against rotation.
Obviously, the invention admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details shown and described.
IVhat I claim is:
1. A lubricator comprisinga cup having a series of circumferentially v spaced notches in its exterior surface and an opening for the discharge of lubricant, a feed plug in the upper end of said, cup, a lever having one end pivoted on the upper end of said feed plug, an operating handle slidably suppor ed in the free end of said lever and adapted in the lowered position thereof to engage a notch in saidv cup, and a spring-supported plunger mounted in saidplug below the pivo't ed end of said lever, said end of said lever having fiat sides and a flat end, said plunger having a flat upper end adapted to abut flatwise against the flat surfaces of said lever in the upright and. lowered positions thereof to yieldably hold the same in said positions.
2. A lubricator comprising a cup having a series of circumferentially spaced notches in its exterior surface and an opening for the discharge of lubricant, a feed plug in said cup, a lever pivoted on the upper end of said plug on an axis disposed diametrically relative thereto, whereby said lever is adapted to be swung to either side of said lubricatoiy and an operating rod located at the outer end of said lever and arranged at right angles to the pivot therefor, said rod beingshiftable axially on said lever to engage a notch in said cup when said lever is swung to either side thereof and to clear obstructions when said lever is in an upright position.
3. A lubricator comprising a cup having a series of eircumferentially spaced notches in its exterior surface and an opening for the discharge of lubricant, a feed plug in said cup, a lever pivoted on the upper end of said plug on an axis disposed diametrically relative thereto, whereby said lever is adapted to be swung to either side of said lubricator, an operating rod located at the outer end of said lever and arranged at right angles to the pivot therefor, said rod being shiftable axially on said lever to engage a notch in said cup when said lever is swung to either side thereof and to clear obstructions when said lever is in an upright position, and a springsupported plunger mounted in said plug below the pivoted end of said lever, said plunger being adapted to bear against the pivoted end portion of said lever when the same is swung to either side of said lubricator and when said lever is in an upright position. thereby yieldably holding said lever in said 2- "ion.
