J. c. scHELTER LAST Findlay 26 1923 INVENTOR. cfiz 6.' 5611 i? vBy 'is A Patented `lnly 8, 1924.
JOHN C. SCHELTER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
misil.4
Application filed May, 1923. Serial No. 641,745.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN C. SCHELTER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to lasts and more particularly to the type which has a toe part and a heel part movably connected and held in expanded condition by a locking member or detent which is manually displaceable from locking position to permit the last to be collapsed. An object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means for holding the locking member or detent out of locking position until the last parts are moved relatively to collapse the last.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing the last in expanded and locked condition;
Fig. 2 is a sectional View showing the last expanded with the lock or detent moved to unlocking position;
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the manner in which the last on its collapse'effects the release of the detent or lock; and
Fig. 4 shows the last in collapsed condition.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the fore part and 2 the heel part. These last parts are connected together by a bonding means which is preferably in the form of a plate 3 secured against movement in a kerf 4 in the heel part by two pins 5 and having a part extending forwardly into a kerf 6 on the fore part, said forwardly extending part being pivoted in thekerf on a pivot pin 7 This bonding means also has a forwardly extending portion 8forming an abutment 9 with which a locking member or detent 10 on the fore part 1 cooperates, this locking member or detent 10 being, in this instance, pivoted at 11 in the kerf 6 above thepivot pin 7. A nose or projection 12 on the detent projects under the forwardly projecting portion of the bonding member 3 and limits the o utward movement of the detent or locking device. This projecting portion 12 forms lone of the features of th'is'invention.
. Another feature of this invention is the means by which the detent or locking device 10 is held both in a locked or unlocked position. This means, in this instance, embodies a plunger 13 surrounded by a helical spring 14`arranged in a bore or pocket 15 formed in the fore part in advance of the bonding means and operating at an angle other than` a right angle to the horizontal plane of the last. The head 16 of this plunger cooperates with the detent 10 and, in order that the spring which operates'onl the plunger may be utilized for holding the detent both in locked and unlocked positions, the detent has a projecting portion 17 forming two faces 18 and 19 on opposite sides thereof. The projecting portions and these faces are so located that, when the head 16 of the plunger cooperates with the face 19, the detent will have a tendency to move toward locking position, as shown in Figs. l and 4, and when the headed portion cooperates with the face 18, the detent will be held away from locking position, as shown in Fig. 2. In order that the detent 10 may be shifted automatically with reference to the head 16 when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the free end of the detent which lies above the lower forwardly projecting portion of the bonding member, is engaged by a suitable means such as the surface 3a on the bonding member as shown in Fig. 3, so that the detent will be shifted on its pivot 10 to carry the projection 17 over the head 16 of the plunger 13, the plunger yielding during this action and springing back of the projection 17, so that when the last is again expanded, the spring will act on the detent to'hold it in engage ment with the abutment 9.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a last in which an abutment is provided on one part for engagement by a pivoted detent or lock on the other part. This pivoted detent or lock has a projection adapted to be engaged on either side thereof by a yielding device preferably in the form of a spring pressed plunn ger movable in a straight line, provision be ing made on the part carrying the abutment for engaging the detent to shift the latter on the collapsing movement of the last, so that the plunger will engage with one side of the projection on the detent to move the detent v to locking position after thefdetent has been depressed manually to cause the plunger to engage the other side of the projection` l/Vliat I claim as, my invention and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent is:
A last comprising a fore part and a heel part divided by a cut providing a V-shaped opening at tlie top, a bonding member pivotally connected with one of the last parts and rigidly connected to :thewotlier of the last parts, Saidrbonding member having an abutment formed thereon and exposed'at the V-sliaped opening, a detent exposed for manual operation Vat the V-sliaped opening` said abut-ment'and also a projecting portion Y ybelow arranged to cooperate With the under face of the projection on which the abutfment is formed to limit the outward movement of the detent, anda spring acting on the detent tomove it into Cooperation with theabutment. ,Y Y A JOHN C. SGHELTER.
