The object of this invention is to provide;
a change making device of this character;

rable and susceptible of more economical manufacture and upkeep, the arts of the present invent-ionrequiring litt e or no attention during the life of the machine and at the same time being extremely easy and smooth in operation. V
Another object is to provide device of this character having detachably organized; therewith a register actuated by the amount purchased keys of the machine and preserving a record of the total of the amounts ,terredembodiment of the lnvention, the numeral 1 designates the housing of the purchased. At the forward end of the housing a coin magazine, designated generally at 2 is provided and within the coin magazine stacks of coins 3'are arranged and are supported at their lower ends by any suitabl type of support, one such support being shown for the sake of illustrationas comprisingan angle bar l Z having its vertical, flange bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the structure of the housing and having its horizontal flange disposed .to sup-portv the stacks of coins and if found desirable suitably cut away beloweach stack, as: shown in Figure 5. Below the coin stacks a delivervclmte 5 is arranged so that the coins which are ejected from the stacks are fed down to the readily accessible trough of the delivery chute. These elements in themselves form no part of the present invention and of course may be of any type or construction and are referred to and shown generally merely for the sake of illustration.
At this point it is to be understood that the novel features of the present invention are provided in units so as to be adapted to effect the changing of coins of various denominations. This is illustrated to advantage in the arrangement shown in Figures 1 and 2, wherein four suchunits designated at 6, 7, 8 and 9 are provided. These units differ from each other only in that the novel structural features which characterize the present invention are duplicated or provided in progressively increasing number in the units 6, 7, 8 and 9 in order to adapt the machine for making change for coins of the value of $1.00; $.50; $25 and $.10. Obviously the novel structural features may be duplicated to any desired degree. 7
In view ofthe foregoing it will beunderstood that it will be sufficient to describe one of these units such for instance as the unit provided for changing coins of the value of $.25, and this description will apply to the other unitsof the invention except that the structural features thus described are duplicated in different degrees or provided in different numbers inthe other-units.
In the unit 7 as well as in the other units, an ejector, designated generally at 10 is pro vided for each coin stack and each ejector is housed and operated in an individual cell or opening 10 provided therefor in the structure of the housing. Each ejector comprises a sliding ejector plate 11 mounted for horizontal sliding movement in guide grooves 12 provided in the opposite walls of its cells. The forward end of each ejector plate 11 is provided with a curved notch 13 which conforms to the portion of the periphcry of the lowermost coin of the stack with.

A coil spring 15 is arranged in the opening 11 and engages the front wall of said opening at one end and the bars of an open rectangular frame 16 at its other end, the frame 16 being secured to the ejector plate 12 and sliding therewith so that the coil spring 15 is effective to resiliently hold the ejector plate retracted and against movement tending to eject coins from the stack with which the ejector is associated.
A plurality of sliding plungers 17 is provided, there being one such plunger for each ejector, and in the embodiment shown there are three such plungers and three stacks of coins, two stacks of 10- coins and one stack of 5c coins. As shown in the drawings each plunger 17 is mounted for horizontal reciprocatory movement on a plurality of peripherally grooved rollers 18 suitably journaled on shafts 19 carried by the housing, the plungers 17 being prevented from being vertically displaced by smooth retaining bars 20 carried by the housing and arranged immediately above the plungers.
Means is provided for selectively rendering the plungers active or inactive with respect to the ejectors with which they are associated so that when the plungers are actuated they are effective to operate the ejectors or not under the control of the means now to be described. This means includes a: vertically reciprocable connecting plate 21' for each ejector, each such plate 21 being mounted for vertical sliding movement in the slot 14 of the sliding plate 11 of the ejec tor withwhich it is associated and being disposed to slidably engage one side of the open frame 16, connected to such sliding plate 11 Then the plate 21 is lowered as far as it may be in the slot 14; it lies in the path of the plunger associated with the ejector so that when the plunger is actuated and moves forwardly its motion will be transmit: ted to thesliding plate 11 of the ejector. On the contrary when the plate 21 is raised to a point where it is almost withdrawn from the cell or opening 10 it will lie out of the path of the plunger so that the motion of the plunger will not be transmitted to the sliding plate 11 of the ejector.
For the purpose of controlling these connecting plates 21 as well as for other purposes which will hereinafter appear, a key 22 is provided for each plate 21 and are herein described as the amount purchased keys. Each key 22 includes a stem 23 slidably mounted in a bearing 24 and if desired held in uppermost position by means of a spring 25. The lower end of the stem 23 of each key 22 is provided with a transverse laterally extending heel 26 which engages the upper edge of a lever 27 adjacent one end thereof, the opposite end of the lever being pivotally mounted on a shaft 28. One such lever 27 is provided for eachkey but the shaft 28 serves as a common fulcrum for all the levers. Intermediate its ends each lever 22 is connected by a link 29 with one end of a lifting lever 30 fulcrumed on a shaft 31 and having its forward end connected, as at 32, with a connecting plate 21. Thus each ejector is independently controlled from its individual key 22.
Means is provided for releasably holding the keys 22 depressed against the action of the springs 26 and for this purpose a plurality of spring pressed detents 33 are provided, there being one such detent 33 for each key 22 and all of the detents being pivotally mounted on a common supporting shaft 33*. The hooked ends 24 of the detents engageable with lugs or teeth provided on the stems 23 of the key 22 and the hooked ends 34 and lugs 35 are provided,
with-coacting inclined surfaces 36 and 37 whereby the detents and teeth are automatically engaged when the keys are depressed. Aspring pressed release key 38 is provided and its stem 39 carries at its lower end a laterally extending bar 40 which is common to all of the detents 85 and engageable therewith for the purpose of swinging the detents so vas to disengage their hooked ends 34' from the teeth 35. The detents 33 have tail extensions 41 so as to be automatically disengaged in certain stages of the operation as will hereinafter more fully appear.
vvThe plungers of each unit are actuated from a single key and in unit 7 now being described such key is designated at 45, and is herein termed the amount tendered key. Such key has its stem 46 mounted in a bearing 47 and is springpressed, as at 48. The lower end of the stem 46 carries a laterally extending horizontal bar 49 which engages the top edges of a number of levers 50 adjacent the rear ends thereof. The forwardends of the levers 50 are pivotally mounted on a shaft 51. One such lever 50 is provided for each plunger 20 and as there are bar 49 carried by the stem 46 of the key engages all of these levers. As these levers 5O swing downwardly the bellcrank levers 53 are rotated about their fulcrum 54 since they are-connected to the levers by the links'52, and this movement of the-bell crank levers is in turn transmitted to the p-lungers 17 by the .pin and slot .connections 55. YVhether or. not the movement of the plungers is transmitted to the sliding plates of the ejectors to eject the coins fromthe stacks with which the ejectors are associated depends .onwhether or not the keys 22 have been depressed as has been previously described.
MIeans is provided for preventing actuationof the ej ectors until atleast one amount purchased key has been depressed and includes a pair of rods 60, one such rod being arranged at each side ofthe housing and both of the rods being arranged in the same horizontal plane and parallel to the plungers 17. As shown in the drawings a number of peripherally grooved rollers 59 rotatably mounted on thesame shafts 19 which carrythe similar rollers 18 for the plungers 17 support the rods '60 and the same retaining bars 20 which coact with the plungers 17 also prevent vertical displacement of the rods 60. At their rear ends these rods 60 are operatively associated by pin and slot connection 61 with a bell crank lever 62 fulcrumed on the shaft 54 and con,- nected by links 63 to the arms 64 of a U shapedframe 65, the legs of which are pivotally mounted on the shaft 51 and the body portion 66 of which is extended downwardly and engaged-with the underside of the levers 50 and thus it is that any downward movement of the levers'50 must also beaccompanied by a downward movement of the frame 65 and consequently by a forward At the formovement of the side rods 60. ward ends of the rods 60, latches 67 are arranged; these latches being pivotally mounted on the side walls of the casing or housing 1 and being engage'able with pins 68 projecting laterally from the side bars 66 to prevent movement of the side rods and consequently of the plungers 17 or keys 45 and associated mechanism. It is proposed to have the latches 67 under the control of the amount purchased keys 22 so that when any one or more. or these, keys are depressed the latchesare released from their pins 68. In order to. carry out this operation a U-shaped frame; 7 0 is provided and has its arms 71 pivota'lly mounted on the shaft 28. Thebody porQ tion 72 of the frameis offset downwardly and underlies and engages the lower edges of the levers 27 so that any downward movement of'any one or more of the levers' 27 which" always occurs when a key 22 is depressed must be accompanied by a down-. ward movement of the frame 70. The arms 71 of the frame 70 are connected by links 7 3 with rocking levers 74 mounted on the shaft and having their opposite ends connected by links 75 with the latches 67-. .A retractile coil springi76 is provided for each lever 74 and'has one end connect-- ed to the lever 74 and has, its opposite end connected to a lug 78 and tends to return the lever to such position as to engage the latch 67 with its pin 68. r
A register indicated generally at 79 is organized with the changemaking' device and includes a. number of disks; designated at 80, 81 and 82. The disk is detachably secured in any suitable manner to a. solid shaft 83 and on the end of the shaft83opposite the disk 80 it is enlarged and hasteeth ,84 formed thereon. The disk 81 is fixed to one end of a sleeve shaft 85 having teeth 86 formed on the. enlarged end thereof opposite the disk 81. This sleeve shaft is assembled on the solid shaft 83 and in turn it has assembled on a reduced portion thereof asccond sleeve shaft 87 which is attached to the disk 82. The disks 80 and 81 must be removably attached to their respective shafts in order to enable assembly of these parts as shown in Figure 9. Three sectors, designated at 90, are provided and each sector has formed thereon a tooth 91. One sector 90 has its tooth engaged with the teeth and the other two have their teeth engaged with the teeth 86. Each sector is pivotally mounted, as at 92 on a lever 93 and engages a. stop 94 formed on lever 93, the sector 90 being resiliently held against its stop 94 by a light retractile coil spring 95. The levers 93 are fulcrumed on the shaft 31 and areconnected by links 99 with actuating levers 100 fulcrumed on a haft 101 and con nected by pin and slot connection 102 with the stem 23 of the amount purchased keys. Thus when the amount purchased keys are depressed segments are thrown into engage ment or mesh with the teeth of their gears so that the amount registered is controlled or determined by the keys 22, it being understood that the five-cent key controls the five cent disk 80 of the register, the tencent keys 22 the ten cent disk, etc. 7
The depression of the keys 22 do not however actuate the register but only render the sameoperative or capable of operation by bringing into mesh the sectors and the teeth and shafts of the registers. The sectors are actuated when the keys 45 are depressed for as these keys 45 are depressed the side rods 60 are moved forwardly as previously described and this movement of the rods is transmitted to the sectors by means of a swinging U-shaped frame105 having arms 106 pivotally mounted on a shaft 107, the arms being connected to the side rods 60 by the pins 68 which operate in slots 108 formed in the arms 107 to provide a pin and slot connection between these parts. The body portion 109 of the frame is engageable with the sectors for swinging the same through their operative movements. Retractile coil springs 110 tend to return the frames 105 to the position shown in Figure 4.
It is to be understood that the register 79 may be of any conventional construction but for the sake of illustration one form of register is shown generally. In the register shown the periphery of the disks 80 and 81 bear decimal indicia and the disk 82 unit indicia, the indicia of disks 81 and 82 preferably progressing from one to ten and that of the disk 80 being alternately live and zero. Between the disks 81 and 82 any conventional transfer mechanism (not shown) is employed for advancing the disk 82 one step each time the disk 81 makes a complete rotation and between the disks 80 and 81 suitable transfer mechanism is employed for advancing the disk 81 one step for every two or every other step that the disk 82 is advanced. For the sake of illustration this an inclined or curved wall. In the assembly the collar is received in a cavity provided in the disk and in this same cavity five gravity pawls 117 operate, the pawls bein pivotally mounted on the adjacent latera face of the disk 80 and c'oacting with the pockets 116. Stops 118 coact withv the pawls and if found desirable light springs may be employed for resiliently holding the pawls against the stops.
In operation it will be understood'tha the keys 22 corresponding to the amount purchased are first depressed and if for instance the amount of a purchase is 10 then a single 10 key is depressed. Depression of'the keys 22 or any one of them carries out three functions in that it first selects the plungers 20 which are to be inactive to actuate their ejectors. For instance in the example given when a single 10 key is depressed the connecting plate 21 asso-' ciated with the ejector for one 10 stack is raised so that the associated plunger when actuated will slide idly through the frame 16 and coil spring 15 and will not move the plate 11 to eject the one coin from the 10 stack. The connecting plates 21 of the 5g? stack and of the other 10 stack'are however left in their lower position wherein they are disposed to be engaged by their plungers. Thesecond purpose accomplished by the depression of the key 22 is the un locking of the side rods 60 for as any one of the keys 22 is depressed the frame 77 swings downwardly under the action of the lever 27 and the latches 67 are elevated through the links 7 3 and 75 and the lever 74. The third purpose accomplished is the operative en 'agement of the operating parts of the register for the sectors are brought into engagement with the teeth of the shafts of the register as previously described. Similarly depression of the key 45 accomplishes threeends. The primary purpose of the depression of this key is the actuation of the plungers 20 which engage with the connecting plate or plates 21 which re-. main in their lower position and in the path of the plunger to actuatethe ejector with which such ejector plates are associated. The second purpose accomplished by the depression of the key 45 is the actuation of the sector 90 of the operating means for the register for as the key 45 is depressed the frame 65 is swung downwardly. The side rods 60 are advanced forwardly and the frame 105 is swung rearwardly and engages the sector to throw the same through one phase of its oscillation. The final end accomplished by the depression of the key a5 is the automatic release of the detents 35 35 to kick the detent out of engagement with its tooth 87 thereby releasin the keys 22 and permitting the springs 25 to return them to normal position and also permitting the latches 67 to again engage the pins 68 and the connecting plates 21 to return to lowermost position.
It is to be understood that all of the parts of the register 7 9 and its actuating and controlling mechanism are detachably mounted in assembly so that the register may be readily taken from the machine thereby making the use of the register optional.
I claim: a
1. In a change making device, a money changing unit including a coin holder, an ejector for said holder, a sliding plunger, a slidable connecting plate between the sliding plunger and the ejector and a key for controlling said slidable connecting plate.
2. In a change making device, a money changing unit including a plurality of coin holders, ejectors for the holders, a plurality of sliding plungers, key operated means controlling the plungers, shiftable connecting elements between the sliding plungers and the ejectors, keys selectively controlling the shiftable connecting elements, locking mechanism controlled by said keys for preventing operation of the plungers and the key operated means thereon until one or more of said keys have been depressed.
3. In a change making device, a money changing unit including a plurality of coin holders, ejectors for the holders, a plurality of sliding plungers, key operated means controlling the plungers, shittable connecting elements between the plungers and the ejectors, keys selectively controlling the shiftable connecting elements, a register, means controlled by said keys for setting the register and determining the action thereof, and motion transmission means between said key operated means, and said last mentioned means for actuating the register from the key operated means. 7
4. In a change mak'ng device, a money changing unit including a plurality of coin holders, ejectorg for the holders, a plurality of sliding plungers, key operated means controlling the plungers, shiftable connecting elements between the plungers and the ejectors, keys selectively controlling the shiftable connecting elements, a register, means controlled by said keys for setting the register and determining the action thereof, motion transmission means between said key oper ated means, and said last mentioned means f r a t at g he r g ster item the key P- erated means, and locking mechanism controlled by said keys for preventing operation of the plungers and of the key operated means therefor until one or more of said keys have been depressed.
5. In a change making device, a money changing unit including a plurality of coin holders, ejectors for said holders including horizontal sliding ejector plates having slots therethrough, spring means for maintaining saidplates retracted, a plurality of sliding plungers, key operated means controlling the plungers, vertically slidable connecting plates operatively fitted in the slot of the ejector plates and adapted to be positioned to be engaged by the plunger or to be disposed to lie out of the path thereoi and keys for selectively controlling the position of said connecting plates.
6. In a change making device, amoney changing .unit including a plurality of coin holders, ejectors cooperating with the holders, a plurality of sliding plungers, key operated means controlling the plungers and comprising a plurality of key controlled levers, and motion transmission means between the lever and the plungers, a frame engaging said levers and actuated therefrom, side rods, motion transmission between the frame and the side rods whereby the side rods partake of the motion of the levers, latches cooperable with the side rods, shiftable connecting elements between the sliding plun-. ger and the ejectors, keys selectively controlling the shiftable connecting elements, and release means for said latches controlled by said keys.
7. In a change making device, a money changing unit including a coin holder, an ejector for said holder, a sliding plunger, a shiftable connecting element between thesliding plunger and the ejector, keys for selectively controlling said connecting elements, key operated means for actuating the sliding plungers, a register, operating means for the register connectible and disconnectible therewith under the control of said keys, and means for actuating said operating means from the key operated means.
8. In a change making device, a money changing unit including a coin holder, an ejector for said holder, a sliding plunger, a shiftable connecting element between the sliding plunger and the ejector, keys for selectively controlling said connecting elements, key operated means for actuating the sliding plungers, a register, operating means for the register including driven elements carried by the register, driving elements connectible and disconnectible with the driven elements under the control of the key operat ed means, and a swinging frame actuated from the key operated means and engageable with the driving elements for actuating the same,
9. In a change making device, a money changing unit including a plurality of coin holders, ejectors for the coin holders, a plu rality of sliding plungers, and means for mounting the plungers for sliding movement including rollers, keys controlling the engagement of the plungers With the ejectors and key operated means for actuating the plungers.
10. In a change making device, a money changing unit including a plurality of coin holders, ejectors for the holders, a plurality of sliding plungers, key operated means controlling the sliding plungers including a plurality of levers, a single key controlling said levers, and motion transmission means between the levers and the plungers, slide rods connected with the levers and constrained to partake of the movement of the plungers,
locking mechanism cooperable with the slide rods, shiftable connecting elements between the sliding plungers and the ejectors, keys for selectively controlling said ghiftable connecting elements and means under the control of the keys for releasing the locking means.
11. In a-change making device, a money changing unit including a plurality of coin holders, ejectors for the coin holders, a plurality of sliding plungers, key operated means controlling the plungers, shiftable connecting elements between the plungers, and the ejectors, a plurality of keys, a lever actuated from each key, a lifting lever connected to each of aid levers and to a shiftable connecting element.
