PATENT OFEIoE.
KINGSTON GODDARD, OF RICHMOND, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN ORDNANCE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,024, dated April 21, 1874; application filed February 12, 1874.
To all zrhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rev. KINGSTON GOD- DARD, of Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York. have invented new and useful Improvements in Cannon, Mortars, and other Fire-Arms, of which the following is a specification.
The drawing represents a sectional side View of my invention.
This invention has for its object to provide that kind of cannon, mortars, 860., which are made with a solid stock with means whereby they may be readily pointed to any desired object.
The invention consists in making the lower end of the solid stock in form of a sphere, to fit a spherical recess in the support, so that the gun may be readily pointed to any object.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents the stock, or What might be termed the barrel, of my new gun or fire-arm, the same being solid, and preferably of cylindrical form, although it may be prismatic, or even conical, or of other shape, if desired. The lower end of said stock or barrel is made in form of a sphere, B, to fit a spherical recess in the supporting-frame C, so that the gun may be movable in said frame, to be readily directed to any side. The outer or upper end of the stock or barrel A may be flat, as shown,
or rounded, pointed, or of other shape, as may be desired. D is the projectile, made hollow, to be fitted over the stock A, and having a chamber, E, Within which the charge of powder or other explosive agent may be deposited. A vent or touch-hole, a, is made into the projectile, for the purpose of permitting the ignition of the charge by suitable means. When the frame 0 is properly supported, and the charge in the chamber E exploded, it is evident that'the projectile D will be discharged in the direction indicated by the position of the stock or barre-l A, and that its motion will be entirely controlled by the straight shape of the stock although for many purposes it may be desirable, also, to make the stock curved, the effect in firing being substantially the same.
fired. The stock A may be rifled, if desired.
I claim as my invention The solid stock A, secured to its base or carriage by a ball-and-socket joint, so as to turn in different planes around, for the purpose specified.
KINGSTON GODDARD.
Witnesses:
A. V. BRIEsEN, A. H. ADAMS.
The longer the hollow projectile is made the straighter will be its course when
