Description

LSOQQQS H. M.HEER
BURNER ATTACHMENT:
Flled June 10 1922 Jlufiy 1 1924.
Fatent July 1, I924.
HENRY M. SHEER, 0F QUINCY, ILLINOIS,
L ATENT ASSIGNOR TO H. M. SHEER COMPANY, OF
QUINCY, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
BURNER ATTACHMENT.
Application filed June 10, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, HENRY M. SHEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burner Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in Burner Attachments, and the present invention is an improvement on the burner set forth in my application for Letters Patent filed June 15, 1921, Serial No. 177761.
The function of the present invention is to increase the efliciency of the burner, especial.- ly when it is desired to carry a large flame.
Normally the flame is held below the spreader-cap, but there are frequent occasions when it becomes necessary to maintain an unusually large flame to meet severe weather conditions. 7
The present invention permits this increase in flame and produces perfect combustion while having no deleterious effect on the quality of the flame when the same is carried low in the burner proper. Ordinarily to increase the heating flame of the burner, it would be made larger in diameter, or the height of the entire burner would be increased, that is to say by merely extending or lengthening the two perforated screens, together with the outer casing; but the objection to this is the difiiculty of securing perfect combustion when carrying a low or medium flame. Y
My burner as set forth in the above-entitled application with this extension, produces a perfect combustion from a small or low flame up to what would ordinarily be termed a maximum flame, extending slightly past the spreader-cap. Upon attempting to carry a hlgher flame than this, even by the use of an adjustable air-valve, the flame is very apt to smoke. By the use of this extension, it is possible to increase the flame until it reaches the to of the extension, and still have perfect com ustion.
Furthermore, this extension is an article complete in itself, which may be applied to burners already in use without alteration.
In the accompanyin drawings The figure is a vertlcal section through a Serial No. 567,451.
burner with my improved extension applied.
A, represents my improved burner fully described in the above entitled application. B, represents the attachment or extension which is adapted to take the place of the stance, by a central bolt 4 and a nut 5 screwed thereon. The extension B might be variously constructed, and the foregoing is typical, as it is simple and includes few parts, easy to make, and can be made and sold at a moderate price. It is, at the same time,
easily applied to burners already in use, and
is most effective in accomplishing the functions required of it.
The base is formed with an annular side 6, which fits the upper edge of the inner tube or screen of the burner where the extension or attachment rests conveniently, due to its own weight. By reason of this extension, air is carried and distributed some distance, that is to say, in view of the extension above the burner supporting the combustion of the flame surrounding it to the very top of the extension. When not needed, as is often the case, the extension is removed, and when desired for use, it is a very simple matter to place it on the top of the burner.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described including a burner, and anextension composed of a flaring base open at the top and having orifices in the bottom adapted to be supported on the burner, a reticulated cylinder supported on the base, and means for securing the cylinder and base together.
2. A device of the character described including a burner and an extension composed of a flaring base open at the top and having orifices in the bottom, adapted to be removably supported on the burner, an imperforate top, a reticulated cylinder between the base and top, and means for clamping said parts of the extension rigidly together.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENRY M. SHEER.
