Application filed 22,
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, REN JEAN CAMILLE TAMrrnR, citizen of the Republic of France, and resident of Boulogne-sur-Seine, France, have invented new and useful Improvements to Cocks, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification.
The cocks heretofore used are generally made of brass or bronze, very often polished and sometimes nickel plated.
Due to oxidation, the polished cocks have to be frequently cleaned and in a great number of cases it is necessary to use such materials as mineral soap which are liable to penetrate into the stufling box when the cock is being operated, thus contributing to the wear on the screw.
As regards the nickel plated cocks, the layer of nickel provided thereon is not strong enough to withstand frequent service and the objectionable features mentioned above in connection with the polished cocks are also apt to be present.
This invention is characterized by the fact that, in order to prevent both oxidation and wear, the cock is fitted with a casing or shell of some non-oxidiaable and easily washable material such as porcelain, sandstone, earthenware, glass, etc. Said casing is not sealed to the cock, but is merely fastened on its outer surface in such a way that it may be easily removed if it is desired either to position the cock or to replace the valve of the cock by disassembling the stufling box.
In order to render the details of the invention perfectly clear, it will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings showing one embodiment thereof:
Figure 1 shows the body of the cock.
Figure 2 shows the key or handle of the cock.
Figure 3 shows the upper member of the casing or shell.
Figure 4 shows the lower member.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view of Figure 2. f
Figure 6 is a fragmental cross sectional view on line 6-6, Fig. 8, with the upper casing member removed.
Figure 7 shows certain details.
Figure 8 is a central longitudinal sectional views showing the various parts in assembled relation.
In the accompanying drawing, l is the body of the cock. Thewater is admitted through branch 2, and pours out through 1922. serial No, the outlet The stuffing box `is diagrammatically shown at Ll.
5 is the rod or valve stem supporting at one `end the valve 15l and at the other hand the operating key or handle 6.
This cock may be encased 'n porcelain or other non-oxidizable material.
The previously-mentioned casing or shell comprises the upper and lower members 7 and 8, which members, together with the key or handle 6, which may be regarded constituting a third member of the casing, are secured to the cock in the following way:
The lower member 8 is irst fitted over the lower portion of the cock and the spring 9 is positioned across branch 2 of the cock and straddles a part of the lower member, and ilts ends are hooked over the porcelain lugs The upper member 7 is then fitted over the upper portion of the body, this member having an enlargement or boss 11 adapted to receive the spring 9 and the lugs 10. The lower portion of the member 7 is so arranged as to cover the entire upper surface of the member 8, the cylindrical walls of which are of less diameter.
A spiral spring 'i4 is then positioned so as to press the member 7 against the body of the cock, such spring however not being necessarily required, for if the members are constructed with the proper care it is suflicient merely to fit the member 7 over the body of the cock.
The key 6 is so constructed that its lower opening l2 is larger than the top portion of member 7. Said key is secured to the top portion of the rod 5 by means of a cylindrical member 13.
It will be found that owing to the way in which the lower member of the casing is positioned and to the form of the parts of the casing, the water which might drip from the key will be prevented from penetrating into the internal metal portion.
I claim as my invention l. The combination, with a cock comprising a body and a valve rod disposed therein, of a removable casing comprising separable upper and lower members adapted to fit over the upper and lower portions of the cock body, and a key for operating the valve rod having an opening in its lower part wherein the upper end of the upper casing member is enclosed; substantially as described.
2. The combination, with 2 1 oook eomprising e body and a valve rod disposed there- 11n, of e removable easing comprising sepa rable -npper and lower members adapted to fit over the'ipp'r and lower portions Iofthe cook body, the lower member having lugs at opposite sides thereof, a spring straddling one part ofthe lower member and having its ends engaged with said lugs, to hold said lower member in place on lthe eoclgbody, Aand Ineens 'for operatingV the Valve rod.
3. The combination, witha oook oom-orising e body Aand e `valve rod disposed tierein, lof 'a removable easing kcomprising` separable upper end lower members adapted to fit over the upper and lower portions of the eok"body, `the, lower member `hzlwinfgg lugs at oppositesides thereof, a. springstraddling one part of the lower member and having itsends engaged with seid lugs, to hold said lower -memberin placeon the cook body, und e key for operating the valve rod having en opening in its lower part wherein the upper end of the upper casing member is enclosed;
"substantelly as described.
In testimonywhereofl have signedrthis speoiizrtmn in the presence of a. subscribing witness.
