Description

c. E. MURPHY.
GAGE COCK.
APPLICATION FlLED'MAY24, 1919.
v inventor r 0267"] Ed ar wily UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES EDGAR MURPHY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO FREDERICK C. KOETZLA AND ONE-THIRD TO WILLIAM G. CLARK,- BOTH OF ST.
LOUIS, MISSOURI.
To all whom it may concern:
America, a resident of the city of St. Louis,
in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage- Cocks, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. i
My invention relates to a gage cock for use in connection with a steam boiler, and has for its object to provide a detachable valve tip in a cock of this kind, thereby making it possible to renew the valve tip at a slight expense without renewal of the. entire valve stem.
Figure I is a side elevation, partly in longitudinal section, of a gage cock containing my invention. I
Fig. II is a cross section taken on line IIII, Fig. I.
In the drawings, A designates a gage cock casing having a valve chamber B therein provided witha valve seat C The casing A has connected to it a usual stufiing box D, through which a valve stem E operates.
The parts thus far described are of common form, except for the structure ofthe valve stem, as will be described.
In the inner end of the valve stem is a pocket 1, extending longitudinally of the stem. 2 designates a valve tip provided .with a stem 3 removably arranged in the pocket 1 in the valve stem E and held therein by a key'5, removably arranged in a transverse keyway in the wall surrounding the valve stem pocket 1, and seated in an annular groove 4 in the stem 3 of the valve tip 2. The valve stem tip 2 is readily secured to the valve stem E upon the insertion of the key 5 into the valve stem, and the stem of the valve tip is so held to the valve stem as to perform its function as perfectly as the function would be performed if the valve stem tip were an integral part of the valve stem. Whenever the valve stem tip becomes pitted or otherwise damaged in service, it may be quickly detached from the Specification of Letters Patent.
valve stem and replaced by a new tip at a mlnimum ofexpense as compared with the expense'which would be involved by replac-' ing a complete valve stem having a valve tip integral therewith, as commonly made.
y reference to Fig. I it will be seen that the stem of the valve tip 2 is considerably smaller in diameter than the diameter of the pocket 1 in the valve stem. These differences in diameter permit lateral play of v the valve tip stem relative to valve stem and provide for the valve tip bein positively presented to'the valve seat C i the valve stem is -not in direct alinement with the valve seat.
The key 5 by which the stem of the valve tip 2 is detachably held in the pocket of the valve stem E is of semi-circular shape and is slipped through an opening in the Wall surrounding the pocket in the stem, so that it enters the annular groove 4 in the stem of the valve tip, and is spaced from the cylindrical'wall thereof, so as to partly surround said valve tip stem with an engagement which effectually retains the valve tip and affords a wearing surface between'the stem of the tip and the key, which will not become impaired by long continued use.
I claim:
In a gage cook, a valve stem having a pocket therein at its inner end and a slotted key way in the wall of said pocket, a valve .tip having a stem positioned in said pocket,
the stem of said valve tip being of a lesser diameter and length than said pocket, said valve tip stem being provided with an annular groove, and a semlcircular key, having its outer periphery flush with the periphery of said valve stem, extending through said slotted key way to said pocket rotatable and has lateral and longitudinal play in said pocket. In testimony that I hereunto affix m si nature.
CHARLE EEGAR MURPHY.
I claim, the foregoing Patented Oct. 26, 1920.
