To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Bown, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hack-Saw Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hack saw frames and more particularly to a frame which is easily and quickly adjusted to receive blades of different lengths.
The objects of the invention are to provide a strong, rigid and readily adjustable saw frame, provided with means for facilitating the quick and easy removal of a saw blade and insertion of a diiferent size blade, together with means for rigidly adjusting the frame to accommodate blades of any length and means for positively clamping the frame in any adjusted position.
The above and other objects may be attained by constructing the saw frame in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a khack saw frame embodying the invention;

The handle portion is provided with the bearing 3 through which the end of the bar 2 is slidably extended, a wedge member 4 being slidably mounted in the longitudinal groove 5 of the handle portion and provided with the upper groovedv face 6, which engages the under surface of the bar 2, the lower side of the wedge member being provided with the worm rack 7 for engagement with the worm 8, which is journaled upona spindle 9 located through'the socket 10 in the handle portion.
A transverse pin 11 is fixed in the wedge member and extends through opposite sides of the socket 10 to limit the movement of the wedge in either direction and prevent the same from beroering disengaged from ECE. i

A depending arm 12 is rigidly secured to the handle portion and has a bearing 13 in its lower end through which is journaled the headed screw 14, a coil spring 15 encircling the screw between the head 16 thereof and the internal shoulder 17of the bearing, tending to normally exert a pull upon the screw against the thumb nut 18, which is mounted upon the threaded end thereof.
The screw 14 is grooved longitudinally as at 19 and the knurled locking ring 2O which is interposed between the nut 18 and the bearing 13, is provided with an inwardly projecting lug 21 mounted in said groove and with the diametrically opposed lugs 22 arranged to be received into notches 23 in the adjacent side of the bearing portion 13.
As there are four of these notches 23 located at equal intervals around the bearing portion 13, and the locking ring 2O is lixed upon the screw 14, it will be seen that the screw can be locked in four different positions. The head 16 of the screw is provided with the flat portion 24 having a transverse stud 25 extending through one side thereof.
The forward downturned end of the arm 2 has a bearing portion 26 mounted thereon through which is journaled a headed pint-le 27, the head 28 thereof being provided with lugs 29 similar to the lugs 22 upon the locking ring, arranged to be received into notches 30, similar to the notches 23 above described.
rlhe inner end portion of the pintle 27 is attened and provided with the transverse stud 31 which, together with the stud 25, provides means for securing the saw blade 32, the apertures 33 at the opposite end portions thereof receiving the studs 25 and 31. From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof will be readily understood.
On adjusting the blade to the frame, the forward end of the blade is first attached by placing the opening 33 at that end in engagement with the stud 31. |The wedge is then loosened by means of the worm 8, permitting the bar 2 to slide longitudinally until the opening 33 at the opposite end of the blade may be engaged with the stud 25 upon the screw 14.
The screw 14V is then turned to the desired angle, and the thumb nut 18 tightenedg The wedge 4L must also be tightened at this time by the worin, making the frame rigid and stretching the saw blade taut between the studs 25 and 31.
It will be obvious that a rigid7 strong and Conveniently operable frame is thus provided, which `provides means for easily and readily adjusting the frame to aeooininodate any desired length of saw blade and to quickly and readily elainp the blade rigidly in position within the traine in any desired angle thereto.
A hack saw frame including a handle portion comprising a pistol grip and a depending arm, a bearing in the lower end of the depending arm, an L-shaped bar slidably engaging the upper part of the handle portion, a edge assoeiated with the handle portion for locking the L-shaped bar in adjusted position, a worm rack upon the wedge, a worm journaled in the handle portion and engaging the worm rack, a bearing in the end of the L-shaped bar, a saw blade supported between said bearings, means adjacent to the handle portion for placing ytension. upon the saw blade, a transverse pin upon the wedge and a longitudinal slot in the handle portion engaged by the pin.
