Description

GAR-L HENDERSON, OIF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MIEHLE PRINTING PRESS @t MFCTURNG COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOS, A CORPORATION OF LLINOIS.
SHEET-SEPARATING MEANSt application filed February To all wf'min 2'! 11mg/ concern.'
Be it known that. l'. (hun, llizsnnnsos, a citizen of the llnited States, residingr at lChicago. in the county ot Cook and State. ot illinois. have invented certain new and usei'ul improvements in Means, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for sepa rating sheet material,
@ne object oi the invention is to cause separation of one sheet from another in a pile in a simple and elticient manner whereby bnt a single sheet will be withdrawn at a time from said pile..
Another object is to provide improved means for causing separation -o't' sheet material in a manner to meet the requirements tor successful commercial use. Y
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the ac commntyinesheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation ot sheet sepa.- ratiniz mechanism embodying my invention; and
`Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan View ot the same arrangement.
The various novel features oi my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly rointed ont in thelappended claims.
Referringto the. figures of the drawings, it will loe noted that I have disclosed my invention in connection with a pile 1,0 oisheet material, the sheets of which. are to he Withdrawn one at a time.
At one side of 'the pile of sheet material there is provided a lolower 11. ot` any suitable type. but preferably the same as that shown in my co-pendine' application` Serial Number" 533.188, filed February l` 1922. rfhis blower directingo its jets of air into the pile of sheet material flutis the pile, causing a preliminary separation between the sheets near `the top ot' the pile. A hollow suction foot 12 is provided which. as here shown, operates at the corner of the pile and is provided in this instance with but a single suction opening 13' in the straight brit inclined lotver wall'lt of the.
suction foot l2. IThe suction exerted through tl'e foot 12 is sutliciently `great so that the top sheet'lf of the pile when blown np- Wardly during the tluing7 action is drawn Sheet-Separating 1, 1.922. Serial No. 533,181.
t'o and held by the suction toot. 1L). The lower wall 1-/1 ot' the suction lfoot 19 is pret erahly inclined to the top sur'aee ot the pile to increase the separation ot' the top sheet 15 from the second sheet 1G al the Corner portion as shown. Immediately7 after the top sheet 15 is attracted to and lield by the suction toot 12. a second suction means 17 passes downwardly into engagement with vin);r complete separation.
By means ot this coml'iinationot elements the Aseparation of the top sheet trom the see-0nd sheet is insured', for the blower 1l` f'lnt'ting' the pile causesa preliminary separation ot the top sheet Ytrom the second, the suction toot 12 increases the separation and the third suction means 17 increases still further the separation and positively insures the separation ot the second sheet from the firstii the second sheet has adhered s0Inewhat to the first sheet up to this point.
'lhe mechanism tor-operating the suction means 17 will not be. described, as such is 'fully disclosed in applieants eti-pending application. Serial Number 532.194-, tiled Fehruary 1. 1922, snfiice it: to say that suitable mechanism is provided tor reeiproeatin5 r the suction means` 1.7 in a vertical direction and that. the suction means 17 discontinnes its downward movement as soon as its suction shoe. 19 engages the top sheet ot paper 15 to prevent said top sheet from heineY forced back into engagement with the second sheet;
By means of this arrangement sheet material in a pile is separated in e, manner to meet the requirements l'or successful commercial use.
It is my intention t-o cover all modifications ialling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In sheet separating mechanism, the combination of means for finding a pile ot' sheet material, means for drawing the top sheet away from the second sheet and holdiner said tcp Sheet without passing into engagcmen: with the pile, and suction means foe drawing said top sheet further away from the second sheet and away from Said iii-et (hawiner means, causing said top sheetI to be flexel to assist in its separation from the Secmul sheet if the latter has adhered to the top sheet.
2. In sheet separating mechanism, the combination ci a blower foi* uffing a. pile of sheet maierial: a suction foot for drawingr the tcp sheet away from the second sheet and holdingr said 'top sheet, and Suction means fm' drawing Said top sheet further awa)Y i'rmn the second sheet and away from Said suelion fonti, causing Said top sheet to hc flexed lo in ils separation from thc second sheet if the latter has'adheied to 'the lop sheet.
f5. in sheet separating mechanism, ille cemhinaticn of means for iuiiing e pile 0I" sheet material, a suction foot for draw- .in efr Said mp sheet away from the second sheet anti .holding said top sheet, seie sul: tion foot having its bottom portion inciin )ci with respect to the top euffaceo' the for increasing the distance between he sep and second sheets. and means for chewing' said top sheet fufther awayrem the second Sheet and away fiom said suction foeeaue ing said *bop sheet to be flexed to assisi in its separation 'from the Vsecolari sheet if the latter has adhered to the top sheet.
- 4i. n sheet separating mechanism, 'the combination of meansfor iiuing e pile of sheet materialfand apluiaiity of suction members which opeiage on the iop SlieeiiY :c separating it'from he second sheet, said suction members acting in succession and one of said suction members withdrfwin;4
saidiop sheet from another of Said sucifm members piepaaei'y Sheei'. being eompletely Wihdrawn from "che pile.
