IMPROVEMENT IN CANS AND BOXES FOR PRESERVING FRUITS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,893, dated April 21, 1874; application filed March 24,1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE TEYssoNNnAU, of Paris, France, have invented certain new and usefulV Improvements in Cans and Boxes for Preserving Fruit, &c., of which the following isa specification:
This invention relates to the covers or caps of sheet-metal cans and boxes. Such covers have, in instances, been provided with tongues or tags projecting laterally from. and made in one piece with the cover, by taking hold of which with pliers, pinchers, or a key, the covers can be wrenched or torn from the cans. To admit 0f this operation being performed with facility it is necessary that the cap should be united with the can by a dat or horizontal soldered lapjoint; but to render such an application of the cover or cap effective and readily accomplished, I find that it is necessary to provide means whereby both the cover shall be guided and maintained in its place, and the solder or cement employed shall be prevented from extending inward beyond the lapped contiguous surfaces of the cap and can. To this en d I make the tongued cap with a depression or groove, forming on the under side of the cap a ridge or bead that, by its contour and size, is adapted to iit snugly within the openin g in the can to which the cap is applied, thus constituting at once a shoulder to guide and assure the cap yin its proper position, and a stop or barrier to prevent the solder from passing from between the overlapping surfaces of the cap and can into the interior of the can.
The manner in which I carry my invention into effect will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, S, 9, 13 represent vertical central sections of various styles of cans. Figs. 1b, 2b, 3b, 4ms, and 10 are plans of the cans in Figs. l, 2, 3, 4, 9, respectively.
Fig. 5 is a top viewof the cover detached.
The can is indicated by the letter A, the cover or cap by B. In every instance, as seen, the cover is provided with tag, tongue, or equivalent device, C, either in the shape of a flat finger or strip, as in Figs. 5 and 7, which may be taken hold of `by a split key, as in- Fig. 12 at D, pliers, or other suitable instrument, or a prismatic loop or socket, as in Figs. 2, 3,
&c., to receive the correspondin gl y-shaped shank of a tool, such as shown at E, Fig. 11, or a cylindrical loop, as in Fig. et, to receive any suitable tool, or to receive a bail, F, as in Figs. 1 and 6.
The cover, in all the instances given, overlaps the top of the can around the opening therein, there thus being formed a fiat horizontal joint, the solder being applied between the fiat contiguous surfaces of the cap and can that form the joint.
Now, in order to guide'and assure the cover in Vits position over the opening in the can, and also to prevent the solder from passing inwardly beyond the horizontal lap, and into the body of the can, I Aform the cover, in every case, with a groove or depression, a, which follows the contour of the opening in the case, and forms on the Linder side of the cover a guide ridge or bead, which its snugly within the opening'in the top of the can, thus constituting a shoulder bearing against the edges ofthe can-top surrounding the opening, serving to enable the operator to at once put the cap accurately in place, serving as well to assure and maintain the cap in such position. It also serves at the same time as a stop or barrier to check and prevent the iniluX of solder, which would otherwise pass inwardly be- I tween and beyond the contiguous surfaces of the lap-joint.
In this feature is my invention mainly comprised, and, therefore, while I do not broadly claim a tongued cover united with the top of the can by a horizontal joint,
I do claim as my invention- The combination, with the can or box, of a tongued cover adapted to be united with the same by a iiat soldered joint, and formed on its under side with a guide shoulder or rib, fitting the opening in the can to which the cover is applied, and operating as shown and set forth.
