GEQBJGE R.. PRATT, OF RCHMOND, VIRGINIA.
DRINKING FOUNTAIN.
Application filed January 10, 1918, Serial No. 211,230. Renewed March 22, 1923.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, GEORGE R. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico, State of Virginia, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking Fountains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others l0 skilled in the art to which it appertains, to
make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to drinking foun tains.
The object of the invention is to construct a drinking fountain for public use wherein water may be supplied to drinkers through drinking nozzles in a sanitary manner. ln carrying out the invention, it is also the intention to provide a sanitary drinking fountain which may be brought into convenient reach of all persons, regardless of their height.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form` of sanitary drinking nozzle for use in connection with the fountain structure.
With the above objects in view, and snch others relating to the details of construction, as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being' had to the accompanying dra-wings.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is an elevation ofthe invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of a nozzle, and
Fig. 4- is a section therethrough.
lrReferring to the accompanying drawing there is shown one form of the invention, wherein the water main 24- passes through vertical housing or casings 25, the latter extending above the ground for a short distance, and also being extended below the pipe 24. Preferably, the casings 25 are two in number standing in parallel relation, and are connected by an arched frame 26. Telescoped within each casing 25 is a pipe 27 which may be raised and lowered with respect to the pipe 25, the guide collar 28 at its upper end encircling the vertical leg of the frame 26, and an outturned flange or collar 29 at its lower end being adapted to butt against the lower side of an inturned flange 30 on the upper end of the casing 25, so as to limit the outward movement of the pipe 27. The lower end of the pipe 27 is connected to the main 24 by means of a flexible hose 31, and when the pipe 27 is lowered Vinto the casing 25, the flexible connection 3l may fold or double therewithin. The upper end of each of the pipes 27 is provided with a nozzle 32 which includes a stem 9 having the divergent fingers or prongs 9, on the lower end, to prevent contact of the mouth of the drinker with the nozzle. Secured to the nozzle, and diverging therefrom, is a cage-like structure 10, which prevents the drinker getting the mouth close to the nozzle.
The upper end of the stem 9 is connected with a tube 10 which is secured in the side of the casing 25. lNithin this tube lO'is a spring pressed valve 12, operable by the head of the stem 11, which projects from the outer closed end thereof.
It will be understood that the number of nozzles 32 may be increased so as to permit the maximum number of persons to drink at the same time.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. ln a drinking fountain a pair of stand pipes, a supporting` arch having dependent arms connected with the stand pipes, water supply device including pipes extending from the upper ends of the stand pipes, and means for adjustably connecting the last named pipes with the arms of said arch.
2. ln a drinking fountain, a stand pipe, a water main entering the stand pipe, a water supply device including a iiexible pipe positioned in the stand-pipe and connected with the water main and another pipe connected thereto for vertical movement with respect to the stand pipe, and a downwardly inclined nozzle connected to the lastmamed pipe and having a valve connection controlling the supply of water thereto.
In testimony whereof, l atlix my signature in the-presence of two witnesses.
GEQRGE R. PRATT.
