DRAWING IMPLEMENT.

Be it known that I, J OHN C. SGHMIDTKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Lawrence and State of lVIissouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drawing Implements, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a drawing instrument, the general object of the invention being to provide a combined ruler, protractor and lettering instrument.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figur 1 is a face view of the device.

Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.

The device is made from a sheet 1 of metal or celluloid or any other suitable material and it has an elongated opening 2 formed therein, the side walls of which are grooved, as at 3. A block 4 is slidably mounted in the opening and has its edges formed to engage the grooves 3. This block is of transparent material and is divided into a plurality of spaces by the lines 5. A plurality of holes 6 are formed in the block, some of these holes being arranged in a transverse row and other holes in an inclined row, the holes in one row being alternately arranged with those in the other so that each longitudinally extending line 6, 1921. 5 has a hole therein. By placing the point of a pencil in any one of these holes and moving the same to slide the block along the opening a line will be drawn which is parallel to the side edges of the device. By this device lines can be sketched at any desired distance apart, all lines being parallel with a line drawn at the side edge of the device.

One end of the device is of semi-circular form and is provided with radiating lines marked off in degrees to form a protractor 7. One side of the device carries a linear measure and the other a metric measure.

It will thus be seen that a simple and in expeiisive device can be used as a ruler, protractor and a lettering instrument.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is A. device of the character described comprising a strip provided with an elongated opening having its side walls grooved, a block of transparent material provided zith a row of holes arranged at right angles to said strip and a second row of holes at an angle to the first named row, the holes of one row being staggered relative to the holes of the other, and said block having its edges formed to engage the groove of said wall and being slidably mounted therein.
