IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF HOLLOW DOLL-HEADS AND OTHER FIGURES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,831, dated April 21, 1874; application filed September 17, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WM. E. BROOK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Hollow Figures or other irregular forms, of

which the following is a specification:

very pliable and susceptible of being pressed into the smallest cavities of the mold to receive the relievo form from the intaglio matrix.

For very irregular forms it may be necessary to serrate the edges of the leather to facilitate its adaptation to the mold,- allowing the leather to lap at such serrations.

For some formations, and for light articles, the matrix may be lined with tin-foil instead of leather, which is to be rubbed or burnished into all indentations in the mold; the object of either the leather or foil being simply to obtain the contour of the figure in a material that will not adhere to the matrix by reason of the subsequent treatment.

After the matrix is thus lined, I take eanvas, carpeting, or other suitable woven or felted fabric, cut into sections or gored, as oocasion may require, to make it conform as nearly as possible to the shape of the matrix. This'fabric is then saturated with glue, or its equivalent, and rubbed or pressed into the cavity, so as to adhere closely to the leather or foil, and conform as nearly as possible to the contour of the mold, for the purpose of stiffening and strengthening such leather or foil, which, when the backing is sufficiently dry and hard, may be removed from the matrix, and the several sections of the entire hollow form may then be fitted together and secured in position by strips of canvas glued on the inside over the dividing lines.

The structure thus formed is then to be finished on its outer surface with a mixture of glue, whiting, and varnish, as described in my application marked A, with or without the solution of shellac with zinc-white, as described in application B, according to the purpose for which it is designed or it may be treated with marble-dust, as described in application 0.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a head constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same.

A represents the leather or foil portion; B, the woven-fabric lining, and G the composition or finishing coat on the exterior.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Hollow dummy or doll heads, figures, or parts of figures, formed in molds by first lining the matrix or intaglio mold 'with leather, foil, or other like material, and subsequently stiffening it with a lining of woven or felted fabric saturated with glue, or its equivalent, and finished on the exterior, substantially as described.
