n UNITED STATES iPATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. ATWOO'D, 0F MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIG-NOR TO FREEMAN BRICK CLEANING MACHINE COMPANY, OIF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
Application filed May 8,
To all 'wh-0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T.ATWooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, in the county of Middlesex kand State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brick-Cleaning Machines, of which the following isa specification. z
The present invention relates to machines lofor cleaningused brick by removing fragments of mortor adhering to the sides of the brick and reducing the surfaces of the brick to approximate planes, and to` approximate parallelism withone anotheras to opposite faces of the brick. More articularly. itis an improvement in machines. of vthe `,type shown inthe patent to James F. Freeman No. 1,033,573 dated July 23,1912. j
The principal object ofy the invention yis to provide a cleanin Ahead of improved construction enabling t e individual ycutters to be more readily assembled with the head, in staggered relation with each kother and'V to be removed and replaced when broken, without the necessity ofremoving the cutter head from itsshaft. j. v Y. i
The preferred construction of the present` improvements isshown in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specilication.
In the drawingsf# Figure l is aface view of va cutter-carrying head or cleaning head embodying the invention, with a part of lthe cover plate broken away. n
1 Figure 2 -is anend or edge `view ofsuch head shown'partly in elevation and partly in radial section.
Figures 3 and 4j are detail cross sectional 40 views taken on line 3-I-3 and on line Ll-4, respectively, of Figure 2. j V j l .Figure 5 is a'perspective .view ofone of vthe cutter units showny by the preceding The machine as a whole may comprise a frame vror chassis of any suitable construction mounted on wheels, as shown jby `the Freeman patent above mentioned.'v
A,motor of any: suitable character,.as an 5o internal combustion engine, an Y electric motor, or one of any other sort, may be employed `to drive the" cleaning head hereinafter described, the motor being mounted` von the frame and suitablyfconnected with af 12b, preferably annular flanges concentric terposed disk or washer 24, as shown by BRICK-CLEANING- MACHINE.
192e.A serial No. 637,498.
driving shaft to which the carrying member 4`of the cleaninV head hereinafter described is secured, said shaft being journaled in ybearings above and supported by the frame.
My new form of cleaning head comprises acircular carrying member including a cen- 00 from and surrounding the hub, and spaced apart o uter'and inner projections l2a and with the hub and projecting outward from the body portion, said projectionsy being spaced apart to permit the interposition be` tween them of the radially arranged shafts hereinafter described. y
The outer projection l2a is provided with outer notches 13, and the inner projection f l2b is provided Withfinner notches 13a. Said notches have open sides onrthe outer faces of the projections, and closed ends forming abutments for the opposite ends of shafts 20. The open sides of the notches permit the` insertion of the shafts laterally into the notches, and the closed ends of thenotches prevent endwise movement of the inserted shafts. The outerl rejections are made sufficiently thick an strong to support the shafts against the tendency of centrifugal force to displace them endwise. when n the head is rotated at a high speed.
The shafts 2O extend radially, or .approxi-V mately so, fromV the inner to the outer notches. On the shafts 320 f are loosely mounted cutting tools or units Vwhich include serrated or star wheels, adapted to remove mortor from a brick by rolling in contact therewith, as described byfthey Freeman patent. I prefer to make each unit by assembling two star wheels 23 23, and an in- Figure 5. These wheels and washer, when moved to place on a shaft 20, are adapted to rotate freely on the shaft. i j
Each shaft is provided with a plurality of cutter units, these being spaced' apart on y10o the shaft, as hereinafter described, l
VMy improved cleaning headk comprises also confining means separably mounted von the carrying member, and including elements adapted to confine. the shaft ends in Vthe grooves 13 and 13a, and elementsvadapted to confine the cutter units spaced apart from each other on the shafts.` f
In the embodiment of the invention here shown, said elements are parts ofan annular plate 25, seated on the outer faces of the projections 12a and 13, and separably secured to the projections by means such as screws 28.` 'I he outermarginal portion a of the plate constitutes a cover for the open sides of the outer notches 13. .The inner marginal portion 25D of the plate constitutes a cover for the ouen sides of the inner notches IS. Sai coi/'ers extend across thel portions of the shafts 20 inserted in the notches and revent lateralfdisplacement or removal of the shafts.
vrIhe elements 'which confinel the cutter units spaced apart on the shafts 2-0 are spacers 26, provided in this instance, by forming spaced apart openings or slots 27 in the plate 25, through which portions of the cutter units project, the spacers 26 be in@ interposed between adjacent units.
i he spacers are adapted and arrangedv to maintain the cutter units on any Vshaft 20, in staggered relation to theunits on anadjacent shaft, as shown by Figure l, so that the units ofeach shaft form grooves in a mortar facing which are between the grooves formed by the units of an adjacent shaft. Y
The shafts 20 are relatively long and extend frompoints near the hub to points near ltheperiphery of the carryingmember. Between these shaftsare otherV shafts 2l, which are similar, but shorter, and occupy the spaces between adjacent shafts 20, near the periphery of the carrying member. The outer ends .of the shafts 21 are contained in some of the notches 13, in the outer projections 20, and the inner ends are contained in notches 13b, similar to the inner notches 13a and` formed in bearing lugs 22, forme-dionl the body portion l2 ofthe carrying member.
lugs or chairs 22a ma 1 be rovided to oovtu pose the bending stress to which the longer shafts 2O are subjected.
.t'fwill be seen that when the cover elements 25L and`25l are removed, the shafts and theV cutter units strung thereon, may
be installed in and removed from the carrying member, 1 without withdrawing 'the shafts from the cutter units, and that when the shafts are installed, they are adequately supported by the outer projection of the carrying member against endwise displace- .ment due tocentrifugal force,V
`The inclusion of the cover elements A25 and' 25a, in a single. plate 25, which` also includes the spacers 26.7accordin`g to the preferred embodiment of the invention, enables the plate to constitute the soleV means for separably conliningfthecutter-holding shafts' in the notchesq and for maintaining the proper spacing'betw'een the'cutter units, said elements beingquickly removable and attach- Intermediate notchedA able to permit the removal of worn out and broken cutters and the substitutionof others therefor.
The ends of the cutter-bearing shafts constitute shoulders arranged to cooperatelwith those portions of the projections4 on, the carrying member which form the closed egids of the. notches.
The plate 25 may be made in a number of segments,` each separately secured by its own attaching screws or the like and de tachable separately from the others, as clearly shownV inl Figure 2 3. Thus when replacement of asingl'e cutter, or of a few adjacent cutters, etc., is all that is -needed by way of repair, only that part'of the plate which overlies the damaged' or useless parts need be removed, and, the other cutters and shafts may remain undisturbed.
Even in the first assemblage it is much easier to applyla plate consisting of a number of separatesegmentsr than 'a cover of one piece whichoverlies the whole head, and withthe openings inwhich all of the cutter units must beregistered at the same time.
Evidently in place of providing the notches for theV shafts 20 in continuous' projections 12l andV 12b, discontinuous notched lugs like the lugs 22Y'may be used, ,adequate means being provided'v Vfor securing the' Vcleaning head comprising a circular carrying member includlng a central' hub atta`chable to a driving shaft, a bodyT portion eX- tending outward "from and surrounding the hub` and spaced apart inner and outerprojections arranged concentric with the hub andprojecting outward from the body portion, the projections being'provided with louter and'inner notches having open sides and closed ends, radially arranged shafts inserted at ltheir endsv in the open sides of said notches andfconfined against endwise movement by the closed ends `V thereof, rotatable cutter units loosely mounted Von said shafts,'there being a plurality of unitsron each shaft, and confining means separably mounted on the carrying member and in- @lading @ove-fs @losing the @per Siders ofthe notches, to prevent Vlateraloutward movement of thejshafts', and spacers interposed between the cutter" units, to maintain the same spaced-apart on the'shafts, said spacers being adapted and arrangedv to maintain the units von'any'shaft in staggered relation to the units onv an adjacent shaft. Q
2. In a brick cleaning machine, a cleaning head comprising a disk-like body with spaced apart projections from one side thereof having shaft bearing notches, radially arranged shafts located in said notches and having shoulders arranged to cooperate with said projections to limit end- Wise displacement of the shafts, a cover overlying said projections and being detachably fastened to said bodjT so as to retain the shafts in place, and rotatable cutter units loosely mounted on the shafts, the cover having openings in parallel alinement With the several shafts through which said cutters project.
3. In a brick cleaning machine, a cleaning head comprising a disk-like body With spaced apart projections from oneside thereof having shaft bearingnotches, radially arranged shafts located in said notches and having .shoulders arranged y to cooperate With said projections to limit endvvise displacement of the shafts, a cover overlying 'said projections and being detachably fastened to said body so as to retain the shafts in place, and rotatable cutter units looselymounted on the shafts, said cover having openings in parallel alinement with the several shafts through Which said cutters project and being made of a plurality of segments each independent of the others and independently and detachably secured to the body of the head.
In testimony whereof 'l have aiixed my signature. i
