Description
C. H. WILLIAMS.
Car-Coupling Pins.
lUNITEE STATES PATENT ()EEIGEo CHARLES E. WILLIAMS, oE CLEVELAND, oIIIo.
IMPROVEMENT iN CAR-COUPLlNG PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. IQSLSQI, dated April 14, 1874; application led February 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concer-n:-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. WILLIAMS, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Oar-Coupling Pins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters of reference marked there on, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a Side view of a car-coupling pin made from a round bar of iron. Fig. 2 is a side view of a car-coupling pin made from 'a hat bar of iron. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of Fig. 2.
My present invention is a new article of manufacture, and consists in developing on a round or flat bar of merchantable iron a solid collar, and leaving an elevation or sufficient stock above said collar for a handle, and which provides a marketable railroad-carcoupling pin, and one which, for many purposes, is as useful as a nished pin.
The construction and operation of my' invention are as follows: In the accompanying drawing, A is the pin; B, the Solid collar developed thereon, and which is of uniform dimensions throughout; and G, the elevation or Stock that is left above the collar for a handle. By reference to my patents of July 15, 1873,
numbered, respectively, 140,980, and 140,981, it will be seen that this pin is produced at the first stage of the process of forming the 1inished pin which the system of dies described therein produces 5 or is such a pin as is made from the round or at bar of Inerchantable iron through the action of a single set of dies. The dies with which I propose to form this pin are fully described and claimed in my former patents, and, therefore, are not referred to here. Nor do I wish to limit myself necessarily to their use, as the pin itself is a new article of manufacture. The pin A may be pointed, as shown at D, through pressure-dies or any other convenient means.
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
As a new article of manufacture a machinemade car-coupling pin, A, having a solid collar, B, a projection above the same for a handle, and formed from an ordinaryv round or flat bar of nicrchantable iron, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specitication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. H. WILLIAMS.
