'vented new and useful lmprovements in lndex Devices. of which tbe following is e speoiiiestion. Y
This invention reeltes .to index devices oi tbe so-ealled visible index type, 'and more particularly to a. oord holder for use in that form of suoli indes` in which e series of snb-` stentielly let card liolders are errsnged in overlapping relation in e siiiteble freine, suoli holders being .roi/ideal with suitable Ineens on their iree ec ges :for removably sup porting insoribed Cards. W'liile deviees of tliis character heretofore constructed ere :found to be highly satis Lieto-ry in .most ceses and permit the ready inspection and. indexe. ing of the faces of tlie cards mounted in the respective lioldeiis, it is neeessery, ii itbe desired for any reason to gein senese to the rear side oie cord, either for inspection oi for making' entries thereon, to entirely remove the Gerd from tbe holder or else to iiex the card outwardly from the bolder snileiently to expose its rear surface. Either of tlie above modes of exposing the beek side of tbe card is obviously undesirable in the use of indexes of this typo wherein facility in entering on, or obtaining .flats from the cards, es Well es accuracy of indexing,-
sre ell importent. An object of the present invention is to provide e bolder of the class described in which both surfaces o e ofi-rd mounted therein may be exposed to View Without necessitating the removal of the Gerd 'from its bolder or the flexing of the Gerd.
@ne inode of :ittaininpa this ect consists in providing.; suoli e holder with. o. wird-sup" portiin, and gripping member adjacent tbe free edge of the bolder, suoli ineniber being vhinged to the main vbody of the bolder whereby it Inoy'optionally form e substantial oontinuntion of seid mein body portion,'lying in ehe plane thereof, or may be swung refirwsrdly about itsvbinge perniittin1 r tbeeerd held thereby to swing forwardly ewey from the holder body toexpose the reni' fece of the Gerd. M f
t is desirable to melee tbe binge of sheet material, suoli as textile fabric, 'for eonneeting the card support to the body of tbe holder, in orden to provide e durable hinge 1921 Serial H0. *$6,729.
and et the seme time avoid undesirable ineerase in' thiolmess of the device. The hinge strip may be attached by e. suitable adhesive.
ln the accompanying drawings which illustrates e. preferred embodiment of the ii'iifentioint F l is s front elevati L of a. card holder containingtl'ie invention, tbe bolder being shown removed from the freine and supporting e card in position to exhibit the 'front fece thereof, parts being broken away Fig. 2 is e. cross section of the device oi Fig. l on tlie line a-b thereof, the device being sliown however, in position or es kibitzing tlie rear surface oi the card; and
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are fragmentary cross seotions on tlie line cmd, i illustratingr various positions of the ports and tlie inode of inserting :and bolder.
l is the body portion of tbe holder, mede gii'feierebly oi" sheet materiel, such for example es cardboard or the like. The body may be provided with laterally extending esi-*s 3*4, of Ausuel construction, whereby it may be retained in 'lle marginal channels nommonly providedin tlie supporting frame, end with a. second pair of eers 5-6 serving to overlie the elimmol-forming flanges `on the iront face o1" the infime. AThe body portion l may also have tabs 7-8 struck up therefrom for engagement with the next adjacent bolder .in the frame whereby properly to space suoli holders longitudinally of ipporting oord in the the freine in the 'usuel manner. Any otlier usuel or preferred means may be employed for supporting the holders in overlapped spaced relation in the freine.
9 and i0 ore flaps oi tongues preferably formed by striking no the material of the body, suoli deps or tongues being somewhat resilient and having iree lower edges il., l2, normally standing' out slightly from the front face of the bolder body l.
At tbe 'tree edge o' tbe body l is e cerdsupporting poolzet i3, hinged to .the holder body. 'This csrd-suppoiing pocket is preferably made of :i strip of transparent-7 resilient materiel suoli as slieet Celluloid. 'folded upon itselic to form iront end rear veils, l5 imd'lhlrespeotively. tine .ii-nr ifo-ld orwell 'il being hinged to elle ed t bolder body l by ineens o e lling .i oit tough delgi blefinateriol suoli te.. de fabric or the like. The hinge strip .may be attached by lli) means of cement, or in any suitable inanner, and is preferably secured to the rear side of the bod l at its margin and to the iront side ori t e rear fold i4; of the card su port, thus bein inside of the pocket.
W en thus connecte it will be observed thatv the part of the hinge fabric attached to the body 1 is' normally concealed from View and is also out of the way of the edge of the card insert, which might catch on the fabric if the latter were attached to the front of the body 1; also that the part of the fabricattached to the card support will have no tendency to peel ofi' when the support is swung to the positions shown in Figs.l 2 and Li, as might occur it the fabric were attached to the rear face of the support. The connecting part 19 of the hinge strip extends.
obliquely across the narrow space 17 between the adjacent edges of the holder body and the supporting pocket.
The front wall or :told of the cardfsup-I vortin ockct is wider than the rear wall P 2 P or told as shown at 20, and when the pocket is in normal position extends beyond and' hinge element-l thuscausing the overlapping portion 2O of the front wall of the card support to swing outwardl from the face of the ibody l leaving a V siaped space therebetween as indicated at 22. Such V shaped space serves es a guide for the lower edge 23 of a card 25. The card. is then pushed edgewise into the space 22 and downwardly into the pocket between the walls 14, l5, springing the front wall 15 outwardly and away from the rear wall as it moves therebetween. The card Support 13 with the card therein may now be swung forwardly until the rear Surface 26 of the card lies against the front face of the body portion of the holder.
The upper edge 24 of the card may now be sprung beneath the flaps or tongues 9, 10, which serve to retain the parts in position with the front face of the card 25 exposed to view.
If now it be desiredto obtain access to the rear face 26 of the card, it is simply neces sary to spring the edge 24 out from beneath the flaps 9, 10, whereupon the cardmay be swung forwardly, causing the support 13 to be swung rearwardly upon its hinge as indibody.
.the bo y.
insense cated in Fig. 2 until the rear face 2d of the card is brought to View in frbnt. The card in this position may be inspected, or entries may be made thereupon, 'without removing the saine from its support, the resilient walls or' which serve to grip the card with sut- -icient force to prevent it from accidentally dropping out. By'i'torming thecard sup ort of transparent material, such as eelluioi it is possible to place an indexing inscription directly upon the lower portion of the card,4 or u on a separate index slip, such inscription eing readily visible when the card ism position in the holder.V A
ln many cases it will be found satisfacto to omit` the retaining tongues 9, 10,' in whic. event the next adjacent overlapping card holder of the series will normally serve to hold the card 25 in place dat against` its card holder. l f Y I claim-z l i l. A card holder for indexes of the vcharacter described, comprising a body,I and a. cardsupporting pocket having front and rear walls, the' rear wall being hinged to one edge of the body and the front wall extend-- ing beyond and overlapping the edge of 2. A card holder 'for use in indexes of the visible type and constructed and arranged forv engagement with a supporting frame, eonlprisin a body, and card-supporting means ma e 'of a folded piece of sheet ma-A terial forming a pocket, 'one fold being hinged to one edge of the body by means of 'a hinge strip.
3. A card holder'for indexes of the character described, comprising a body, and cardesupporting means made of a folded piece of sheet material forming a pocket, one fold being hinged to one edge' of the body by means of a hinge strip and the other fold extendin beyond and orerlapping theedge of 4. Acard holder for lindexes of the character described, comprising a body of sheet material, a card-supportpf folded sheet material forming a pocket, and a exible, hinge strip secured to the rear side of the body at 'its margin and to the `ront side of the rear fold of the card support.'
5. A card holder for indexes of the character described, comprising a body of sheet material, a card support of sheet vmaterial 'forming' a transparent resilient pocket, and
a hinge strip of textile fabric attached to` one edge of the pocket and to the free edge of the body, whereby the pocket may be swung about the free edge of the body as an axis.
