To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALFRED O. Lun, a citi,- Zen ot' the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented certain neuT and useful Improvements in Cable Holders, of which the'following is a specification.` i
rl`his invention relates to a cable holder and has for its principal object ,to provide a device olf the above mentioned character which is adaptedto be lowered into the casing oi" an oil well torthe purpose Aof taking up the slack in the cable which is connected tothe walking beam.
another object of this 'invention is'to provide a cable holder of the above 'mentioned character, -whichgcan be easily and readily placed in operation and furthermore which does not necessitate the use of a. complicatedstructure for lthe purpose of taking up rtheslack in the cable which ris being lowered into the eil well. y
A still further object 4of "the invention is to provide a cable holder of ythe above mentioned 'charac-ter, which is -simple'in its construction, inexpensive in its manufae ture, `strong and durable. Y
Other objects and advantages ofthis in vention will become apparent duringy the cou-rse ol the following description.
ln the drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate 'like parts throughout the same.
Figure 1 `is a central vertical section ol: the invention, and
Figure 2 is a topV plan `view of the same.
In lthe drawings 4wherein for the purpose oli'illustration is shown the prefer-red em bodiment of my invention, the numerals 1 and 2 designate two hollow semi-cylindrical sections comprising- -iny cable `holder orfplug. These sections 1 and 2 are "hingedlyconl nectedto each other by suitable hinge mem-- bers 3 and are held in locked positionlby any suitable fastening means 4 as shown more clearly in Figure2ot the drawings, The `two hollow sections `1andi2`are provided at their upper ends with La cover 5 and at their bottom ends with a coverI '6 and formed in these covers `are centrally disposed openings 7 and '8 respectively.`
The purpose of these openingsl 7 and 8 is to allow a cable 19 which is being lowered into the oil casing to pass centrally through the plug. To rui'ther aid in centrally supper ing` ythe cable 9 inthe plug l provide v.suitable guidemembers 10 and r11. These guide membersy consist of .slida'ble pulleys Vwhich are adapted to slide within thel casings A12 and 13 which' are mounted on the inner walls oi tie sections l and 2zrespectively of the plug and to urther aid in vholding the pulleys 10 and 11 [in engage'- ment with the cable 9 I provide within the casings `12 and13 spring elements 14 and 15 respectively. These spring elements will thereby cause the pulleys ,10 and 11 to-engage Vthe cable at all times regardless oi' the movement of the cable in a sidewise direction. IThese guide members f1() and 11 are arranged on the top of the plug and yalso at the bottom thereof. However it -is only necessary to describe one set of these as the other set is exactly the same.
Clamping Vmembers'l and 17 are associated with fthe sections 1 and "2 or" the plugl in such a. manner so as vto be pivotally mounted on the inner walls of the sections 1 and 2 as'at 18 and 19. These' clamping members laud 17 are oppositely disposed with relation to :each other and consist rvof diverging serrated jaws and 21 for rthe Apurpose ot enabling the clamping'members to more easily and readily engage the cable line passing therebetween. "Extending upwardly from the clampingmernbersl and 17 and carried thereby Yare the lugs 22 and 23 and these lugs 22 'and `23 yare provided at their outer ends with pins 24 and/25 respectively. These pins 24 and 25 are" adapted to work in the slotted ends 26 and 27 respectively of across bar 28 for a purpose hereinafter to be fully described.
These cross bars 28 `extend across the the two sections 1L and 2 of the plug in such a manner as to operate over the clamping'members 16-and 17 simultaneously. The operating means consists of a rod 29 which is connected and carried by the cross bars 28 and extends upwardly within the plug and beyond the top ortion 5 thereof. As there are two sets o 4these clamping'members` 16 and 17 arranged within the plug, one `of the said sets-being arrangedin-:the top portion thereof and the other near the bottom, the cross Abars 28 will necessarily have to be provided in one instance :with a 'shorter rod 29 which enablesfthe lclairuping members 16 and 17 to be arranged adjacent the upper end of the plug to be operate-l whereas the other set of clamping members ico llO
16 and 17 adjacent the lower end of the plug has a cross bar 23 provided with the rod 30 whichextends upwardly through the plug and through the top side thereof so as `to allow the operator to Vcontrol the clamping members 16 and 17 adjacent the lower portion of the plug. These rods 29 and 30 have at their outwardly vextending portions, handles for easily operating the same.
To vfurther support the plug or cable holder within the oil well casing when in use, thesections 1 and 2 are provided with wedge members 31 and 32 respectively in their sidesV and near the center thereof for slidably engaging the walls of casing 33 wherein the plug l'is placed. These wedge members 31-and 32 are controlledI by means vof levers 34 and 35 respectively and these levers 34 and 35 extend upwardly in the sections 1 and 2 of the plug and beyond the top `portions 5 thereof so that the'same may be easily operated. To further support these rods 34 and 35 .suitable guide means 36 and 37 is associated or carried by the inner walls of the sections 1 and 2 respectively.
In use when the cable upon one end of which is attached the operating or working` tool, is lowered into the oil well casing, the sections 1 and 2 are uncoupled by means of releasing the hooks 4- and are adapted to enclose the cable in such a manner that the guide members 10 and11 and the clamping members 1G and 17 will respectively engage the cable 9. After the same is in position the plug is then lowered into the casing a suitable distance so as to enable the operator to control the clamping members-16 and 17. The operator then operating the l levers 34: and 35 causes the wedge members 31 and 32 to engagey the casing 33 of the oil well and thereby securely hold the plug in the casing. As theV table 9 is being lowered into the oil well casing the clamping members 16 and 17 will have their serrated jaws 2O and 21 at all times engaging the cable 9 and will have a tendency to grip the cable 9 in such a manner as to prevent the sudden and quick pull on the cable and furthermore will grip the cable tightly. The guide members 10 and 11 will have their Vpulleys engaging Vthe cable 9 so as to allow the Vsame to pass easily through the plug 1 without any danger of rubbing against the side walls of the apertured portion formed in the casing. Whenever it is necessary to release the clamping members 16 and 17 from engagement with the cable 9 so as to allow the cable 9 to be further let down within the oil well casing the operator pulls upwardly upon the rods 29 and 30 thereby causing the pins 2,4 and 25 carried by the upstanding ' lugs 22 and 23 on the clamping means to slidably operate within the cross bar 28 which isV connected to the rods 29 and 30 and further pull upwardly upon the clamping members 16 and 17'to disengage the clamping jaws 20 and 21 thereof from engagement with the cable V9. As each of these cross bars 28 is connected to one pair of the Vclamping members 16 and 17 the operation is'easily facilitated and furthermore positive in its action.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that an 'easy method and more useful .ma-nner has been described whereby in the lowering of av cable within the oil well casing any slack of the cable may be easily taken up. and also hold the cable in any desired position.
It is to be understood that. the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same, and that various changes in the same size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my Yinvention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l Y j V1.
