Chicago, in the county of Cook and Ytate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graph Charts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to charts. and particularly to charts so constructed that graphs for various purposes may readily be indicated thereon.

One of the objects of my invention is'the provision of a chart for this purpose of simplified and inexpensive construction, the foundation structure of which consists of alternately arranged, substantially parallelly extending rigid and iiexible portions, an indicating member being movably associated with each of the rigid portions, whereby the chart may be readily rolled or folded into compact form and stored away when not in use or easily transported from place to place as is often desirable when the chart is used by a person giving lectures in different communities. In its preferred fo-rm thefoundation structure of the chart consists of a sheet of flexible material, for` example, paper, to one side of which are secured spaced, substantially parallelly extending relatively rigid members, which members may be formedrof any suitable material, for example, heavy press-board or wood, the sheet of flexible material readily bending between the rigid members so that the, chart may be easily rolled or folded into compact form. A further object of my invention is the provision of a chart so constructed that any desired designation or indicia may be displayed thereon in substantial alignment with the' respective indicating members of the chart, the foundation structure of the chart preferably being formed so as to provide a plurality of pockets adaptedto receive display cards bearing the desired designations or indicia which display cards, when properly inserted in the pockets, are in substantial alignment with the respective indicating members.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings, theV foundation structure of thechart comprises a sheet l0 which may be ofany suitable material, for' example, medium weight manilapaper, tothe back of which a plurality of spaced.,A substantially parallelly extending stripsll are secured. The strips 11 may be made yof any ksuitable material, for example, press-board or ,wood, they being relatively rigidwith respect to the sheet 10. The strips may be secured to the back of the sheet 10 in any desired `manner, for example, by applying glue to the face `sides of the respective strips and pressing them against the back of the sheet; and, if it is desired to reinforce the structure furn ther, a strip 12 of cloth or paper maybe glued. to each of the ystrips 11,- the strips 12 being somewhat wider than the strips 11 and the marginal projecting portions thereof being `glued to thebacl of the sheet 10.

In the form of my invention illustrated, a pair of indicating members is provided for each of the rigid strips 11, the indicating members being in the form of

13 and 14, extending longitudinally around the strips 11. The ends of the .reinforcing strips 11 may be formed so as to provide recesses 15 in each end, which recesses register with slots lprovided in sheet 10, see Figs.

Y The recesses 15 are deep enough and the endless -tapes are stretched taut enough to insure the tapes being at all times in operative position on the strips 11. The recesses 15 are not essential as the slots 16 in the sheet 1.0 will sufficeto maintain the tapes in operative position on the strips 11.

That portion of the sheet 10 over which the tapes extend is preferably provided with -columnar rulings 17 extending substantially Vat right angles to the tapes. A scale 18 is arranged onthe vfoundation structure lof the chart in association with the columnar rulH ings 17, the preferred arrangement being to form the .sheet 1() so as to provide a pocket 19 extending substantially parallel with the endless'tapes in which a display card 20 may be inserted. the display card bearing the desired scale 18.

The foundation structure may also be formed with a pocket 21 extending substantially parallel with the pocket 19 in which display cards 22 may be inserted, these cards bearing any desired indicia or designation, for example, the subject matter and the period of time under consideration.

The foundation structurev is also prefer ably arranged so thatY designations or indicia may be displayed substantially in alignment withv the respective pairs of tapes, the Vpreferred arrangementbeing to construct the foundation structure with a plurality of pockets 23 in which display cards 24 bearing thedesired designations or indicia may be inserted, the pockets 23 being so positioned that when 'the display cards are prope'rly inserted therein, the respective display cards are in substantial alignment with. the respective Apairs of tapes.

; Each tape comprises two portions which are distinctively' colored `relative to each other, for example, the portions 13a of the tape 13 may be white while the portion 13b of said tape maybe green, the meeting ends ofthe two distinctive colored portions on the face side' ofthe chart being fastened together and left to project sufficiently beyond the face ofthe chart to provide a grip portienl? whereby the tape'may be readily shifted longitudinally relative to the rigid strips 11. Theportion 14.a of the tape 14 may be white and the portion 14b thereof may be blue, the meeting edges thereof on the face side of the chart being united so as to provide a grip portion 14.

The chart is preferably constructed so that it may be suspended from a hook on the wall and to that end horizontally extending strips 25 may be attached to the top and bottom edges of the foundation structure7 and the upper strip may be provided with screw eyes 26' for fastening aV suspension cord 2. The vertical edges of the foundation structure may be taped with cloth strips to reinforce the same if desired.

usedwill be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the chart being arranged, for the purpose of illustration, to show vgraphically the amount of coal produced in certain States for 'the year 1920 as comparedV with the year 1910, the scale inserted in the pocket 19 being so arranged that each vertical columnar ruling on the sheet 10 represents a million tons and cards bearing the names of the principal coal producing States being inserted in the respective pockets By reference to a suitable tablel of statistics the operator may readily adjust the upper tape of each pair to bring the respective grip portions 13 at theproper position with reference to the scale 18 so that the quantity of coal produced in each State for the year 1910 may be readily ascertained by noting the respective positions of the grip portions 18 or the length of the respective green portions of the upper tapes.v In a like manner the operator may readily adjust the lower tape of each pair to `bring the respectivegrip portions 14c into proper position with reference to the scale whereby the amount of coal produced in the-same States for the year 1920 may be readily ascertained by noting the respective positions of the grip portions 14c or the length of the respective blue portions of the lower tapes.v

The usesto which a chart of this type may be put are almost innumerable, for example, it may be used to display the returns of an election, particularly the returns of one election as compared with those of another; or, it maybe use dby a salesmanager to keep tab of the amount of sales made by one salesman With respect to the sales made by other salesmen for any given period of time, or for a given period of time as compared with the sales during another period of time; or, it may be used to shovi7 the production of a given commodity in various districts or States for a given period of time as compared with another period of time as illustrated in Fig. l, or the relative values of commodities produced in a given district for a given period of time as compared With another period ofvtime, etc.

I do not intend to limit my invention to L the details of construction shown and described except only in so far as certain of the appended claims are specifically so limited, as it will be obvious that modifications may be made Without departing from the principles of the invention.

I claim: f

l. A chart of the class described comprising a foundation structure consisting of alternately disposed substantially parallelly extending rigid and flexible portions, so constructed and arranged that the chart may be brought into compact form, and an indicating member movably associated With each of said rigid portions, for the purpose specified.

2. A chart ofthe class described comprising a foundation structure consisting of alternately arranged substantially parallelly extending rigid and flexible portions, and an endless tape extending longitudinally around each of said rigid portions, said tapes having distinctive portions and vbeing movable relatively to said rigid portions, respectively, for the purpose specified.

3. A chart of the class described comprising a foundation structure adapted to be brought into compact form and consisting of a sheet of flexible material to one side of which are secured spaced, substantially parallelly extending relatively rigid members, and an indicating member movably associated With each of said rigid members, for the purpose specified.

4. A chart of the class described comprising a foundation structure adapted to be brought into compact form and consistprising a foundation structure adapted to be brought into compact form and consisting of a sheet of flexible material to one side of Which are secured spaced, substantially parallelly extending relatively rigid members, and an indicating member movably associated with each of' said rigid members, said structure having a pair of pockets arranged substantially parallel with said rigid members, one of said pockets being adapted to receive cards bearing display matter and the others adapted to receive a card bearing a scale, said structure also having pockets arranged in substantial alignment With said respective indicating members and adapted to receive cards bearing display matter, for the purpose specified.

6. A chart of the class described comprising a foundation structure consisting of a ysheet of flexible material to oneside of which are secured spaced, substantiallyl parallelly extending relatively rigid members, and a plurality of endless tapes extending longitudinally around each of said rigid eoy members, said tapes having distinctive porn ktions and being movable relatively to said rigid members, respectively, said structure having a pair of pockets arranged substantially parallel with said rigid members, `one of said pockets being adapted to receive cards bearing display matter and the other adapted to receive a card bearing a scale, said structure also having pockets arranged in substantial alignment with said respective indicating members and adapted to receive cards bearing display matter, for the purpose specified. y'
