UNITED STATES mLLlAMlREDENBAfiGEfi, OFCEN'IER POINT, INDIANA.
SCRAPER.
Application filed September 6, 1921. Serial No. 498,754.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIA Hanan-- BARGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Center Point, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This inventioncomprehends the provision of a drag line dirt scraper, embodying amongst other features, a receptacle provided with a sliding bottom, which normally occupies a position to support the contents of the receptacle when the latter is moved in one direction, and adapted to deposit the contents of the receptacle at a suitable location when a pull is exerted upon thebot tom in an opposite direction.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the scraper forming the subject matterof the invention.
Figure 2 is a front end elevation.
Figure 3 is a top plan View.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 41 of Figure 3, showing the normal position of the sliding bottom.
Figure 5 is a similar view, showing the adjusted position of the sliding bottom.
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 66 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates the receptacle forming part of the scraper, the receptacle including'a frame 10 which is covered by any suitable material 11. The spaced parallel side members of the frame extend an appreciable distance beyondthe rear wall 12 of the receptacle for a purpose to be presently described. These side members are longitudinally slotted as at 13 and receive the adjacent edges of the bottom 14 of the receptacle, which allows the bottom to slide longitudinally of the side members in a manner to be presently set bracing elements 15 which connect the terminals of the side members with the adjacent end'wall of the receptacle. A draw 'chain'16 isarranged'atthe "fr'ont end ofthe scraper and has its free ends connected to the adjacent end of the bottom, while a simllar chain 17 is arranged at the rear of the receptacle and has its free end secured to the opposite end of the bottom.
In practice, the scraper is dragged along the groundor surface, and the material collected by the receptacle is supported upon the bottom 14, inasmuch as the bottom occupies the position illustrated in Figure 1 when the scraper is being moved forwardly. When it is desired to discharge the contents of the receptacle, this may be accomplished without lifting or tilting the receptacle by exerting a pull upon thechain 17, which slides the bottom through the slots 13 until i it occupies a position illustrated in Figure 5. It is of course understood that the bottom in this instance, moves independently of the receptacle, so that its contents thereof can be deposited upon the ground or surface in a quick and easy manner and at any desired location. x i
.While it is believed that from the fore I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall, within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is ,1. A road scraper comprising a frame having spaced parallel sides, a cross member connecting the sides at one end thereof, uprights rising from the sides adjacent the opposed end thereof, said sides being longitudinally slotted, a receptacle includin side walls and one end wall, the receptacle eing open at its other end, said receptacle being supported by the frame as an entirety with the lower edges of said walls arranged above the said slot, a bottom for the receptacle, said bottom being arranged to slide in said slots, and said side members of the frame projecting an appreciable distance beyond the closed end of the receptacle to form a support for said bottom when it is moved entirely from beneath the receptacle for the purpose specified.
2. A road scraper comprising a frame having opposed side members, each member including spaced superimposed sections, standards rising from the side members and connected with the bottom sections thereof, a receptacle supported by the standard and the uppermost sections of the respective side members of the frame, said receptacle being open at one end, a bottom for the receptacle, said bottom being arranged to slide between the sections of the opposed side members, said side members projecting an appreciable distance beyond 10 the closed endof the receptacle-to allow the bottom to be removed entirely from beneath ture.
