Description

L. P. GREEN.
' SCRAPER.'
APPL-ICATION FILEDJUNE 9. 192|.
.Patented Sept.. 26, 1922.
` EEsLrE EQ GREEN, or omesso', learners.
seEEEEE.
To all whom 42f/Jazzy concern:
Be it known thatl, LEsLiE P. GREEN, a
citizen of the United States, a'nd a 'resident` v,of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and
btate of Illinois, have invented certain new Aand useful Improvements in Scrapers, of
which the following is a specification.
`My invention relates to improvements in Scrapers especially adapted for use inexcavatingwork and has for its` object the improvement of an improved construction of this charac-ter which is simple of con struction and highly efficient in use; i Uther objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter vdescribed and claimed.
'The invention will be best understoodby -reference to --the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, c
Fig. B is a transverse section taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and showing the scraper as in act-ual operation.
Fig. 4 is a side view of a modified form of construction and,
Fig. 5 is a section taken online 5-5 of Fig. 4 and showing the scraper in position of use.
.The -preferred form of Aconstruction as illustrated in the drawings, comprises twol scraping members secured together inforwardly divergent relation to' eac-h` other, said scrapingmembers being substantially in contact and secured together at their rear ends and ldiverging forwardly there@ from. Each of said scraping members is preferably made of sheet steel and `comprises a substantially vertical upper. por"- tion 4 and an inwardly and downwardly in clined lowerportion 5 as indicated. Said scraper members are rigidly secured together at their rear ends where 'they are y provided "with a vertical lip or iange 6 as shown.
vhaving two perforations 7 for the reception of a clevis 8 to which "cable 9v is attached. At their lower edges` thescraper portions 5 are reinforced b'y wear 'plates 10 At their forward portions the scraping members are provided with forwardly extending vertical keel plates or guides 11 secured to the forward edges of portions 4 and also secured to the forward Fig. 1 is a perspective view of ascraper Eppneation'nled :riin'e' e, 1`ea1.fseiai Eo. Maleo.
upper vedgesof the 'portions' almglinesIv 12 as indicated. The forward edges of the" guide plates 11 are provided with a plurah'ty of openings 13 for the reception. of.
.,clevlses 14 for-'attachmentto the cables 15 as shown and cover portion 16 Ais arranged` across the upper portions of the sides 4 and provided with verticai vflanges 17 arranged against the inner sides of the members 4 and secured thereto lby means of bolts 18. The bolt holes for the bolts 18am-so arranged that the cover portion 16 may be removedand reversed in position as indicated in Fig. 3 and whereby the capacity of the scraper may be varied.
ln ruse the scraper is utilized by drawing the same in vone direction over the area to be excavated.v by means of the for- `ward cablesl 15. A'During such movement the scraping portions 5' will dig up the earth or other material and gather the same in the enclosure .between the scraping members. When this enclosure becomes sub-- stantially filled, the cover portion 16 will rest and ride upon the `material therein,
thus in effect, elevating the scraper from digging contactA and preventing any further digging.A For this purpose the covermember 16 should be of sufficient area and eX tent tocause this-riding action which will scraping membersfis substantially open at its-front and bottom, the contained material will be deposited at this point and vthe scraper is then returned ,for a new load. By removing the cover portion 16 and reversing the same 'in position, f the capacity of the scraper may be varied to the extent `of the d'epth of the flanges 17. The keel or guide plates' 11 serve to maintain the travel of the scraper in ya substantially straight forward direction preventing side swerving, stiften the construction, and also tend to hold the load or charge therein during forward travel. i p
In 'the' modified form of construction illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the scraping titi members were made fiat and are arranged to slope inwardly and downwardly from their ytops to their bottoms.
i/Vhilev l have illustrated and described the preferredl forms ot construction for can rying my invention into eiect, these are capableoiE variation and modification without departing fromthe spirit of the invention.' l, therefore, do not wish to be lim- Having described my invention, what `l' claim as new anddesire to'secure by Letters Patent is:
