To all-whom it may concern:

Be'it known that KAzUn AKASHI, asubject ofthe Emperor of Japan, residing at No. 2 Shichikencho, Asakusa-lzu, Tokyo, Japan, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing Pen or Pencil Holders (for which I have filedan application in' Japan September 22, 1919), of which the following is a specification. v

The present invention comprehends generally'improvements inthat class of inventions known as stationery and "more particularly relates to an improved pen or pencil holder especially adapted for mechanr cal drafting purposes. 1 1 It is the principal aim and object of the invention to provide a device of the above character wherein improved means is employed for detachably fastening the two elements which are adapted to carry the marking material together, the means including a tongue and opening connection and a fastener, the latter normally serving to hold the marking material carrying members in operative relation but capable of beingloossued to. permit of disengagement of the tongue and the consequent swinging of the members so that they may be elfectively cleaned:,-without being entirely disconnected from eachother. In order that the members may be releasably clamped in operative relation and partly disconnected for cleaning purposes, suitable fastening means is employed to coact With the tongue and opening connection and in reducing this feature of the invention topractice a fastening element 6 in the form of a threaded bolt has its inner end anchored in the member 2 medially between the spacing block and the scribing end and in a manner that the shank of the bolt projects substantially at right angles from the inner surface. The member 1 is provided with an opening 7 of a diameter larger than the diameter of the bolt for engagement over the bolt while the elongated end of the bolt is adjustably engaged by a suitable clamping element such as a nut 8. WVhen the opening 5 is arranged over the tongue and the opening 7 raised over the bolt 6 and the nut 8 substantially tightened the parts are held in operative relation. When however it is desired to partially disconnect themembers 1 and 2 the nut 8 is loosened to permit of a disengagement of the opening 5 from the tongue 1 this being due to the slightly increased diameter of the opening 7 permitting of a relative longitudinal movement of the members 1 and 2. Subsequently the members may be swung to assume the position such as indicated in Fig. 4: in order that they may be readily cleaned and sharpened.

Y In Figs. 5 and 6 the invention is implied to a pencil holder, the members 1 and 2 having their forward marking material carrying end portions ofiset inwardly toward each other and curved transversely as indicated at 2 so as to accommodate a piece of lead, The connections between the membersl" and 2 being the same as shown for connecting the members 1 and 2 together, the parts bearing similar reference numerals with the exception that they are primed.

Asv intimated an improved handle has been employed for association with either of the arrangements shown in Figs. 1 and 5 in the present instance including an elongated body portion 9 the forward end of which isbifurcated at 10 so that the bifurcated portions are rendered resilient. These portionsare reduced near their outer ends to leave shoulders 11, the reduced bifurcated portions acting as jaws 12 for frictional engagement with the opposed surface of the web portion of the block 3 of either the pen or pencil holder. The handle is shown in engagement with the ink carrying members in Fig. 10. In this connection it is to be observed that the inner portions of the members 1, 1 and 2, 2' together with the block 3, 3 form a substantial head I-shaped in cross section. As intimated when the handle is engaged the inner surfaces of the jaws frictionally contact with the opposite side faces of the block 3, 3 while the upper and lower edges of the jaws contact with the opposed inner faces 1 and 2' as apparent. It is to be observed that the jaws 12 are of a thickness that when engaged the outer faces thereof lie flushed with the side edges of the members 1, 1 and 2, 2

It is believed apparent in. view of the foregoing that the handle 9 is equally well adapted for receiving either the ink carrying members 1, 1 or the lead carrying members 2 and 2 and that a further detailed description of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise, it is also be ably and adjustably associated with the members and coacting with the first mentioned means to releasably hold theinembers in operative relation or permit of them being swung with respect to each other and without being disengaged from each other, wherein the members together with the engaging and spacing means therefor form a sub"- stantial head of I-shape in cross section, and a handle for detachable engagement with thehead including a body P01131011 the forward end of which is bifurcated to provide resilient jaws.

2. A drawing pen or pencil including a pair of marking material carrying members, means for releasably engaging and spacing the members, and clamping means detachably and adjustably associated with the members and coacting with the first men tioned means to releasably hold the members in operative relation or permit of them being swung with respect to each other and without being disengaged from each other, wherein the means for detachably engaging and spacing the members includes .a block anchored to the inner surface of one of the members and having its webfportion extending longitudinally from the inner edge thereof, a, tongue formed onthe outer edge of the web portion of the block and having its front and rear edges inclined towards the forward edge of the block, and v the other member being provided with an opening the ends of which are inclined correspondingly to the edges of the tongue so as to be engaged about the tongue and arranged in contact with the front edge of the Web portion.

A drawing pen or pencil including a pair of marking material carrying members, means for releasably engaging and spacing the members, and clamping means detachably and adjustably associated with the members and coacting with the first men tioned means to releasably hold the members in operative relation or permit of them being swung with respect to each other and without being disengaged from each other, wherein the means for releasably clamping the members includes a threaded bolt havin its inner end anchored to one of the mem ers,

the other member being provided with an 7 opening of a diameter greater than the diameter of the bolt, and a nut adjustably engaged with the projecting end of the bolt.

4. A drawing pen or pencil holder comprising a pair of marking material carrying members, a block anchored to the inner surface of one of the members and including a web portion projecting longitudinally from the inner edge of the said member, a tongue projecting from the outer edge of the web portion and havin its front and rear edges inclined towards the forward ends of the web portion, the other member being provided with a longitudinally arranged opening near its inner edge, the re-' spective end edges of which are inclined correspondingly to the inclined edges of the tongue so that the opening may be arranged about the tongue and the member arranged in contact with the web portion, the web portion acting to hold the members in spaced relation, a threaded bolt projecting from the member carrying the block, the member having the first opening being also provided with another opening of a diameter larger than the bolt, and a clamping member adjustably engaged with the bolt, substantially as and for the purposes specified. i

5. A device as defined by claim 4 wherein the inner portions ofthe members and the web form a substantial head of I-shape in cross section and a handle including a. body portion one end of whichis bifurcated to provide resilient portions, the inner faces of the resilient portions being reduced to leave shoulders and the outer reduced resilient portions acting as jaws for removable and frictional engagement with, the Web portion and between the members, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
