Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at B'ixby, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handle Fasteners, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to improvements in tool handle fasteners, particularly adapted for fastening tool heads, such as hammers, axes and picks upon their handles, the invention being characterized by its simplicity of construction and ease of application, the same embodying relatively few parts, and these so corelated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
ln the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is aside elevational view of my improved tool handle fastener applied.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is an. elevational view of the expansion screw employed in conjunction with the invention, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective of one of the elements comprising my invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 designates a hammer head, while 6 designates the handle thereof, it being understood that these elements comprise no part of the present invention, but are merely shown so as to more clearly disclose the application of my improved fastener.
My fastener, per se, embodies the provision of a pair of oppositely disposed blademembers 7, the inner edges of which are thickened, and out upon an arc as at 8, these arcuate portions being screw threaded, as more clearly shown. in Figure 4. The lower edges of each of the said blade members 7 are sharpened as at 9, for the purpose of permitting the blade members to be driven into the end of the handle 6, to a position as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

ed a bevelled set screw 10, the u per end of which is slotted as at 11, where y the said screw may be turned, through the instrumentality of a screw driver. The Wedge shaped blade members 7 are inserted in the handle 6 by placing the threaded edges of two of the said members together and by using a hammer upon the outer larger ends of the blade members and driving the smaller wedge-shaped ends of the members 7 into the end of the handle until the outer surfaces of the larger ends of the members 7 are flush with the end of the handle. The screw 10 is then inserted between the threaded edges of the members 7 and the screw is rotated whereby the coneshape of the screw will spread the members 7 with relation to each other and cause the sharp edges thereof to be forced into the material of the handle and whereby the end portion of the handle is spread in the eye of the tool head which is mounted upon the handle.
In view of the above description, it will at once be apparent that after the said pair of blade members 7 have been initially driven into the end of the handle 6, the said set screw 10 may be inserted between the screw threaded edges thereof and by screwing; up upon this set screw, the same will force the said blades 7 outwardly away from ach other, which will cause a cutting of the blades into the handle for consequently expanding the same within the tool 5 for maintaining the same upon the end of the handle.
Although I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understod that minor changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim aS new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
Means for fastening a tool head upon a handle comprising a pair of wedge members of substantially the same design and the same relative dimension, each of the members having a longitudinally disposed wedge shaped spine portion having its longitudinal edge transversely concaved and provided with thread grooves, each member also having a blade portion provided with upper and lower edges disposed at right angles to the length of the spine portion, the opposite side surfaces of the blade portion converging toward each other from the spine yond the ends of the spine portion, said sore engaging the threads of the spine portion and serving to spread the members lat erally whereby the edges at the outer portions of the blades are forced laterally into the material of the handle and the sharp edges at the eoncavities provided in the blades and the spine are forced into the materiel of the handle and serve to anehor the. wedges in the handle and between the sur faces of the eye of the tool head.
