My invention relates to that class of chimney cowls or caps which are intended to turn, in order to keep the opening for the escape of the smoke to the leeward, or on the side opposite that from which the wind blows. l\'ly invention consists in constructing the spindle in such a manner that the wear and tear caused by the revolution of the cap will not make it liable to bind on either side, and so prevent it from turning, and defeat the very object of the revolving cowl. v
In the drawings, A represents the chimney, into which the cowl is placed and securely `fastened and tightened by mortar. Upon thetop of the chimney A is a metallic plate, B, entirely covering the top of the chimney around the cap, and excluding the wet and wind. From the plate B drops a flange, b, exactly fitting the mouth of the chimney, whether it be round, oblong, or square, and holding the plate B firmly in place. From the inner edge of the plate B rises the cylindrical flange U, which completes and secures the joint around which the cap revolves. From one side of the liange C to the other, at the bottom, is a crbss piece, c, into the center ot' which is lirmly secured the spindle s, and, a short distance above the cross-piece c, is another cross-piece, c',
crossing the cylindrical iiange C atright angles, and which supports and braces the spindle s in an upright position. Fivoted upon the spindle s is the cap D. An inverted tube, e, is secured upon a rod, g, running through y the center of the upright portion of the cap D, which tube is' placed over the spindle s, its
bottoni resting upon the apex of the spindle.
The tube and rod are rmly xed in the top of the cap D, and the top of the rod g supports a vane rigidly secured thereto, by which the cap is assisted in keeping with the wind. The horizontal part of the cap D is made long enough to keep the sun and rain from entering the vertical portion of the cap. The cap is kept from rising by a ilange, o, upon its lower edge, which is kept down by dogs m, screwed upon the plate B.
The operation of my device is as follows: After securing the plate B, with its llanges b and C, and spindle s, rmly to the top of a chimney, the cap D is placed upon it, the invertedtube being placed over the spindle s, and the dogs m screwed down over the tlange o.
The new and useful advantages arising from it are, that the length of the tube and spindle will insure a steady and uniform motion to the cap, it not being liable to wear out of true, or bind upon the stationary parts of the device,
and thus become useless as a revolving cap;
and, secondly, thel shape of the cap, being a right-angled elbow of a pipe, is peculiarly adapted to prevent the rain and snow from entering the chimney, and also prevent the sun from shining in the chimney, which is said to materially lessen the draft; and, thirdly, the spindle upon the chimney, entering the inverted tube of the cap, prevents soot, dust, or other dirt from accumulating at the point ot' contact and inducing wear or rust. 1 Having fully described my invention, what I' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The plate B, flange C, and spindle s, in combination with the right-angled elbow-cap, tube e, rod g, and vane, substantially as described.
