To all whom t may concern.' l
Be it known that I, ADoLPH P. SoHonanars, a citizen of the United States, resident of Fort Smith, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Preheating Kilns for Zinc Smelters; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, 'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention has relation to pre-heating kilns for zinc smelters or furnaces,` having for an object to provide means for preheating the green retorts by the waste heat of the furnace. Another object is to effect a material saving in fuel. Other objects and advantages will appear.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a Zinc furnace of common type, wherein are the lire-clay retorts 2, the gaseous products of combustion from said furnace passing through two horizontal fines 3, 3, leading to and beneath the legs 4, 4, of the stack, and at the farther side of the latter passing through an upwardly inclined Hue 5 in a lateral wall of the kiln 6 and extending approximately the entire vlength of the kiln, a vertical baffle wall 7 also extending approximately the entire length of the kiln, serving to direct the hot gases upwardly towards the arched top 8 of the same, said hot gases being thereby given a downward course or whirl through the green retorts 2', located in vertical fashion upon the grate 10 of the kiln, said grate having circular bars or supports 11 of similar dimensions to and whereon rest the lower ends of said retorts, whereby the free passage of the hot gases through and between the retortsis facilitated in effecting a proper firing.
Below the grate 10 are parallel flues 12, closed at their outer ends at 13, and at their inner ends communicating with a flue 14:, common to all of the parallel flues, and at right angles thereto, and at its central portion communicating at 15 with a central vertical flue 16 located between the legs of the stack, and at its upper end at 17 communicating with the legs of the stack.
The flues 3, 3, have inclined top walls 18, below which are located lateral openings 19 tothe legs of the stack, said openings being respectively controlled by a valve or damper 20, adjustable to vary the draft and the proportion of hot gases that shall be directed through the kiln, and thereby in# directly to the stack.
The inclined passage or flue 5 leading to the kiln is also provided with a valve or damper, designated at 21, adjustable for the same reason, and for better control of the draft.
The arched top of the kiln is adapted to direct the. hot gases to the green retorts at the far side of the kiln, and the more direct pull of the stack will cause the retorts at the near side of the kiln to receive their proper porportion of said hot gases. The pull of the stack through the green retorts at the two ends of the kiln is equalized with the pull at the central portion of the kiln bythe use of the parallel flues 12, the central members of which have egress of the hot gases therefrom impeded by the constricted mouths 22 thereof.
The invention has been tried out in practice and found to be very efficient and to effect a material saving in fuel.
I claim 1. The combination with a zinc-furnace, of a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts and having a iiue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack in direct communication with said flue, the latter also having communication with said stack indirectly through said kiln.
2. The combination with a zinc furnace, 0f a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts, and having a flue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack in direct communication with said flue, the latter also having communication with said stack indirectly through the kiln, said kiln having means for equalizing the circulation ofthe hot gases therethrough.
3. The combination with a Zinc furnace,
of a kiln for pre-heating the green retortsV and having a branched fine leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack having two legs in direct communication with the branches of said iue, the latter also having communication with said legs indirectly through said kiln.
4. The combination with a zinc furnace, of a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts and having a branched flue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack having two legs in direct communication with the branches of said flue, the latter also having communication with said legs indirectly through the kiln, said kiln being adapted for equalizing the circulation of the hot gases therethrough.
5. The combination with a zincfurnace, of a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts and having a iiue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack in direct communication with said flue, the latter also having` communication with said stack indirectly through the kiln, said kiln having means for equalizing the circulation of the hot gases therethrough including an inclined entrance flue, a baffle, and an arched top.
6. The combination with a Zinc furnace, of a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts and having a flue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack indirect communication with said fine, the latter also having communication with said stack indirectly through said kiln, the-kiln having means for equalizing the circulation of theliot gases therethrough including base fines the y central of which have constricted exits, a flue at right angles to and common to said base tlues, and a central exit flue to the stack.
7. The combination vwith a zinc furnace, of a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts and having a Hue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack in direct communication with said flue, the latter also having communication with said stack indirectly through said kiln, .the kiln having means for equalizing the circulation of the hot gases therethrough including an` inclined'entrance flue, a baille. an arched top, base ilues the central of which have constricted exits, a flue at right angles and common to said base flues, and a central exit flue to the stack.
8. The combination with a zinc furnace, of a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts and having a branched flue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack having two legs in direct communication with the branches of said iiue, the latter also having communication with said legs indirectly through said kiln, the kiln having means for equalizing the circulation of the hot gases therethrough including an inclined entrance flue, a baffle, and an arched top.
9. The combination with a zinc furnace, of a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts and having a branched Hue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack having two legs in direct communication with the branches of said flue, the latter also having communication with said legs indirectly through said kiln, the kiln having means for equalizing the circulation of the hot gases therethrough including base fines the central of which have constricted exits, a Hue at right angles and common to Said base fines, and a central exit flue to the stack.
10. The combination with a zinc furnace, of a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts and having a branched flue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack having two legs in direct communication with the branches of said flue, the latter also having communication with said legs indirectly through said kiln, the kiln having means for equalizing the circulation of the hot gases therethrough including an inclined entrance flue, a baflie, an arched top, base flues the central of which have constricted exits, a flue at right angles and common to said base fines, and a central exit flue to the stack.
11. The combination with a zinc furnace,
of a kiln for pre-heating the green rctorts .r
and having a line leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack in communication with said flue directly, the latter also having communication with said stack indirectly through the kiln, said kiln having a grate adapted to facilitate the circulationof the hot gases including spaced circular bars conforming to and whereon rest the lower ends of the upright green retorts.

The combination with a zinc furnace, of a kiln for pre-heating the green retorts and having a branched flue leading thereto from said furnace, and a stack having two legs in direct communication with the branches of said flue, the latter also having communication with said legs indirectly through said kiln, the kiln having a grate adapted to facilitate the circulation of the hot gases including spaced circular bars conforming to and whereon rest the lower ends of the green retorts, the kiln having means for equalizing the circulation ofthe hot gases therethrough including an inclined entrance Hue, a batlie, an arched top, base fines the central of which have constricted exits. a fine at right angles and common to said hase fines, and. a cent-ral exit flue to the stack.
