Be it known that I, FronrNDo DALLA CoLET'rA, a citizen of Brazil, residing at Alfredo Chaves, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Acting Hydraulio Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as lwill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention `relates to improvements in semi rotary double-acting hydraulic pumps, in which the pistons are swung in arcs of circles through a limited angle on opposite sides of a common axis, and in which these pistons are provided with passages controlled by fiap valves, the operation of which valves is facilitated and expedited by weighted arms, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The invention provides a simple and eicient construction which is easily kept in order and requires afsmall amount of power to operate same, as well as other advantages that will be hereinafter more fully described. i
The pump maybe reciprocated either by a handle, or may be driven from the reciprocating part of` any suitable engine, as may be preferred. For convenience of villustration yI have shown the pump as pro vided with a handle for hand operation.
My invention will be more fully understood after reference to the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are indicated by similar reference symbols throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a front elevation of the pump with the valves in the neutral position.
Figure 2 shows a section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, andlooking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 shows the interior of the pump chamber with the front cover removed and at one end of the stroke, one of each set of valves being' shown as open and the other closed. j
Figure 4 shows the interior of the front cover as removed 'from thel pump.
Figure 5 is a detail view showing th removable block containing the admission passage and the admission valves 'pivoted thereto.
Figure 6 is a detail view of the vibrating frame carrying the pistons, with the weighted lever valves removed, and parts being broken away.
Figures 7 and 8 are detail views showing the oppositely disposed lever valves detached from the apparatus; and
Figure 9 shows a modified form of valve arrangement adapted to be mounted on the operating shaft.
The pump comprises a casing composed of two halves A and B, each preferably l provided l'with lugs a and b connected together by the bolts C. .The chamber A is provided with a journal bearing a for the operating shaft- D. The chamber B is provided with a gland B for the said operating shaftvwhich may be rocked either by a handle D', or in any other convenient way. The rear member of the casing A may be provided with suitable lugs a2 for securing the pump to any suitable frame work, not shown.
` The two members of the casing are each provided with an annular groove, semi-cir cular in cross section, which when put together form a hollow annular chamber E which is separated by the partition F from the central chamber F, which central chamber has yan opening f between the ends f and f2 of the partition F, as shown .most clearly in Fig. 3.
The casing is provided at its lower end with an inlet opening G, and at its upper end with an outlet opening Gr', the outlet opening being connected by the flange g to any suitable delivery pipe, not shown. The lower part of the casing is split to receive the stem t of the block H, provided with the inlet opening H", which opening branches in two directions 7L and h2 which are alternately closed by the flap valves I and I, which are pivoted to said blocks as at c' and z". This block H is provided with a flange` h3 for connecting same to a source of water supply, not shown.
In order to make a tight joint between the blockH and the lower wall of the partition F suitable packing J may be provided, as shown in Fig. 3. Secured on the operating shaft D I provide a frame for the pistons which, for convenience of construction, is
shown as composed of two radial arms K,
both fast on the shaft D, and carrying at their outer ends the pistons M and M which are in the form of short tubes m, surrounded with a packing of leather or other suitable material m. This packing iscupped as shown in Fig. y6 sol aste cause the piston heads to tighten on the up stroke and to move freely on the down stroke, thus makvinga tight joint, on the up stroke only.

The vibratory ,movement of the vrshaft D may be limited zby the radial arms K bring ing up against the ends f and f2, respec tively, on the partition F, shown most clearly in Fig. 3,.
.One of the members of the casing, as B, may .be provided With a priming hole b3 for the insertionof the liquid in priming the pump, VWhich may be closed by Va suitable plug O and may also be provided with a .drain opening b4 Which may be closed by the draining plug O. O. and O', lsuitable `faucet arrangements may be used for filling and emptying the pump, as desired.
The operation of the device is as follows:
Suppose the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. l, with looth the valves I and I closed, iill up the pump chamber with Water through the opening'b3, and then close the said opening; now if the shaft D be rocked to the right, as shown in Fig. l, the valve I will be opened by suction, and the valve I Will be closed by pressure. In the same Way the valves n will be closed by the pressure of the liquid on one side, and the suction on the other, and the valve n will be lifted by pressure of the Water beneath the same; the parts then being shown in the position indicated in Fig. 3, when the liquid is being sucked in past the valve I and is being delivered through the outlet G.
The tendency of each Weighted arm n* or a5, due to its'inertia, will be to cause the corresponding valve to close quickly on the up stroke of the piston and to open quickly on the down stroke ofthe piston, so that a high degree of Asuction is securedy when desired, and a quick flow of the escaping liquid on the delivery stroke of the pump is secured.
The result is that this automatic action of theweighted arms causes the pump to act atV-aV high degree of etiiciency, both in the suctionsecured andyin the liquid delivered. It will be obviousthat the pump is double i acting.; that is, it` deli-vers liquid and simul- Instead "of these plugsv taiieously sucks in fresh liquid at each vilbration of the operating shaft. Where there is only a short lift, the pump itself will create a sufficient vacuum to lift the Water, but Where there is a longer lift, the pump should be primed as stated.
Of course it is not Within the capacity of any suction pump to lift fresh water more than approximately thirty (30) feet, or even less in practice.
Instead of the construction and operation of valves hereinbefore described, an anchor valve arrangement may be used, such as that shown in Fig. 9. It will be obvious that instead of flap valves, as shown, any suitable formof valves, such 'as ball valves or the like, may be used, and I do not mean to vlimit the invention to any special, forni of valves, as other valves Well known in the art may be employed.
It will be obvious that various other modifications might be made in the herein delscribed construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts which could be used Without departing from the spirit of my invention; and I do not mean to limit the invention to such details except as particularly pointed out in the claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States is l; A double acting hydraulic pump comprising a casing provided with an annular chamber circular in cross section. and a central chamber with an annular rib cnt away throughout a segment of its upper portion separatingr the two chambers, the said casing being provided with an inlet openin and an outlet passage, a block provided wit T-shaped passages therein projecting through the inlet opening of the casing, the said block being provided with opposil'ely disposed check valves controlling the inlet passages therefrom, a shaft journaled traiisversely of said casing, a franic carried liv said shaft and provided with curved oppositely disposed arms, perforated pistons car ried by said arms adapted to fit in said annular chamber, valves carried by said pis tons and adapted to open upwards, and i f means for rocking said shaft in reverse directions.
2. A double acting hydraulic pump comprising a easing provided with an annular chamber circular in cross section, and a eenl tral chamber with an annular rib cut away throughout a segment of its upper portion separating the tivo chambers, the said casing being provided with' an inlet opening and an outlet passage, a block provided with T-shaped passages therein projecting through the inlet opening of the casing, the said block being provided with op'positely disposed flap valvesl controlling the inlet passages therefrom, a shaft journaled translll] versely of said easing, a frame Carried by said shaft and provided With curved oppositely disposed arms, perforated pistons carried by said arms adapted to fit in said annular chamber, liap valves carried by said pistons adapted to open upwards, and means for rocking said shaft in reverse directions.
3. A double acting hydraulic pump coniprising a easing provided with an annular chamber'eircular in cross section, and a central chamber with an annular rib cut avvay throughout a segment of its upper portion separating the two chambers, the said casing being provided With an inlet opening and an outlet passage, a block provided with T-shaped passages therein projecting through the inlet opening of the easing, the said block being provided with oppositely disposed check valves controlling the inlet passages therefrom, a shaft `iournaled trans versely of said curved oppositely disposed arms, perforated pistons carried by said arms adapted to fit in said annular chamber, oppositely disposed Weighted levers (pivoted to said pistons, valves carried by sai levers and adapted to open upwards, and means for rocking said shaft in reverse directions. i 4. A double acting hydraulic pump comprising a casing provided with an annular chamber circular in cross section, and a eentral chamber With an annular rib cut away throughout a segment of its upper portion separating the tivo chambers, the said casing being provided With an inlet opening and an outlet passage, a block provided with T-shaped passages therein projecting through the inlet opening` of the casing, the said block being provided With oppositely disposed flap valvescontrolling the inlet passages therefrom, a shaft journaled transversely of said casing, a frame carried by said shaft and provided with curved oppositely disposed arms, perforated pistons earried by said arms adapted to fit in said annular chamber, oppositely disposed Weighted levers pivoted to said pistons, iap valves carried by said levers and adapted to open upwards, and means for rocking said shaft in reverse directions.
