The jaws 11 and 15 are especially' designed for the purpose of grasping either large pieces of material or small flat material. such as slate or other unburned objects which it is desired to remove from the fire bed. The jaw 15 is therefore formed with ahbowejd portion 27 opposite the portion 11 of the jaw 10 and terminates in a concentric or circular gripping face 28 having comparatively broad area and being disposed opposite the gripping face 12 of the fixed jaw. This circular portion 28 1s also formed of angular cross sections, as clearly shown at 29 in Figure 4, so that it presents a sharp contacting edge to the material to be Y lifted.
In order to cooperate with the circular gripping portion, the gripping face 12 1s provided with tapering lugs 3U and 31, the former extending longitudinally of the face 12 and opposite one of the angular faces 29, while the lug 31 is disposed beneath `thecircular gripping face at its point of connection .with the jaw member. j
VIn the modified form of the invention j shown in Figure 2, the general -construction and arrangement of parts is similar to that before described, with the exception. that the fixed jaw 32 carries a circular grippin face 33 and is provided with a hand ho d 34C while the movable jaw member 35 is provided with a gripping face 36 similar to the fixed face 12 shown in Figure 1. The jaw 35 is pivoted at 37 to the` fixed` jaw and connectecl to a sliding handle 38 by a pivot- 39. The jaws are normally held in closed position by a spring 4() and the movable jaw provided with a hand hold 41 so that a similar action of the parts is securedto that before described, with the exception of the reverse position of the gripping faces.
The operation of the invention will be` apparent from the foregoing description and it will be seen that when the jaws are in closed position the parallel gripping faces form a comparatively thin tapering end whichcan be readily introduced into the fire b ed and used in a poker action for loosening or raising into accessible positions clinlrers which may adhere adjacent the grate bars. These parallel gripping `faces also provide means by which a thin or fiat object or piece of I material may be grasped and when fully opened thebowed portion of the jaws provides space to receive a large clinker or other pbject which it may be desired-to remove fromnthe fire bed.
Itipvill also be noted that when it is desiredto hold the jaws in open position as indicatedby dotted lines in igure 1, the han- ,t y'die-may be slid into proper position for that purpose and onehtandy of the. operator grasping the crossed portion of the fixed jaw and the hand hold of the sliding jaw is sufficient to manipulate the tool, leaving the other have been shown and described, it will'be understood that changes and alterations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:--
1. In a tong device, a relatively fixed jaw having a laterally deflected handle portion, a cooperating movable jaw pivoted thereon intermediate its ends, and a sliding handle portion pivoted to one end of the movable jaw and deflected laterally at itsfree end, said deflected portions being crossed to provide a bracing face for one hand of the operator when holding the jaws in open position.
2. In a tong device, a relatively fixed jaw having a handle portion and a bowed portion terminating in a flat gripping face, an opposite movable jaw pivoted upon said handle portion and having a bowed portion terminating in a flat gripping portion substantially parallel to the first mentioned gripping face, and a handle member extending from said movable jaw.
'3. In a tong device, a relatively fixed jaw having a handle portion and a bowed portion terminating in a gripping face,l an opposite movable jaw pivoted upon said handle portion and having a bowed face terminating in a gripping portion substantially parallel to the first mentioned gripping portion, a handle member extending from said movable jaw, a support carried by the, fixed handle member and provided with a guide for the movable handle, a spring surrounding said movable handle and bearing against said support, and an abutment upon the movable handle for one end of said spring.
4. In a tong device, a fixed jaw member, and a cooperating movable jaw member, one of said members having a ripping face of circular configuration and the o posite member having a straight ripping ace extended diametrically of te circular face.
5. In a tong device, relatively movable jaw members, one thereof having a substantially circular gripping face of an lar cross section` and the cooperating mem er having `a flat face provided with grippin lugs disposed to cooperate with the ang-u ar edge of the circular face.
6. In a tong device, a fixed jaw member provided with a hand hold at one end and slidin handle pivotally connected to Said a bowed and Het gripping face at its oppomove e jaw, the body portions of said hansite end, a cooperating jaw pvoted upon the dles being deflected in opposite directions in l0 rst mentioned jaw member and provided planes intersecting each other.
6 with a bowed portion and a gripping face In testimony whereof I eiix my signature.
adapted to lie substantially parallel to the cooperating face upon the fixed jaw, and a GUST N. CARLSON.
