Be it known that we, CHARLES P. MAcGoN- v IGAL and JOSEPH F. PUTNAM, citizens of the United States, and residents of Rochester,
5 in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to switches and more particularly to the type in which a switch part is provided movable automatically in one direction and held against movement in suclr direction by holding means controlled by an .electromagnet. An
object of this invention is to provide a construction of simple and compact form, which will be inexpensive to manufacture. A further object of 'the invention is to provide an overload switch or circuit breaker for use in connection with motors and having means by which an overload energized magnet may be prevented from actuating the holding means during the starting of the motor. Still another object of the 2 invention is to provide, in connection with a motor circuit, a switch for controlling said circuit, an overload energized magnet for effecting the opening of the circuit, and means operable. only after the circuit is closed by the switch for preventing the overload energized magnet from actuating the holding means. Another and still further obj ect of the invention is to provide a switch having a part movable automatically to o n the switch and also movable to a position while the switch is closed without opening the switch, there being also provided means for holding the switch part against movement to open position and an overload en- '40 ergized magnet for operating said holding while the switch is closed and the motor has reached normal rimnmg condition. Still another and further object of the invention is to provide a switch part held by a detent in closed position, this detent an overload energized magnet and provision being made whereby the freedom of the detent from the overload energized magnet may be insured when the mo tor has reached normal running coni dition. The invention further contemplates an improvement in aswitch whereb the latter is held in one position by a etent acted upon by a spring which also acts to move the switch part away from the detent after the switch part is freed by such detent.
To these and the other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be herein after described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

In the embodimentof the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 and diagrammatically in Fig. 6, 1 indicates the motor and 2 the source of energy, the motor being controlled by a switch which in this form embodies two contacts or terminals 3 and 4, one of which may be connected b a conductor 5 to the source of one 2, while the other of which is connec a conductor 6 with an overload energized magnet 7 that is in turn connected by a conductor 8, plate 9 and conductor 10 with the motor the ends at 12 on opposite sides of a flange 13 which is secured to' and insulated from a switch part or lever 14. The switch part or lever 14 is provided with a slot through which tongues or fingers 15. on the flange 13 are passed, these tongues being bent in olpposite directions on'th opposite side of t e switch part 14 so as to secure said flange to the switch part, insulating material or strips 16 being interposed between the flange and its securing tongues and the switch art so that the flange will be insulated ii om said switch part.
The switch part or'lever 14 is, in this instance, pivoted on a stud .17 secured to an insulating base 18 permitting the switch part to turn about an axis perpendicular to said base. This base also has the'contacts 3 and 4 mounted thereon and insulated from each other by an insulating member pivot of the detent. Movement of the switch part or lever 14 may be efl'ected by a plunger 20 which is guided in a perforated stud 21 on the base 18 and has a rock-ing connection .at-22 with the switch part 14 so as to permit the sl-id ing of the plunger 20 and the swinging or pivoting of the switch part 14.
The switch part 14 has, in this instance, a tendency to move to open the switch and to this end has at one end a lateral projected arm 23 with which one end of a helical spring 24 is connected. the arm having a number of openings 25 so that the end 24 of the spring may be adjustably connected to the switch arm 14 to increase or decrease the spring tension on said memer. With the end in view of holding the switch part against movement under the action of the spring 24, in this instance, to open the switch, a holdin means is provided comprising, in this em odiment, a detent 26 pivoted at 27 and having a nose 28 adapted to be projected through an open ing or slot 29 in the switch part 14 in order that a shoulder 30 onthe detent may engage with the face of the switch part 14 isposed away from the face opposite the The detent is norto this end, the spring 24 which acts on the switch part 14 may have its oppg slilte 1s connection is preferably adjustable and may be obtained byproviding the detent with a series of openings 32 inany one of which the end-21 may be fitted. 1

This arm of the detent has a laterally deflected portion 34 to which a finger piece 35 is rigidly secured, this finger piece projecting to one side of the base 18 preferably through an opening 36 in the cover member 37 which fits overthe parts on the base and is held thereover by a screw 38; The electromagnet has its coil surrounding, in this instance, one arm of a U shape laminated pole piece 39 to.
the other arm of which the detent is pivoted at 27, the arm on which the coil is arranged being situated beneath the arm 33 of the detent 26 so that said arm acts as ning condition, suitable means is employedwhich is brought into effect only after and while the circuit is closed by the switch. In the embodiment shown m Fig. 6 this means is electrical and comprises a shunting means-for the overload energized magnet coil 7. In this instance, the shunting is effected by providing a post or contact 40 and making the terminals 3 and 4 resilient or yieldable so that while the connector 11 connects the contacts 3 and 4, the flange 13, which is in electrical connection with said connector 11, may engagethe contact 40 and thus establish a shunt circuit from the connecting plate 9 by way of conductor 41 to the contact 40. It will thus be seen that the switch has a switch part 14 movable to a position while the switch is closed by the connector conneeting the contacts 3 and 4 without opening the switch, this switch part bringing into eflect a means which insures the freedomof the holding means or detent from the. overload energized magnet when the motor has reached normal running condition.
In the embodiment of the invention .illustrated in Fig. 8 and diagrammatically in Fig. 7, the means for insuring the freedom of the holding means from the overload en- .ergized magnet when the motor has reached Instead of a shunt circuit for the overload energized magnet, the holding means is positively free from the overload energized magnet when the switch part 14 is moved to a certain position, while the switch is closed, without opening the switch.
This mechanical means, in this instance, comprises a bevelled face or projection 42 formed on the detent 26 and adapted to be engaged by one wall of the slot or opening 29 in the switch part 14: after the switch part has moved to close the switch and the contacts thereafter yield. The normal posi-' tion of the switch is shown in Fig 8 where the cooperation between the switch part 14 and the detent 26 is shown. The other parts of this embodiment of the invention are the same as like illustrated parts in the embodiment illustrated diagrammatically in Fig. -5.
From the foregoing it will be seen that .there has been provided a combined switch and overload circuit breaker in which a switch part is movable to a position, while the switch is closed, without opening the switch for the purpose of insuring the freedom of the holding means for the switch partfrom an overload energized magnet when the motor has reached normal running condition. This switch part is manually operated in one direction and automatically moved in the other direction by a spring which also acts on a detent forming the holding means for said switch part. The detent has an arm actin as an armature for an overload energize magnet and provided with a laterally turned end on which a finger piece is mounted through which the detent ma be manuallycontrolled from the extenor of the cover of .the switch. Certain features of the switch are adapted for switch of other types, as for instance, the single s ring which acts on the detent and the movaiile switch part held by the detent.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a switch having a switch part with two positions in which it ma lie while the switch is closed, one of sai positions bein farther away from the f extreme open osition than the other, means for holding the switch part in the closed position nearer the extreme open position, said means being constructed to permit the switch part to be moved freely toward the closed position farthest from the extreme open position, means in which energy is stored when the switch partis moved away from the extreme open position, said means tending to hold the switch part away from the closed position farthest from the extreme open position, magnet for operating? the holding means to permit the switch part to move to open the switch under the action of the means in an overload energized which energy has been stored, and means' brought into effect-upon the movement of the switch part to the closed position farthest removed for insuring the freedom of the .holding means from the overload energized magnet, said means having provision for causing it to become inoperative when the switch part is moved from the farthest closed. position to .the closed position nearer the open position under the action of the means in which energy has been stored, so that the holding means can hold the switch part until the latter is released by the overload energized magnet.

In combination with a switch having a switch part with two positions in which it may lie while the switch is closed, one of said sitions being farther away from the switch part than the other, means for holding the switch part in the closed position gized-ma et brought into operation when the switc part is moved to the farthest closed position and thrown out of operation when t e switch part is moved toward the closed position nearer the open position by the means in which energy is stored.

The combination with a switch having a pair of yielding contacts and 'a switch part movable for. connecting said contacts, means for moving said switch part for opening the switch, and means for holding the switch part against movement to open the for operating said holding means to release the switch part, of means, brought into efect upon movement of the switch part, to cause the yielding of the contacts for insuring the freedom of the holding means from the overload energized magnet.
