UNITED FRANK Gr. KRAKAN, F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEAM BOILER.
Application filed September 13, 19:21.V ASerial No. 500,412.
To all whom t may conce/m.'
Be it known that I, FRANK G. KRAKAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in steam boilers and has for its principal object to provide an improved type of boiler for producing steam in an extremely short time, which may be readily used as a portable boiler for use Von motor vehicles and the like.
Another object of the invention resides in the pro-vision of a boiler having water tubes combined with fire tubes in such a way as to cause the boiler to be particularly quick acting, so that quite a head of steam may be produced in a minimum time.
Still another object of'the invention is to provide a boiler of novel shape having a large heating area which is disposed to render the entire value of the heat from the burner available.
As another object the invention contemplates the provision of a means for superheating the steam, preheating the f-eed water, and also preheating the fuel so that the same may be readily vaporizcd upon its entrance into the burner.
With the above and other objects in view which will become more apparent as the dcscription proceeds the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a top plan view of this improved boiler,
Figure- 2, is a side view in elevation of Figure l,
Figure 3, is an end view partly in seetion of this improved boiler, and
Figure 4, is a longitudinal sectional view through the boiler.
Referring to the drawings in detail the numeral designates the boiler which is provided with a steam dome 11 and a pair of divergent legs 12. The boiler shell is inverted Yeshaped in cross section and is held against distortion by means of suit-- able stay-bolts 13. Fire tubes 14 connect the upper and lower walls of the legs and the stay-bolts 15 are arranged at spaced intervals between said upper and lower walls for an obvious purpose. In order that access may be had to the interior of the boiler, I provide suitable hand holes 1,6E
'which are provided with removable covers 17 which are secured in place in the approved manner.
Depending from the under side of each leg of the boiler is a plurality of nipples 21 to which is connected by means of unions 22 the nipples 23 of the mud drum 24. A plurality of inwardly extending nipples 25 is arranged on the inner sides of the end portions of the mud-drum 24, and connected to these nipples are pipes 26 which lead upwardly into openings 27 formed in the end walls of the boiler shell. As shown in Figures 3 and 4t, these pipes are arranged in such a manner that those entering one end of the boiler lead from that portion of the mud drum which is located at the opposite end of the boiler. It will thus be seen that the pipes will provide water tubes which cooperate with the balance of the boiler in raising the temperature of the water in a minimum of time, and the said pipes will interlaee in such a manner as to present the greatest possible area to the heat as it passes upwardly through the tire tubes of the main portion of the` boiler.
While I have not shown nor described any of the usual safety appliances used in connection with boilers of this nature, it is to be understood that the customary steam.
outlets to the throttle valve, safety valve, and the similar devices making for the safety and convenience of steam boilers may be provided. It is also toI be understood that a suitable water inlet is to be provided i through which the preheated feed-water may be entered into the mud drum or the boiler proper. I do not in any way wish to liniit myself to they particular structure set forth inthe foregoing specification nor to that illustrated in the drawing with the exception to those essential features making for the eiiiciency and economy of operation of boilers of this nature.
While in the foregoing there has been shown y/anol described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that certain minor changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts -may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of theA invention as claimed.

What is claimed is 1. A steam boiler co1nprisinga steam dome, hollow divergent legs extending from the lower end of said dome, lire tubes arranged at spaced intervals in the legs, depending nipples on the under sides of the divergent legs, a rectangular mud-drinn oonneoted to thenipples und lying horizontally beneath the boiler, and pipes connecting opposite runs of the inud druni with opposite. ends of the boiler.
2. A steam boiler comprising, a steam dome, hollow7 divergent legs extending from the lower side of the dome, lire tubes exmerels tending through the legs, depending nipples 15 on the under side of each leg, u rectangular mud druin connected with the depending nipples, nipples extending inwardly from the end runs of the niud druin, pipes oonneoting one end run of the niud drum with 20 Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, this 25 9th dey of September', 1921.
