To all whom tfmay concern: p Be it known that I, WILLIAM THOMAS HUNT, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Manchester, in the county 'of Lancaster, England, have invented certain Improvements in Steamv Separators (for which I have filed applications in England Feb. 20, 1920, and Nov. 22, 1920, Patent No. 168,077), of which the folvlowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in steam se arators of theinternal type for use inside ancashire, Cornish and like boilers and which withmodiications maybe 16 made applicable to marine, locomotive and other steam boilers, the object being to ob tain the separatin effect of anovel ar.- rangement of. ba e vplates which provide distlnct passages for the steam and shelter 20 for the moisture and solid matters in suspension when these ylatter are once separated from the saturated steam, the arrangement being such that it is impossible for the moisture to again cross the path of the steam and become entrained in it as such steam is leaving the boiler, a further feature providing for the return of the separated moistures to and below the water level in the boiler. A still further object of my invention is to enable deposited dirt and the like to be removed from the separator tothe exteriorof the boiler whilst'not interfering with the operation of the separator 'within `the boiler. y

partly so, as toits upper portion c though the semi-circular portion may be re-placed by a construction of `V-shaped trough form. The housing may be of any suitable length, width, and height and its lower portion be provided with' one or more outlets d entering the water space lof the boiler. The aforesaid outlets vmay be extended in the form of tubes e which may themselves only enter the water space, the main structure of the separator lying above the normal level ofthe water in the boiler. The upper side of the housing is provided with a pipe or conduit f directly opening into the junction valve standpipe which controls the passage of-the steamfrom the boiler to the service required, said pipe f at its lower en d opening intothe steam space m1 of the separator. Further, v.the pipe f vmay be arranged at any suitable position in the length of the housing and if more than one pipe is used in the latter, these would'- be connectedby a chamber or pipe.

Thev outer ends of the passages between the plates open into the space` h between the outer housing andthe inner The upper edges ot the plates rest against longltudinal plates n and the whole structure is tied together by bolts o and nuts p where required the latter bearing against narrow longitudinal plates g. End plates 1' are t ted to make the only passage for the steam to enter through the loames.
lVhen a separator constructed as described isy in use steam passes trom the outside ot the loewe plates i into the steam space m1 through the slots k in such plates, the arrangement ot the latter being such that it has to pass in a snuous or tortuous course through the slots la and passagesfm before assing from the steam space m1 to the outet to the junction valve stand pipe. lin doing this the moisture contained in the steam is deposited upon the surfaces of the plates within the passages m from whence it discharges itself downwards to the space h between the inner casing and housing ot the apparatus trom whence it finds its way back to the water space of the boiler. ln this way the steam is allowed to escape through to the junction valve in a substantially dry condition. rlhe bame plates arranged as described also prevents scum, dirt or the like passing along with the steam to the junction valve.

'llhus a certain amount ot dirt or mud may lodge within the space h and in order to remove this ll connect to the tubes e a pipe or chamber s of any suitable shape in cross section and ot required length both ends ot the pipe being closed except that at one end a pipe a1 is led trom it to the outside ot the boiler. lhis pipe is provided with a valve ot an approved construction. The ipe or cham er a is provided at one or bot sides ape-eener with a number ot openings t covered with clack valves u. Normally these valves are ree to open outwardly to allow water from the separator to pass into the water space of the boiler, but become tightly closed when the tap on pipe s1 is opened :tor the purpose ot withdrawing the deposited mud which it does by causing a sudden inrushot steam into and through the whole of the separator battles, then by way ot' the space in the housing through the vertical pipes and along the horizontal pipe or chamber to the outside ot the boiler, the mudubeing discharged to a suitable receptacle or drain. ln this way a thorough scavenging of the apparatus takes place. 'lhe tap is then closed and the separator proceeds to act again in the normal way. y
What l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A steam separator, comprising an outer trough-shaped casing provided with outlets tor steam and for water, an inner troughshaped 4casing having sides ot less height than the sides of the outer casing, a water space being formed between the bottoms of the two casings, and two series ot superposed corrugatedplates arranged at an angle to each other with their upper and adjacent end portions projecting above the top of the outer casing and their outer and lower ends vbearing I against the sides of the outer casing, said plates being suppo.ted on thetop edges oi' the inner casing and having openings in the sides of their corrugations for the passage of wet steam, said plates being adapted to discharge condensed water from the lower ends ot their corrugations into the said water space. l y l ln testimony. whereof l have hereunto serL my hand.
