THREAD-TAKING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRED AsHwon'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Threadax 'ing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to thread waxing devices for applying melted wax to sewing thread.
An objectof the present invention is to provide'novel and improved means in a thread waxing device for guiding the thread through the wax in the wax receptacle and for stripping the superfluous wax from the thread as it leaves the receptacle.
Another object of the present invention is to provide novel and improved means in a thread waxing device for heating the wax receptacle.
With these and other objects in View. the features of the present invention consist in certain constructions, arrangements, and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advantages of which will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
j The several features of the present invention will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a "thread waxing device embodying the features in their preferred form, which is shown mounted on the frame of a sewing or other machine; Fig. 2'is a'plan view of the device; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the lower portion of the device; Fig. 4 is a sectional View, partly in elevation, taken on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed sectional view, partly in elevation, of the thread guiding and wax stripping means. 7
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings is provided with a wax receptacle 2 and a heating device 4 mounted upon a bracket 6 which is iilnstrated as being secured to a portionof the frame 8 of the machine. The wax receptacle is provided with a substantially cylindrical wall 9 having a rearwardly projecting lug 10' which is in sliding engagement with 1920. Serial No. 389,142.
a supporting pin 12 having its lower end secured in an aperture in the bracket 6, the supporting pin extending through an aperture in the lug. The bottom of the wax receptacle rests upon a collar or nut 14 screw-threaded on a stud 16 having itslower end reduced in diameter and removably clamped in a split collar 18 formed on the forward end of the bracket 6. The bottom wall of the wax receptacle is shaped to form 'a downwardly opening channel or pocket 20 which is U-shapedin cross-section and extends diametrically across the bottom of the wax receptacle. The heating device comprises a steam chamber 22 which is shaped to fit the pocket 20 and is provided with an inlet 24 in its rear end and an outlet 26 in its forward end. The steam chamber 22 is secured to the bracket 6 by means of the stud 16, the stud and chamber being made integral. With this construction it will be apparent that by turning the nut 14 the wax receptacle may be moved longitudinally on the supporting pin 12 to adjust the inner portion of the pocket 20 toward and from the top portion of the steam chamber 22, the sides of the pocket and steam chamber remaining in contact. Such adjustment of the wax receptacle may be conveniently utilized to regulate the degree of heat radiated from the steam chamber to the wax in the wax receptacle. By adjusting the wax receptacle upwardly the air space thereby provided between the upper portion of the steam chamber and the inner portion of the socket 20 results in a, decrease in the degree :of heat radiated to the wax in the wax receptacle, the adjustment :of the 'wax receptacle downwardly results in an increase in the degree of'heat radiated to the wax, and when the wax receptacle has been adjusted to bring the inner portion of the.
pocket 20 into contact with the upper por tion of the steam chamber, the maximum degree of heat is radiated to the wax.
The top of the wax receptacle is closed by a cover 28securedby screws 30 thereto. The cover 28 is provided with the usual opening 34' through which wax maybe supplied to the wax receptacle. 6. A thread waxing device having, in combination, a wax receptacle having the outside of one wall shaped to form a pocket, a heating element shaped to fit the pocket, and means for relativel adjusting the receptacle and heating eement toward and from each other.
7. A thread waxing device having, in combination, a wax receptacle having its bottom wall shaped to form a pocket openin downwardly having its upper portion su stantially semi-cylindrical, a heating element shaped to fit the pocket, and means for relatively adjusting the receptacle and heating element toward and from each other to vary the relative position of the heating element and the inner wall portion of the pocket.
8. A thread waxing device having, in combination, a wax receptacle having its bottom wall shaped to form a pocket opening downwardly, a heating element shaped to fit the pocket, a shank projecting downwardly from the heating element, and a nut threaded on the shank and supporting the receptacle capable of being adjusted on the shank to vary the relative position of the top of the heating element and the inner portion of the pocket.

A thread waxing device having, in combination, a wax receptacle having its bottom wall shaped to form a pocket U- shaped in cross-section and opening downwardly, a heating element shaped to fit the pocket, and means for relatively adjusting the receptacle and heating element to provide a space between the top portion of the heating element and the inner portion of the pocket while the side walls of the heating element and pocket remain in contact.

A thread waxing device having, in combination, a wax receptacle, means for supporting the wax receptacle comprising a lug projecting from the longitudinal wall of the receptacle provided with an aperture extending longitudinally of the receptacle, and a supporting pin extending into the aperture, a heating element located beneath the receptacle, and means for moving the receptacle on the supporting pin in a direction toward and from the heating element to vary the amount of heat supplied to the wax in the receptacle.
11. A thread waxing device having, in combination, a wax receptacle, and means to guide the thread through the wax in the receptacle and to cause stretches of the thread to be twisted about each other, said means having provision for adjustment to vary the amount that the stretches of thread are thus twisted.
12. A thread waxing device having, in combination, a wax receptacle, and thread guiding and stripping devices arranged to guide the thread through the wax in the receptacle and having provision for adjustment to vary the stripping action on the thread.
