A. A. MAILLETT CLOSURE AND DAUBER Filed Sept. 1. 1923 INVENTOR WITNESS:
ATTORN EY Patented June 3, 1924.
umrao stares CLOSURE AND DAUIBER.
Application filed September 1, 1928. Serial No. 680,577.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. MAILLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the count of New York and State of New York, ave invented new and useful Improvements in Closures and Daubers, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provlde a combined closure and dauber for use in connection with bottles that contain shoe polish and by means of which the polish may be applied to the shoe through the medium of the dauber without the necessity of removing the dauber from the bottle as is now generally done.
It is also my purpose to provide a combined closure and dauber which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efiiciency, and durability which may be manufactured and marketed at small cost and which may be readily and quickly applied to the bottle.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing I Figure 1, is a vertical sectional view through the upper end of a shoe polish bottle showing my invention applied thereto,- the closure feature being shown in open position.
Figure 2, is a similar view partly in elevation showing the closure in sealing position.
Figure 3, is a top plan View.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates the upper portion of a bottle provided with the usual upstanding neck 2, that is formed on its outer surface with the usual head 3,
Across the top of the neck 2 is my improved combination closure and dauber which in the present instance, comprises a relatively thick disk 4 of felt or some similar substance. On the under surface of the felt disk 4 is arelatively thin disk 5, formed of cardboard, paper or the like. This disk 5, is, secured to the under surface of the felt disk by an adhesive such as glue for instance and the bottom surface of the disk 5 is also preferably secured near its marginal edges to the mouth of the bottle by glue or other adhesive. 5 and the upper portion of the neck of the bottle 2 is a section of flexible material 6, such as cheese cloth or the like. This cheese cloth is preferably stretched tightly across Enveloping the disks 4 and the outer surface of the felt disk 4 and is thereof so that when the bottle is inverted and the dauber applied to the shoe, the contents of the bottle may flow through the openings 8onto the cheese cloth and so saturate the cheese cloth so as to facilitate the application of the contents of the bottle to the shoe.
In order to close the openings 8, a closure in the form of a pin 9. is provided which in the present instance is carried by a disk 10 of some suitable material. This disk 10, is preferably, though not necessarily of the same diameter of the disks 4: and 5 and when placed over the cloth 6, the pin 9 penetrates the cloth and enters the openings 8 so as to effectively seal such openings and prevent accidental spilling of the contents of the bottle in the event that the latter should be turned over.
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, 1 wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modifications and variations may be made within the scope of the claims and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim 1. The combination with a shoe polish bottle having an annular head on the outer surface of the neck thereef, of a dauber arranged across the mouth of the bottle and including a relatively thick felt disk, a thin disk carried by the underside of said felt disk and the underside of said thin disk being adhesively secured to the mouth of the bottle, a sheet of flexible material enveloping the mouth of the bottle, and a fastening means around said flexible material below said head to hold the dauber in place.
2. A combined closure and dauber for shoe polish bottles comprising a relatively thick felt disk adapted to close the mouth of a bottle, a small disk on the under 'side of said felt disk and secured thereto, and an envelope of flexible material over said disks and adapted to be secured to the neck of a bottle, said disks being formed with aligning discharge openings and means for closing said openin.
3. A combine closure and dauber for shoe polish bottles comprising a relatively thick felt disk adapted to close the mouth of a bottle, a small disk on the under side of said felt disk and secured thereto, an envelope of flexible material over said disks and adapted to be secured to the neck of a bottle. said disks being formed with aligning discharge openings, and a pin engageable in said openings to close the latter.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my 2c signature.
ALBERT A. MAlULLlET'l.
