TED STATES CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS SELF, OF BA'RHAM., LOUSIANA.
ACETYLENEGAS GENERATOR.
Application filed October 10, 1521.` Serial No. 506,695.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRrsToPHER C. SELF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barham, in the Parish of Vernon and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Aoetylene-Gas Generator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to acetylene gas generators, the primary object of the invention being to provide automatically controlled means for moving the carbide container into and out of the water container.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for guiding the carbide container in its movements to insure against binding between the walls of the Water container and walls of the carbide container.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, Y
Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure4 1 is a vertical sectional view through a gas generator constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the outer casing or body portion of the generator, which is preferably circular in cross section, but it is to be understood that the body portion may be in any desired formation.
Secured to the inner walls of the body portion are opposed guide members 6 which have curved portions 7 designed to accommodate the rods 8 `which are connected to the inner member 9, that provides the gas chamber of the device.
This inner member 9 is of a diameter less than the diameter of the body portion 5 to permit of movement of the inner membe-r 9 longitudinally within the body ortion, and as shown this inner member is provided with en onen lower extremity as indicated at 10, e upper extremity thereof being closed as b r means of the walls 11. The wall 11 is formed with an upstanding filling nozzle 12 .which closed by means of the screw cap 13 to permit carbide to be positioned within the carbide container 14 which lis carried by the inner member 9.
The carbide container is in the form of a tubular member secured to the wall 11, the walls of the carbide container being disposedin spaced relation with the walls of the inner member 9 to provide a gas chamber 15, wherein -the gas generated by the Contact of the water with the carbide will collect therein.
Supported within the carbide container are the shelves 16 which are disposed in spaced relation with each other, and are formed preferably of wire mesh material so that portions of the carbide supported on the upper shelves may fall through to the adjacent lower shelves as the carbide disintegrates, it being understood that the size of the mesh of the shelves vary, the mesh of the uppermost shelf being relatively large as compared with the mesh of the lower shelves.
Formed in the wall of the carbide container 14, and disposed in planes above the carbide supported by the shelves are the openings 17 which permit the gas generated within the carbide container to pass outwardly and into the gas chamber 15.
A discharge pipe indicated at 18 has its upper end disposed in the gas chamber 15 and extends through an opening in the body portion of the device, where the same may have connection with a suitable tank or burner to suppl;v the same with gas.
In the operation of the. device, fluid is placed in the body portion to the desired level, and carbide is placed on the upper shelf 16. As the inner member 9 moves downwardly7 and the carbide contained on the upper shelf 16 contacts with the water, gas is generated, whichV gas passes upwardly and into the gas chamber 15 through the openings 17.
It follows that as the gas collects in the chamber 15, the inner member is raised, moving the 'carbide out of contact with the water to stop the generating process.
As the gas pressure within the chamber 15 is reduced, the inner member again moves downwardly bringing the carbide again into Contact with the water to generate gas. It follows that as the carbide on the upper sheltl 16 disintegrates, the particles drop through the mesh and fall onto the adjacent lower shel't where the same will canse gas to be generated, when the inner member moves downwardly and brings the carbide .into contact with the water.
Then carbide falls to the adjacent lower shelf and has been generated to litt the inner member, the carbide on the lower shelf will be raised out of Contact with the water in the chamber. When the gas generated has been exhaustedto such a degree as to allow the inner member to move downwardly, gas will again be rgenerated as soon as the carbide on the lowermost n shelf touches the water to the end that the inner member is again moved upwardly movingr the carbide from the water.
lt might be further stated that a drain pipe 19 is provided adjacent to the bottom of the body portion of the generator,
whereby the sediment in the body portion may be Carried oli.
Having` thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is An acetylene gas generator comprising any outer casing, an inner member within the outer casing;- and adapted to move vertieally therein. a carbide container supported by the inner member, a plurality of shelves formed ot wire mesh material supported within the carbide container, the mesh of one shelf being greater than the mesh of the adjacent lower shelf to permit carbide to fall to the lower adjacent shelf, and means tor ei'hausting gas from the generator.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as ture in the presence oi"Y two witnesses.
