IMPROVEMENT iN LANTERNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,633, dated April 14, 1874; application filed September 1l, 1873.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. BAENDOL- LAR, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompany ing drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in constructing a lantern with a spring base-holder, by means of which lamp-base is readily attached and detached, the holder being formed of two springs, soldered at their lower ends to the cl1imney-base,with a ridge formed in their middle to serve as a catch or lock to unite the lamp-base to the lantern by projecting through an opening in the chimneyfbase into a groove in the lamp-base, and the upper ends ot' these springs bent so as to project through an opening in the chimney-base, and serve as the means by which to operate the springs from the outside of the lantern, as will more fully appear below.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

VIn the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same.

A is the lamp 5 B, the base, to which the F is the top; E, the guard; D, the glass chimney. a is a groove on the inner face of the base, and extending completely around it. C is the chimney-base, having two square openings, c, on two ot' its op posite sides. One side is shown in Fig. 2. The chimney D rests upon this base, and the guard E is rigidly attached to it also. b are the springs forming the base-holder, andeaclr is attached, by soldering or other means, to the chimney-base (l, as shown in Fig. l. The springs b are bent in the peculiar form shown in l, so that'when they are attached to base U the ridge or corrugation e of each will project through lower opening c in base C, (see Fig. 2,) so as to catch in the groove a, as shown in Fig. l, and the upper loose end or thumb-piece d of each spring will protrude through the upper opening c.

By pressing the thumb-piece d of each spring b, the ridges c are forced in toward lamp A,

and clear out of the groove a. The upper part of the lantern can now be removed. By simply setting the chimney-base C within the base B, and forcing base C downward, the springs b automatically act so as to throw their ridges e into the groove a, and so connect the base and upper part of the lantern.

It will be noticed that the spring-catches b b are secured entirely within the chimney-base C, (excepting thumb-pieces 61,) and it slides within base B when the lantern is in use. The springs b are thus advantageously defended by the thickness of these two bases C and B. My mode of constructing the spring-catches b with the ridge c near to the end of the spring, where it is soldered, enables me to have a much stronger spring to lock the lamp-base to the upper part of the lantern than if the ridge c were at the top of the spring, where the thumbpieces. are. The thumb-pieces, acting upon the top of the springs, have the advantage of a long leverage on the springs, and so enables them to be easily and quickly operated.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The spring baseholder formed of springcatches b b, constructed, as shown, by forming on each spring a ridge, e, sufficiently high to project through opening c in chimney-base G and catch in the groove a, of base B, the lower end of each spring soldered to base C,and the upper end of each bent into the thumb-piece d, to project through opening c in base G.

2. The groove a formed in the base B, as described, in combination with spring-catches b b and chimney-base C, with openings c, con structed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
