To all 10710721712 may concern. A v 7 Be it known that I, STERLING H. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Connection for Pin Lifters, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable anyone skilled in the art to 1 which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a connection for pin lifters and particularly to improvements in that form of connection shown and de scribed in Patent No. 1,358,361 granted to me November 9, 1920.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of connection made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan View of a coupler head to which the connection is applied. Figure 2 is a front elevation, on an enlarged scale. Figure 3 is a detail view of the upper hook member, and Figure 4 is a similar view of the lower hook member.
10 indicates a coupler head controlled by a lock pin 11 having a transverse eye 12. The pin 11 is adapted to be lifted by an operating rod 13 provided with a forwardly proj ecting arm 14, in the end of which is formed a transverse eye 15.
My connector comprises an upper member 17 and a lower member 18 pivoted together by means of a rivet 19 formed integral with the member 18 and passing through an aperture 20 in the member 17. Each part of the connector is provided with a laterally projecting tail piece, 21 and 22 respectively, adapted to strike against the other part to prevent the pivot from being drawn into a direct line between the eyes. The member 17 terminates in a loop 23 and the member 18 4 in a loop 24. These loops are open before the device is applied to the car, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The loops are similar in shape but the loop 24; is made larger than the loop 23 so as to accommodate pin eyes of varying sizes. The open sides of the loops are both turned in the same direction which greatly facilitates the application of the device to the car. 25 and 26 are the ends of the loops 23 and 2& respectively, which are reduced in thickness and slightly tapered so thatby hammering on these ends they may be bent in a continuation of theinnercurvature of the loops to close said loops, as shown in Figure 2. The end26of the loop 18is.in dented (as best shown inFigure so that it cannot be inserted in the eye 15, thus preventing the device from being applied to the car in an inverted position. Shoulders 27 and 28 situated at the junction to the shanks and loops of the members 17 and 18 respectively, form stops for limiting the inward movement of the ends 25 and. 26 when the loops are closed.
In assembling the parts of the connector the rivet 19 is inserted in the opening 20 and its reduced ortion 29 expanded to form a head 30. The shoulder between the reduced portion and the body of the rivet prevents the head from binding. To position the connector on the car the loop 23 is inserted in the eye 15 and the loop 24: in the eye 12, after which the ends 25 and 26 are hammered against the shoulders 27 and 28 respectively. Theoperation of the connector is the same as that shown in my prior patent above referred to.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coupler lock pin pro vided with an eye, of an operating lever therefor also provided withan eye, and a connection comprising two members hinged together, said members terminating in open loops adapted to be closed after insertion in the eyes, both of said loops being open at the same side. I
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a coupler lock pin provided with an eye, of an operating lever therefor also provided with an eye, and a connection comprising two members pivoted together, said members terminating in open loops adapted to engage with said eye, the ends of said loops being reduced in thickness, whereby they may be readily bent in continuation of the inner curvature of the loops to close same.

ends of said loops being reduced in thickness,said loops being of different diameters and the larger loop engaging with the lock pin eye, the reduced end of said larger loop being widened to prevent its insertion in the lever eye.
