- A. w. GATES DISPENS'ING DEVICE Filed Nov. 294 192] Patented May 27, 19524.
ALBERT w. earns, ole-PORTLAN oaneon.
DISPENSING DEVICE.
Application filed November 29, 1921 Serial No 518,604. i
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. (hires, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My device relates to purveying devices in general, and particularly to such devices as are adaptable for use upon the dining table for the measuring and dispensing of such commodities as sugar, and the like, the object being to provide in such a device simple, easily removable and cleansable means of measuring a predetermined quantity of the commodity and dispensing the same to the operator of the device. A further object of my device is to provide means of mounting advertising matter upon such a device, for use in public eating places.
I accomplish the above objects by means of the construction. illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a part of this application for Letters'Patent, like characters ofreference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of my device, parts being broken away to illustrate the construction. a
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional elevation in dispens ng position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional elevation in upright position.
Fig. 4 is a sectionalplan view upon the line 44 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cut-off member.
In general my device consists of a receptacle of any suitable form having a hollow base, a dispensing orifice in said base communicating with a dispensing tube, and a removable cut-off member mounted within said hollow base.
The body 6 of the receptacle may be of any suitable and desirable form, and is provided with a hollow cylindrical base 7, said base having an orifice therein communicating with a dispensing tube 8.
At the upper end of the base 7, where it joins the body 6 is disposed the cut-01f member. Said measuring member consists of a cylindrical rim 9 projecting downward from a top disk 10, said disk projecting beyond the outer surface of said rim to form an place, as shown in Fig. 1'." The disk 10 contains'a substantially semicircular orifice'll therethrough, one edge of said orifice being straight and disposed adjacent to but not exactly upon the diametrical line of said disk. A. substantially semicircular diaphragm 12 is disposed beneath the disk 10 and is integrally joined to the rim 9, as shown. in Fig. 1. One edge of said diaphragm is straight, and is disposed upon the opposite side of the diametrical line of the disk 10 relatively to the straight side of the orifice 11. A handle 1.3 is provided upon the cutoff member for convenience in removing the latter.
When the device is in upright position as illustrated in Fig. 1, the commodity therein will substantially fill the cut-off member and the hollow base, as shown in Fig. 3.
When the device is inclined, as shown in Fig. 2, the commodity will flow from the hollow base through the tube 8, the cut-off device preventing any of the commodity other than that contained within the hollow base from escaping.
When the device is again replaced in upright position the commodity will again substantially fill the hollow base, and the device is in condition for further operation.
I am aware that other devices for dis- My device may be made of any size, and
constructed of any materials deemed convenient and suitable for a device of this char acter, and while I have illustrated and described a form of construction and arrangement of parts found desirable in materializing my invention, I wish toinclude in this application all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may fairly be considered to come within the scope and purview of my device as defined in the appended claims.
Having disclosed my invention so that others may be enabled to construct and to g memes use the same, What I claim as new, and die measuring chamber; and a discharge outlet on said measuring chamber.
In Wi ness whereof I claim the foregoing as in oWnI hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses at Portland county of Multnoniah, State of Oregon, this 15th day of Nov, 1921.
ALBERT W. GATES.
