Be it known that I, FRED H. Masonya citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State v of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Glare Shields, Side Shields, and Signaling Means; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an attachment for automobiles, affording by means of an improved and simplified structure, an auxiliary side windshield, a signal device and a glare shield. I
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated which will be easily applied, durable and readily manipulated. Further subordinate objects. will more clearly appear in connection with the detailed description hereafter.
The invention consists. in the novel con:
struction, arrangement and combinations'of parts as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Three sheets of drawings accompany this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout.

Inaccordanc'e with my present invention, a translucent plate 1 of amber or other'suitably colored glass orsiinilar material is resil-iently' supported as by a spring member 5 from a rotatable part removably mounted to-the side frame member Sof the windshield of a car. Means are provided as will be hereinafter described, by means of which the plate 1 may be rotated to occupy a position with its long axis substantially parallel with" the plane of the windshield, but its short axis extending obliquelythereto, as is illustrated in Fig. 1, in which position the device operates as an auxiliaryside windshield. The plate 1 may be further rotated and automatically secured with its long axis oblique to the horizontal as is illustrated in Fig; 2, in'which position its'short axis will be inelinedalso obliquely to the horizontal, in which position it'. will operate very effectively and efficiently to shield the eyes of the driver from the-glare of headlights on a car approaching from the opposite direction. Means are further-provided for a still further rotationof the'device with its long axis in a horizontal position, as is illustrated in Fig; Spin which position suitable lettering provided adjacent one end of the plate indicates a signal to stop, for the benefit of following cars.
To support the fragile plate 1, substantially U-shaped having one leg provided with offset lugs 4 and its other leg provided with a threaded and adjustable clamping member 3. A preferably fiat spring member 5 is secured by its'ends to the offset lugs 4130f the clampin members'2 as by bolts 6, and this spring member 5' is secured centrally as by screw 8 to a spindle 7 having one end provided with a flat face 11 to provide a seat for the spring 5 and its other end squared as at 11 to provide a seat for an operating wheel 26 adapted to be secured thereto as by a screw 27. A transverse pin 9 is positioned trans versely through spindle 7 adjacent the flattened end 11.
By pressing upon hand wheel 26, spindle 7 is forced against the compression of spring 22 through tubular guide 12, thus moving pin 9 from engagement with notches 15 whereupon spindle 7 may be rotated as desired. Upon the release of the outward pressure upon hand wheel 26, spring 22 will retract spindle 7, again bringing pin 9 into engagement with the then adjacent notches 15 to secure the device in adjusted position. If desired, the entire supporting device can be swung upon the frame S as a vertical axis if it is desired to modify the position of the device in a horizontal plane.
Where the frame of the windshield S is of an irregular shape, a supplementary clamping member 24 may be provided being of a substantially U-shape, having the ends of its legs bent to conform to the coufiguration of the frame S, while the portion intermediate the legs is bent to embrace a cylindrical post 25 to which the device may be attached, as previously described. With this modified structure, the clamping members 19 may be advantageously combined into a one-piece clamp 19 bent into tubular form and having lugs 20 extending from adjacent edges as is illustrated in Fig. 6, the holes 21 coinciding to receive the tubular guide 12.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a supporting device comprising a spindle, a tubular guide for the spindle, clamping means adapted to secure the tubular member to a support including complementary parts slidable on the tubular guide, and housing members adapted to embrace the tubular guide to secure the clamping means.
2. In a device of the character described, a supporting device comprising a spindle, a tubular guide for the spindle, locking means to prevent the rotation of the spindle in the tubular guide, clamping means for securing the tubular guide to a support, housing members co-acting with the tubular guide to secure the clamping means and enclosing the locking means and means for unlocking the spindle and rotating the same in the tubular guide.
3. In a device of the character described, a supporting device comprising a spindle having a transverse pin, a tubular guide for the spindle, said tubular guide having one end provided with a plurality of diametrically disposed notches adapted to engage said transverse pin, said guide being fun ther provided with spaced exterior threaded parts, clamping members having lugs provided with orifices adapted to receive the tubular guide and to seat thereon interme- .7
diate its threaded parts, tubular members each provided adjacent one end with interior threads adapted to co-mate with the threaded parts of the tubular guide, a compression coil spring adapted to surround the spindle and seat against one end of the tubular guide within a tubular member and stop means carried by the spindle to operate against said compression spring.
4. In a device of the character described, a supporting device comprising a spindle provided with a transverse pin, a tubular guide for the spindle having one end transversely notched to receive said pin, tubular housing members adapted to embrace the tubular guide, clamping members slidable on the tubular guide and adapted to be se cured thereon by the tubular housing members co -acting therewith, and a compression s rin 0 erative to maintain the s indle with its transverse pin in engagement with the notched end of the tubular guide and all Within said tubular housing members.
