D. Z|ERER FRAME FOR COMBING MACHINES Filad May 12, 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 situated in a favourable position for being re- I great drawbacks for the following. reasons Patented May 20, 1924.
.- UNIT ED" STATES DANIEL ZIERER, 01F GUEBWILLER, FRAHCE, ASSIGNOR TO NOTjVEllLLiE CONSTRUCTION CI-DEVANT N- S HLUMBE-RGER &GI E., DIE GUEBWIII'LER, HAUT- RHINE, FRANCE. 1
rRAME FOR GOMBING MAcHmns.-
Application filed May 12,
and Republic France, have invented cern tam new and useful Improvements 1n Frames for CombingMachines, of which the follow- 7 ing is a full, clear, and, exact description.
. This invention relates to combing machines of the Heilmann type and other types based on the same principle according to which the lap whilst being held by a straight kind of combing devices such as amongst others the inlet, the
feed apparatus, and thenipper, are mounted on the upper portion of a frame, the
lower portion of which comprises, amongst otherparts, the camshaft, the circular comb,
the revolving brush and the doifer.
;.-It is likewise known that, as regardsthe circular comb which: is composed of one, two or more comb segments, the renewal of damaged rows of needlesis attended by When the comb segment or segments are moved from the top, the nipper is still closed and is thereforee at its minimum distance from the comb segment; this is an unfavourable position and hinders the removal of the comb segments from the top.
It is therefore necessary to remove the comb segments from the back by running the machine backwards after having first removed the screws that fix them on the comb stock discs or spiders, and also certain other parts which would prevent the removing operation. This removing operation is therefore a very delicate procedure necessitating skillful and experienced handiwork whilst at the same timeentailing great loss of time. These drawbacks are repeated when placing new segments into position, owing to the fact that it is desirable not I to damage the new rows of needles especially 1923; Serial 110,638,444. 7
placing the needle bars, especially those having closely spaced'needles it has already been proposed to make the segment'in two portions.. That expedient is however not perfect, because two comb segments fired one behind the other on, the comb stock, never revolve inthe sameperfectly circular inann er as a single segment, so that this constitutes afurther drawback in theworking ofthe combing machine.
ject to obviate the aforesaid drawbacks, and for th s purpose, it consists in improve merits in the frames of combing machines of the Heilmann type and machines'based on this type, whereby'thecomb segments are rendered more accessible/and can be removed from the top withoutidifficulty, with- .out requiring delicate handiwork, without throwing the machineout, of. adjustment and without loss of. the, replacing of the new comb segments into position being attendedby the salli advantages, in addition to-the important advantage of; being able to use over agam the; combsegmenjts 'madein Thepresent invention has now for its ob one piece whichhas. been hitherto impossible inqthefmajority of modern 1 combing machines I These improvements forming the subject matter of the present invention consist in principle in making the frame of the combing machines in two portions, namely a portion on which are mounted amongst other devices, the inlet, the feed apparatus and the nipper; this portionconstitutes the upper frame portion and is adapted to rock on a pivot pin fixed to the other portion, namely the lower frame portion which com prises amongst other devices a circular comb,
in such a manner as to enable the circular comb to be withdrawn, by moving back the devices carried by the upper frame portion, and thus allowing of removing and replacing the comb segments easily and rapidly and without throwing the machine out of adjustment.
In order to enable this invention to be more fully understood, a constructional form thereof is hereinafter described and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a Heilmann combing machinefthe frame being shown closed, and themachine being in working position, and
Figure 2 is a similar View showing the frame opened to allow of replacing the comb segments.
From these figures it will be perceived that the improved frame is composed of two portions 1 and 2, the upper frame portion 2 being adapted to be turned backwards by rocking on the pivot pin 3 fixed on the lower frame portion 1, the extent of this backward movement being such that it al lows the circular comb 4 to be completely disengaged from the nipper 5.
The upper portion 2 of the frame which latter is repeated correspondingly on the other side of the combing machine, oonstitutes with its two cross pieces 6 and 7, a rigid framework carrying, amongst other devices, the inlet, the feed apparatus and the nipper. A rigid fastenin together of the two parts 1 and 2 is assured by any suitable fastening device, such as for instance, bolts 8 and nuts 9, the undoing of which allows the upper frame portion 2 to be rocked until a heel piece or stop 10 comes against a shoulder 11 formed on or fixed to the lower frame portion 1.
In this position shown in Figure 2 the comb segments can be removed from the top and be replaced quickly and without difliculty, and without disturbing the adjustment of the machine, owing to the fact that the lower cross piece 7, which carries the nipper springs and the springs of the feed apparatus, rocks with the whole combination around the pivot pin 3.
hen this operation is completed, the movable frame portion 2 is brought back into its original position and fastened to the frame portion 1 by means of the bolts 8 I and nuts 9, or in any other manner,
It is to be understood that for the purpose of realizing the improvements forming the subject matter of the present invention and applying them to the various types of combing machine based on the Heilmann principle, the said improvements may undergo modifications, alterations in details,
and also that suitable mechanical equivalent may be used, without thereby departing from the nature of this invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a combing machine of the Heilmann type having an inlet, feed apparatus, a nipper and a circular comb formed in segments, a fixed frame on which the circular comb is journalled, a movable upper frame to carry the inlet, the feed apparatus and the nipper, and a pivotal connection between the fixed frame and the upper frame to enable the latter to be swung to "withdraw the, nipper from the comb to permit easy and rapid replacement of the comb segments without throwing the machine out of adjustment.
2. In a combing machine of the Heilmann type having: an inlet, feed apparatus, a nipper and acircular comb formed in segments,
a fixed frame on which the circular comb is j ournalled, a movable upper frame to carry the inlet, the feed apparatus and the nipper, a pivotal connection between the fixed frame and the upper frame to enable the latter to be swung to withdraw the nipper from the comb to permit easy and rapid replacement of the comb segments without throwing the machine out ofadjustment, and means for securing'the movable frame firmly to the fixed frame when the machine is to be operated.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my signature.
DANIEL ZIERER.
