Description

UNITE-n c STATES PATENT GEEIGE.
FRANCIS M. HUNT, OF OSSEO, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-CARRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,479, dated April '7, 1874; application iiled August 27, 187,3.
V To all whom 'it may concern:
construction and arrangement of an egg carrier, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. In order to enable others' skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make' and use the saine, I will now proceed t'ojdescribe its construction and operation, re-v ferring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view ofI my eggcarrier. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 a transverse Vertical section, ot' the same. y
The egg-carrier box is composed of the bottom A, upon which are erected four cornerposts, B B, and to these posts are fastened parallel slats C C. These slats run around the four sides, and are at such distances apart as to leave suitable spaces between .them for ventilation; The box thus constructedcoa tains a series of frames, D D, made in rectangular form, and of such size as to it between the front and back of the box, and be tween the corner-posts at the ends, so as to leave a space, a, at each' end of the box, between it and the ends of the frames. On top of each frame D is secured a sheet, b, of
pasteboard or other suitable material, by means of headed pins ac x. The heads of these pins project above the sheet b, and form posts,
upon which the frame above rests, thus forming air-spaces between the frames. By this construction of the box and frames a free circulation of air is obtained around the eggs throughout the whole box, and the box is at the same time very cheaply constructed. The tops b b of the frames have circular openings Letters Patent, is
or holes d d in them to hold the eggs. The holes in one frame do not correspond with those in the frame immediately above and below, so that when an egg is placed on end in one, its lower end rests on the top of the frame beneath it. The frames D D should be made of a height equal to about half the depth of an egg. The box A B C is provided with a 4hinged lid, G, on the underside of which is secured a frame, D', corresponding in size and position with the egg-frames D D. When the lid is closed down, the frame D presses down upon the knobs or headed pins x .r of the upper egg-frame D, and clamps or holds all of said egg-frames iirmly in their places in the box.
I am aware that an egg-carrier box com posed of a series of separated strips, and having a lid with a rectangular board on its inside, is not new.
By my construction of carrier-box and arrangement of frames therein, the air will pass between the slats of the box and between each frame, and when the lid is closed the rectangular frame on the inside thereof will bear on edges of the top egg-frame, and clamp the egg-frames within the box, so that they cannot jostle. The eggs of the top egg-frame will not be broken, as they pass between the bars of the frame on the lid.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by In combination with the egg-carrier box A B C, with lid Gr and interior frame D', the removable and separate frames D, with perforated sheets b and pins x placed one upon the other between the posts B, and leaving the spaces a at the ends', all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony thaty I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of August, 1873.
FRANCIS M. HUNT.
