Be it known that I, REUBEN D. ALE AN- nnn, a citizen of the United States,residing at Eureka Springs, in the county of Carroll and State of Arkansas, have invented cer,
tain new and useful Improvements in a Mechanical Hammer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanical hammers and more particularly to a motor actuated hammer in which the body of the hammer is formed by an internal combustion engine directly connected to the striking element, whereby the motion of the striking element is directly received from the actuation of the motor.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a hammer which will have an integral gasoline motor of the combustion type directly connected thereto whereby the actuation of the piston of the motorwill cause the hammer element to be reciprocated in a manner that will cause a forcible blow to be struck by the hammer when in use. i
A further object of this invention is the provision of a device of'this character.
which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this characterare ordinarily subjected.

Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like characters of reference indicate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, the crank case 1 is of substantially circular formation and has mounted thereon a cylinder 2, the crank case and cylinder forming the frame work for the motor. The motor also is constituted as a part of the hammer and is therefore readily portable. The fly wheel 3 is mounted within the crank case 1 and turns on the motor shaft 21 which is of the usual crank shaft formation. IThecrank shaft'22 is; connected, by means of a connecting rod 4 witha piston head 5 which is mounted in the cylinder 2. The wrist pin .10 in the cylinderwhich forms a'connection for the connecting rod with the piston also receives the yoke member 9 which has its lower end provided with the diverging arms the terminals of which are connected to a leaf spring 12. The leaf spring 12 is connected intermediate its ends with one end of the hammer 11 so that when the piston 5 is reciprocated the hammer will also be reciprocated. An adjustable support constituting rotatable collar 14 is provided to adjust the posi-.
tion of the drill 13 with respect to the hammer 11 which may be of any preferred type such asis used in various drilling operations. The drill is suitably connected to the collar 14 as by a key 23 and the collar is screw threadedly engaged with the rotatable sleeve 19 mounted as shown on an extension 19 of the crank case, and this sleeve is provided with an annular series of teeth 20 which are engaged by a pawl 18 carried by a vertical rod 17 which is journaled in a frame on one side of the crank case. The engine or crank shaft is provided with a gear on one end which is indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1 and this gear engages the gears on two cam shafts 8 which actuate the valve rods 7 whereby the intake and exhaust valves 6 will be properly actuated. One of the shafts 8, however, is provided with'a cam member which engages a projection or arm 16 on the rod 17 and this cam indicated at 15 is rotatable with the'shaft so that the rod 17 will be actuated at certain times whereby the dog 18 will turn the sleeve 19 by engaging the annularrack 22,
for rotating the drill 13 during its vertical movement. The arm 16 is held in engagement with the cam 15 by a coil spring 24.
The operation of the mechanism is readily understood from the above description and it will be noted that continued actuation of arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera', as may pro veex iedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V A mechanical hammer comprising a crank case, a cylinder extended from the eralnli case, a piston and connecting rod mounted in the cylinden'and connected to the crank shaft inth'e crank case, a hammer; a yoke connecting the said piston and provided with diverg ng arms, a leaf spring mounted on one end of the hammer and having its terminals fixed to the ends of the said diverging arms; a sleeve embracing the said hammer, a drill connected to the sleeve, and means for actnating the said sleeve whereby the drill may be rotated. during reciprocation.
