AGTUATINQMEANS non FUEL-INJECTOR PnUNe'iins.
"JoaZZ whom it may concern; Be it known-that I, RICHARD H. RANDALL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at I Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts,'have lnvented certain 7 new and useful Improvements in Actuating Means for F uel-Injector Plungers; and I do' hereby declare the fo-llowingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the nventlon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v a This invention relates to improvements 1n actuating means for the plunger of a valve .for' injecting fuel charges into the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, and its primary object is the provision of novel means of this type which shall be capable of adjustment to enable the size of the fuel. charges injected into the cylinder of the en- .gine to be varied-and controlled-at will.
j with my invention.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the constructlon, combination and arrangement of arts hereinafter fully described and cla1med, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:'
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a twocycle Diesel engine equipped w1tha valve actuating means constructed in accordance Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the valve.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the cam of the valve actuating means, and
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of, j the cam.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1 designates aninternal combus fuel inlet passage 27 connected with the passage 21 by a reduced branch passage 28 at a point adjacent to the reduced outlet 22. The

. e plunger of the injector valve is en- Specification of Letterslatent. Patent d S pt 1 gaged by the inner end of a rocker arm or lever 31 pivoted at an intermediate point at 32 and havingits inner end bearing again st the outer end of the plunger. The outer .por z tlon-of-the rocker arm,or.lever. is-provicled Y with a slot 33 and isadjustably connected with the upper endof a link rod 34 having a.. I
. pivot 35' operating in the slot andadapted to be secured at different points along V the rockerarm to varythe strokepf the same and, the consequent stroke of theplungen, By th s construction, the. amount of joil. or
other fuel injected into the cylinder may be:
varied and controlled by changingth'e. stroke of-the plunger through the adjustment of the link to the rocker arm.v
The link 34 is pivoted at 36toa reciproca-.
tory camv actuated: member v37, consisting of a rodoperating in'a guid'ei39 andhaving a rounded lower end 40 which is engaged by a cam 41. The cam 41, as clearlyillustrated in Fig. I4.of the drawings, consists ofia-ta pered or conical :sl eeve slidably interlocked with a longitudinal groove 0r cam portion 44' adapted to receive the end 40 of the res ciprocatory member for permitting the plunger to move outwardly to open the valve while withdrawing the plunger from the branch assage28. The camwhich is proso witha shaft 42lby a key.-4? ,and provi ,ded
vided with an annular groove 45 for the reception of the fork 46 of an operating actuating lever 47, is adapted by its longitudinal adjustment to vary the stroke of the plunger, and the concentric portion a of the tapered sleeve is adapted to maintain the plunger in its closed position. Instead of providing a tapered cam, a stepped construction of cam maybe used aswi'll be readily understood.
During a portionofeach revolution of the j cam the end40 of the reciprocatory rod or member 3'? will move into the, longitudinal groove 44 thereby causing spring of the plunger to actuate thelatter and open the injector valve,- and as the conical cam tapers in circumference, the longitudinal groove 44 will be correspondingly tapered and the degree of the opening and closing movements of the plunger will vary with the position of the cam.
The shaft 42 is driven from the crank shaft v 49 of the engine, and any suitable means,
not shown, may be employed for establishing plunger outwardly, a link rod, vmeans p-ivota driving connection between these shafts.
The inward movement of the reciprocatorymember 37 is limited by a nut 5a mounted on a threaded portion 55 of the reciprocatory member 37. The guide 39 is of tubular form, as shown, but the same may of coursebe varied in construction.
VWhat is claimedis:
1. Actuatingmeans for the plunger of a valve for injecting fuel charges into the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, comprising a rocker arm engaging the plunger and adapted to move the plunger inwardly, 1
a retraction Ispring adapted to move the ing the link rod to the rocker arm and adapted .to be adjusted lengthwise ofthe rocker arm in'the direction of andaway'fro-m its pivot, and means for imparting motion to the link rod.
2. Actuatingmeans for the plunger'of a' valve for injecting fuel charges' into the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, comprising a rocker arm adapted to move the plunger inwardly,a retraction spring adapted tomove the plunger outwardly, an
1 engine actuated reciprocatory member, a linkv 7 rod pivoted to the reciprocatory member, and
for the plunger of a tua'ted to move the plunger inwardly, a retraction spring adapted to move the plunger outwardly, a V reciprocatory member, a. link rod pivotally connected to the rocker arm and pivotally connected with the reciproca-' tory member, a driven shaft, and a conical sleeve mounted upon said shaft for adjustment with respect to said reciprocatory member, said sleeve being provided with a longitudinal groove having a bottom wall parallel with the axis of the shaft and adapted to receive the adjacent end ofsaid reciprocatory' during each rotation of the member once sleeve. V I 4:. 'Actuating valve for injecting fuel charges into the cylinder of aninternalcombustion engine, comprising a rocker armadap'ted to move the plunger inwardly, a retraction spring adapt; ed to moveithe plunger outwardly, a reciprocatory member, a link rod pivotally connected to the rocker arm adjustably and pivot ally connected with the reciprocatory member, a driven shaft; and a conical sleeve means for the plunger of a mounted upon said shaft for adjustment with respect to said reciprocatory member, said;
sleeve being provided-with a longitudinal groove havingabottom'wall parallel with the axis ofthe 'shaft and adapted to receive the'adj acent endof'said reciprocatory mem ber once during each rotation of-the sleeve. In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
