can s'rorrnn,
"Application filed iTlllle' a,
To all whom c'tmay concern 1 Be it known that I, JOHN;
of Alberta and Dominion of Ca11ada,;have invented certain newandusetul. Improve mentsnin Can Stoppers, otwhich the fol- *lOWlllg' 1s a SPQOlfiCfllllOXl. w:
This invention relates to'can stoppers and has for its objects to provideastoppers;especially adapted tel-be I used on cans provided with aspout, to provide'removable caps de- "signed-to normally close'the spout'and can opening;-to prov1de means to resiliently cone nect the two caps togetheiyto' provide means whereby 'the caps *on beingre'moved are enthe wa l-lot the spdutd' I Further objects are to providefistoppers for a can which 'arenot adapted to be -separated from the can butionlytidispla'ced in order to clear the opening that they normally close.
Still further objects are to provide an improved can stopper which is simple in construction, not liable to go out of repair, and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required of them.
Still further objects are to provide an improved can stopper such as described in the following specification illustrated in the accompanying drawings and set forth in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a top part of a can provided with the improved stopper.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the same, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional detail taken through the flanged opening of the can.
In the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures,
A represents a can of usual construction provided with a spout 10 and a flanged Fed on the flan e-of the can 'ope'ningot.
192a. Serial No. was;
. a the spout withthe top of the can- The CLmroRo ER, a subjectol the King of Great Britain, residing at Veteran, in the Province 1 1the.cap;15 is, provided with a gripping ring flanged opening 11 is provided with a cap 15 having its flangeein frictional engagevinent with the flange 11 of the opening and 16 having a stem 17 extending through the icapnand to which is connected a hook mem- :ber 18 which is best illustrated in Figure 8 ofthe drawings. The hook 18 is preferably formedof stout steel wire and is provided intermediate of its length with two offsets l9 and 20. designed to form a kink whichlengages the flange 11 of the opening ofnthe can1when the cap is displaced in order to clear the opening. A gasket or leak tight disc 21 isprovided in the cap 15 which when the cap is in normal position lies between. the cap and the top of the flange 11 in. order to forma leak proof joint. The 1 spout 10 isalso normally closed by a similar cap22 :which is also providedwith a ring 23 formed with a stem 24 extending through the cap and engaged by a hook 25 exactly similar to the hook 18 previously described. The cap 22 is also provided with a gasket or leak proof disc 26 which normally rests in the bottom of the cap engaging the edge of the spout 10. The hooks 18 and 25 are joined by a resilient element 27 which extends along the sheet metal strip 12, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
When the substance contained in the can equipped with this improved stopper is to be poured out, the ring 23 of the cap 22 is engaged by the fingers and the cap is pulled out until the kink in the hook 25 becomes adjacent the wall or" the spout 10 when the ring 23 is released in order to allow the hook to engage the wall of the spout which is retaining the cap in a displaced position 11st clear of the opening in the spout and this allows the liquid to be poured out from the can.
The cap 22 may be replaced by a similar disengaging hook 25 from the wall of the spout and allowing the spring 27 to retract the cap into position above the end of the spout 10 and the spring 27 will hold the cap 22 tight enough on the spout 10 in order to insure a leak proof joint.
If the can A is to be filled with oil or other. substance, thecap 15 is removed in a similar manner to the cap 22 by the ring 16 being engaged and pulled out until the ofiset hook 18 is brought in a position to be engaged by the flange 11 of the opening, in which position the cap 15 is located owing to the ulling action of the resilient member 27. he cap 15 is replaced on the flange 11 of the opening by disengaging the hook 18 from the flange and allowing the resilient element 27 to retract and pull the cap 15 back in engagement on to the flange 11 of the opening, thus providing a leak proof closure for the can opening.
The gaskets 21 and 26 of the caps may be formed of rubber or cork or, in fact, any suitable material which will be found to provide the better joint between the cap and the flanges of the opening.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A can stopper comprising in combination with a can having a flanged opening, and a spout, a removable cap for the spout, gripping means having stems extending through the respective caps, means engaging the stems whereby'the caps may be secured in open position, and a resilient element joining the said means.
2. A can stopper comprising in combination with a can having a flanged opening and a spout, a removable cap for the flanged opening of the can, a removable cap for the spout, gripping means having stems extending through the respective caps, a hook on each stem designed to engage the flange of the cap opening and the spout, whereby the caps may be secured in open position, and a resilient element joining the hooks.
3. A can stopper comprising in combination with a can having a flanged opening and a spout, a sheet metal strip extending within the spout and secured to the flanges of the openin and spout, a removable cap for the flange opening, a removable cap for the spout, a grip ring on each cap, hook members carried by the ca s and a resilient element eXtendin along the metallic strip and connecting tie two hooks.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN CLIFFORD TUCKER.
