Description

G. E. RUHMANN May 13 SMOKESTACK CAP Filed June i, 1925 INVENTOR Patented May 13, 1924.,
STATES GUSTAV E. BUHMANN, F SCHULENBURG, TEXAS.
SMOKESTACK CAP.
Application filed June 1, 1923. Serial No. 642,866.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV EDWARD RUHMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schulenburg, in the county of Fayette and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smokestack Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to smoke stacks and it contemplates the provision of a cap or hood that may be readily and easily attached to a stack and so constructed and arranged that the open end of the stack may be entirely closed during rainy or other inclement weather and as easily opened either fully or partially so as to permit a greater or less draft to the stack.
Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims wherein the same are read in connection with the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of stack and equipped with my novel hood and showing the open end of the stack entirely uncovered.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but taken at a difierent angle and showing the hood in its closed position; a portion of the elements of the hood being in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the stack and hood closed thereon.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a stack and showing the manner in which the hood is attached about the stack; the lid of the hood is not shown in this view.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
My novel construction is to be used on a new stack and in such case it is attached at the time of constructing the stack but I would distinctly have it understood that the cover is adapted for use on a stack already constructed. For the purpose of illustration 1 show the stack 1 that is open at its upper end and is provided with the collar 2 and adapted to be secured about the stack is my novel device comprising the semi-circular bands 3 having lugs 4 to receive bolts 5 whereby the bands are secured about the stack. Studs 6 are provided in the longitudinal center of each band 3 whereby a bailshaped member 7 is pivoted to the bands 3.
The ba'ilshaped member 7 is provided at its lower end with a ring 8 to which is secured a cable '9 for an important purpose hereinafter set forth. At its upper end the bail portion 7 is provided with an arm 12 that has an extension 13 to receive a ring 14k that in turn receives a cable 15 which is also provided for an importane feature hereinafter set forth. The arm 12 is riveted or otherwise secured to the cap or cover 16 and secured to the bail-shaped portion 7 and above the stud 6 is an arm 11 that is also riveted to the upper surface of the cover 16 while riveted to the bail-shaped portion 7 immediately below the stud 6 is another arm 10. This arm like the arm 11 is also riveted to the upper surface of the cover 16 and the arms 10 and 11 are duplicated at the same point on the opposite side of the bail portion 7.
It will be manifest by reference to Figure 4 that the bands 3 are secured about the stack and are retained in rigid relation by means of the bolt 5 that passes through the lugs 4. By this simple construction the entire draft regulating and stack covering device may be immediately positioned on the stack. By pulling on the cable 9 which extends to a convenient position either within or outside of a building the bail will swing on the pivot 6 and thus the cover may be moved to entirely cover the upper end of the stack. However, by allowing the cable 9 to pass through the hand and then pulling upon the cable 15 also conveniently located the cover may be entirely removed from the upper end of the stack to the position shown in Figure 1 or partially adjusted with respect tothe open end of the stack as draft conditions demand. The cable may be secured to any retaining element conveniently positioned and may be used to adjust the position of the cap after the well known manner of awning ropes.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that because of its extremely simple construction, my novel device is inexpensive to produce and at the same time may be easily placed or removed and the cap may be adjusted with but a slight amount of effort on the part of those practicing my invention.
The invention is of such a nature that it is particularly adapted for use in those parts of the country where a very little warning of rain or inclement Weather is given and Where it is necessary to be sure that the fires in a factory or the like Will not be extinguished by cloud-burst or high Winds.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an attachment for smoke stacks, the combination of two semi-circular bands having lugs arranged on the ends thereof, bolts that pass through the lugs for; securing the bands, about the stack, a bail-shaped member pivoted to the longitudinal center of the bands, arms permanently secured to the member and extending therefrom, a hood secured to one end of the member-anda1so to the arms, a ring secured to member and hood and a cable secured to the ring.
2. In draft regulating means, the combination of semi-circular bands, secured at their ends to each other, a bail-shaped member pivotally secured to bands, arms secured to the member, a hood secured to the member and arms, a ring secured to one edge of the hood and aacable secured to the ring.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit- GUS. E. RUHMANN. Witnesses E. R. .Voer, OTTO Voe'r.
